Let's talk winter sports. Went skiing for the first time today, never seen such a collection of rich white people. Literally didn't see one black person. I've heard snowboarding is very difficult compared to skiing, is that true? Does longboarding skills transfer by chance:

Skiing is easier to get into but harder to improve on. Once you get past the pizza/french fry stage its hard to transition into full on carving without a ton of practice. Skis are also more versatile than snowboards (Never have to unstrap to move on flat surfaces, easier to carry/tow things, can go across moguls easier)

Snowboarding is harder to get into, but easier to improve your skills on once you have the basics down. The big barrier is getting your toe edge, but once you get past that carving becomes natural and your skills improve pretty sharply.

Outdoor adventure sports don't have a ton of black people in the first place and snowsports in particular because who wants to pay a grand for a ski pass?
>>
>>703784

I dont see blacks anywhere when outdoors doing anything.

Blacks and outdoors dont match, save for military blacks, which are basically forced to.

Also the skiing is for rich whites is now a meme and defunct. it happened just like with aviation.

Back then both skiing and being a pilot where exclusive and carried a certain status. With both activities being more accessible now almost everyone does it. It has lost all exclusivity.

Snowboarding is more difficult to start but less difficult to master, and that's mainly because having both feet tied to the same object is a fucking chore.

Skii is and forever will be master race
>>
So what the fuck is the deal with little kids shredding up the slopes? I got rekt so hard by this little 6 year old pros. Is it just rich parents going to the slopes every winter and getting their kids lessons?
>>
> longboarding skills
> such a poor fag

I will kill you if you even TRY to date my daughter!
>>
>>703817
Basically, yeah.

I work at a ski resort in the winter and there are parents that start their kids skiing almost as soon as they can walk.

I consider myself a fairly good skier, but I started late. It can be pretty demoralizing when you think you've finally got the hang of that tricky double black run and you get absolutely schooled by an 8 year old girl.
>>
I don't know about snowboarding, but skiing can be a pretty serious gear spiral. I don't any serious skier, even the broke ski bums, that only has one pair of skis.

Carving skis, powder skis, big mountain skis, touring skis....
>>
>>703850
> not wanting to slick back her hair inna shower so she looks six
>>
>>703856
>skiing can be a pretty serious gear spiral

;_;

got some arcteryx lithic gloves hopefully arriving in the mail today

but yeah it's not just white people, it's always been popular with japanese (I really really want to do a trip there one season to ski niseko) and growing popularity with other east asians as their countries become more affluent

it is a pretty expensive sport, but honestly it can be done on a reasonable budget. buy a season pass to one decent resort within easy driving distance and a pair of all mountain twin tips. beginner intermediate skis especially tend to be pretty affordable. other gear can be as expensive or cheap as you want. you don't actually *need* primaloft and other expensive techs
>>
>>704459
The second hand gear market is also HUGE. I got a pair of Fischer Big Stix 106 for $175, all they needed was a wax and a tune.

Also, working at s ski resort either full or part-time will net you a free season pass.

Since a lot of resorts are opening up in the summer as mountain bike parks, you can work casual part time over the summer and pay for your season pass for the upcoming winter.
>>
>>703817
>>703850
While some of them do have a lot of natural talent even at a young age, what really helps skiers progress is
>1 on 1 coaching
>video replay
>airbag / foampit / trampoline setups for freestyle skiing
>camps like woodward where sponsored pros ski with you

Usually those are out of financial reach for normies.

Working lift ops / grooming / instructing is a good way to get mountain access for free, as long as you can hang with seasonal work.
>>
>>703784
Blacks evolved in the sahara, they don't like winter in general

Is there some reason why you must have a token black around you at all times?
>>
>>703817

Kids have a lower center of gravity, have more stamina, are fearless, and have loads of soft cartilage for absorbing impact.

Skiiing as a 6 year old is a whole different game than skiiing as an adult.
>>
>>705418
I'm blown away when I watch my 6 year old lad on the play equipment at school. They do calisthenics like it's nothing just for fun, and recover from serious tumbles with nothing but a hug and a pat on the back (and occasionally a bandaid). Oh, and they're fearless when it comes to speed or height.
>>
After reading this thread I'm having second thoughts about booking some nights at snowbombing this year.
>>
>>705444

I teach blind people to ski and go with them.

I do this because I get to ski for free and I have the right to skip the all the lines

If I didnt have these advantages I wouldnt ski on my own, because waiting on line half an hour for a 10 min descent is utter shit.

