What's a piece of kit you like to always take /out/ with you that might not be on everyone's list?

Pic related: External phone battery that can charge my phone up 8 times. Being able to find signal and make a phone call has saved me before. Now I make sure I've got one of these in my car and one in my pack. £20 on Amazon.

You don't have to post proof but at least tell the story.

It's embarrassing but fine. 1/2

We were doing Crib Goch, a less busy more challenging route up Snowdon. It's a scramble which requires a very small, easy climb up to the peak of Crib Goch which is connected to Snowdon via an arête. The arête is very exposed and does require pretty a pretty solid head for heights.

I went with a few friends who weren't up to it. I pushed them too hard. The visibility was very poor. We somehow managed to descend the wrong ridge after the first summit (we descended along the north ridge of crib goch, if you're familiar with it. you're supposed to walk west).

Because of the poor visibility and my arrogance ("It's a ridge - it's not like we can get lost" - wrong motherfucker). We didn't realise we'd gone the wrong way until we had descended some relatively steep rocky scrambling, and a VERY steep scree slope. At least a couple of hours off course.

After realising we had fucked up, my friends wanted to make a beeline for the road to Llanberis, which I knew was stupid. By this point I had checked our position on the GPS (google maps with offline data - phone help point #1) and could see some serious terrain between us and the road. Looks like sheer cliffs.

They’re like “fuck it, we’re not going to fall off a cliff. Let’s just go for it.

I’m like “It’s not that bad, it’s not that hard. We’re going back the way we came”.

Because I’m the only experienced, competent walker they listened to me, and we started to make our way back up. By this point it’s getting late-ish (about 6pm in September) - another stupid mistake we made).

2/2
Then things got totally fucked up. One of my friends completely froze. We had already been through points where I had needed to guide their hands and feet individually to the right hand and footholds, but at this point the mist had started to settle on the rocks making them slick and my pal had enough. He went into full panic mode. He was repeating over and over that he was going to die. He shouted at me and was on the verge of tears. I knew we had harder stuff ahead and there was no way we could go any further. Down it is, then.

Knowing that there is no marked path, it’s getting dark, and there’s some serious terrain ahead, I phoned mountain rescue. I tried to get them to advise me of a route from our position (thanks to phone I was able to give them our precise coordinates). However, knowing the terrain we were in so well, they refused to give us directions and immediately sent a team out to find us and lead us down.

I know that this situation is entirely my fault, and the mistakes I made are very fucking clear in hindsight. Pushing people out of their comfort zone (especially in bad weather), and leaving late fucked us.
This walk really isn’t that hard. There is an abundance of really nice stuff to walk on and grab onto. It’s easy - It’s just the height and exposure that fucks people. I’ve been doing this sort of hiking since I was tiny, so the idea that anyone could find it this hard is alien to me. It was very frustrating when he lost his shit.
I went back 2 weeks later with a more experienced friend. We stayed the night in the Pen Y Pass hostel, did the walk and drove home.

Obviously the phone didn’t prevent us from getting into trouble in the first place, which is ideal. But it’s nice to have a contingency for problems I’m enough of an idiot to get into.

I can’t be bothered to take a photo of the charges but it says RP-PB26 on the back. It’s a bit broken so I’ve just ordered 2 of the ones in the OP image.

Nice job OP.

I carry burlap sacks with me. Usually potato bags from when I buy them at the grocery store. I can gather firewood with them, stuff them for a pillow, carry game or fish kill, lay on a wet log to sit on, and many other things. They are more durable than bring a trash bag. Another thing I bring that I don't see many others with is a bottle of vanilla in their first aid kit. It can be used to treat burns and cuts. It can be used as a cough syrup, and it can be used for toothaches.

This little fucker. Pocket bellows, i.e. collapsible tube for making awesome fires, e.g. getting the temperature high in my caldera cone. Weighs a measly 22g, makes fire management easy.

Nifty.

Very nice story. I also hate it when weaklings panic.

Personally, I unsheathe my katana, teleport behind them, and force them along by the tip of my blade when that occurs.

You probably aren't as tough as me to do something like that but heh whatever kiddo, nothing personnel

Highly recommended

Oh no -- so worth it.

As an alternative: Buy a 500mm 8/10 carbon fibre tube on ebay, will weigh about the same, and only set you back a couple of ameribucks, free shipping and all. Of course, then it wont be collapsible -- but if you enjoy smoking, you can turn it into a pipe!
>>
>>712134

Kek

Actually I must say I've watched a couple of videos and they do seem to work really well. It seems like a bit of a stupid idea but when you think about it it's better than getting ash and smoke in your face, plus it weighs almost nothing.

Also this: A small 19 gram 4xAAA charger, i.e. insert four triple a batteries, charge Smartphone/inReach. Not super effective, but enough to give me 30-40% extra battery on phone before the voltage drops. If Energizer Lithium, much more.

Point is, I already have 4 AAA eneloops og 4 Energizer Ultimate Lithium with me as spares for a 3xAAA headlamp and 1xAAA for a Fenix LD02 tent/backup torch. On short trips, I can even "borrow" the batteries from the lamps themselves in a pinch, and thus not carry spares either.

As such, I dont need to bring an extra battery pack. Only the tiny 19g "converter" pictured.

I'm smarter than OP. Congratulate me, internet.
>>
>>712134
Used one for about a year, they do help (weirdly) in not only keeping your face away from all the smoke and heat but in also making you able to blow out air for longer since it restricts how much you can push out. You end up with a nice long stream of air that can be directed just where you need it. Just shake it out when you are do as you can get a bunch of spit condensation in there.
>>
>>711329
this one isn't going to charge your phone 8 times. my old ass 2013 phone has a 2100mah battery, newer phones have capacities in the mid 3000s.
>>
>>716129
Yeah, this.
Ifbit charges your phone 8 times, it's going to be fucking heavy or its bullshit.
About 1/3 of these chargers are full of sand just to make them weigh more and semi like they're decent quality.
Go with something from xaomi or somewhere using Samsung/LG batteries. Or just carry a $20 burner dumbphone that weighs 1/5th of this battery.

Blue hospital rags or the white lap sponges. Blue rags are my favorite mostly because we crippin but also they are a lil larger, fit in the back pocket perfect, works as a sweat rag, wiping your hands off, anything. Rinse em off with sone relatively clean water and wring em out and they are good as new.

Plus they are free so they are basically disposable. If it's gettin too dirty or I need to wipe my ass with it, I can just toss it in the river never to be seen again and grab a fresh one.

Hell yeah huck towels are awesome. Super absorbent, no fuzz/fluff and cheap to buy.

I just found this thing online, looks awesome. What do you think, /out/?

I seem to be the only one who Tahoe spare boot laces with me.
I have met people on the trail who have boots held together by duct tape because they broke a lace.

Chalk. Quick marking of a trail that will be gone in a month. I hate seeing blaze marks on trees and fluro spray paint.
>>
>>717466
You say that as if some people don't. Do you need a refresher course in the benefits of river shitting?
>>
>>720768
I hear its a god idea to Replace your laces with paracord. True?
>>
>>720824

True. They don't stretch or break, they hold knots well but are still easy to undo. And I suppose if you want to be a paranoidfag about it then yeah I suppose you could use them for "survival" reasons in a "tactical survival SHTF MGTOW KFC FBI" situation.

But still, would recommend.