All ski resorts are clogged up as fuck everywhere.
>>
>>705545
>waiting on line half an hour for a 10 min descent
Weekday skiing. I went once on a school vacation, never again.
Mid-week has the advantage of more discounts/2-for-ones.
>>
>>705545
Saw a blind skier + guide at the local mountain on Sunday, you're (selfishly) doing the lord's work anon.

>>705549
>mfw trying to ski in the terrain park on a weekend
It's a goddamn shitfest, you need to take turns spotting the landings for your friends or else you'll land on some weekender who double ejected and lays in the landing moaning for 5 minutes
>>
>>705560

Thanks senpai.

Blind people are actually better beginners than normies if they trust you, because they dont see shit and thus dont feel fear.

I like to help out and shit and I have fun, but I admit I also do it for the benefits of free skiing + not waiting lines.
>>
>>705563
I know where you're coming from, I'm an instructor who usually teaches beginners and the fear barrier is real.

Which areas do you ski? I'm in MA so we only have small mountains with fairly short lines, but it's still nice skipping them
>>
>>705567

Spain, famalam

Sierra Nevada is GOAT for beginners. Ther rest are all inferior tho the Alps and the french pyrenees.

It's clogged as shit to the point I have completely given up on skiing on my own or with friends.

Mad jelly, the mountains in my area are genuinely tiny and you need to drive 3 hours north or fly somewhere for big ones

Pic related is the area I instruct at, it's a very beginner mountain, only several hundred vertical feet. The alps are my dream goal right now
>>
>>705605
I've had some of the best times on Nashoba (244 vert ft)
Sunday River is the best in the east.
Cannon 2nd
Wildcat & Killington tied
Okema can't be too far from you. Not bad. I prefer NH to VT though.

>1 on 1 coaching
>video replay
>airbag / foampit / trampoline setups for freestyle skiing
>camps like woodward where sponsored pros ski with you

That's a lot of meme shit. The most important thing is to just spend time on the slopes. Little kids especially have an advantage to learn fast because of their low center of gravity and ability to bounce back quickly from a fall. Intensive training is only worthwhile if your competitive.

Post trail maps of the mountains you've been too.

This one has some serious fun trails and you can spend a bunch of time coming down on one run.
>>
>>705671
Don't get me wrong I love the area, it's well preserved from the 60's with lots of vintage decoration and cheap prices.

Since I'm in the southwest corner of MA I usually just do Mt. Snow or Stratton.
Only been to Okemo once when I was younger, but really liked it.

>>705685
I won't argue that time spent is a major factor. Consider though, two identical kids: One spends a day on a trampoline with a coach learning corks, the other just wings cork 5's off a jump while their dad yells "go gettem tiger!"
First kid will be able to land a cork 5 after a few tries and graceful falls, and the other will probably be in the hospital
>>
>>705696
For taking jumps I suppose. I never really considered that skiing though, more of an x-games type sport.

and the other side of the mountain. I prefer turoa though, even if it is a bit smaller. the snow tends to be less assblasted by the wind, and I think it gets a few less people. you don't get any of that 30min lift line shit in this country though
>>
>>705724
well, you are on skis when you do it... but I understand, and you're right.

I gotta admit as a britfag I'm incredibly jealous of the fact you north americans have decent local mountains, in your own country, accessible and plentiful.

However, I fucking love the alps. The sheer size of the resorts there is incredible. I've ben to whistler when I was a kid a bunch of times and it seemed huge, but looking at it now even that seems tiny compared to the two french resorts i last went to.

Boarding is quite a lot harder to learn than skiing, and skiis are a lot more manouverable & versatile.

Also I find that inexperienced boarders have a much higher chance of injuring themselves with stuff like that broken wrists and dislocated shoulders

Living in summit for 5 years has got me jaded to resorts and the people here. Spring break has started and gapers are everywhere.

Moved into riding backcountry. Me and a million other fuckers who dint belong there. Expect avalanche fatalities to raise dramatically in upcoming years.
>>
Living and working at Alta this winter. I love it, small area but the upper mountain is a blast.

Gaper/Beater/Jerry crowd is pretty small compared to other areas (the worst ones go to Snowbird) It gets kinda bad around Christmas/New Years (beater week) and if there's powder on the weekends, but nowhere near as bad as Park City OR Deer Valley. The midweek skiing is great and it's awesome when the canyon closes and the valley crowd can't crash the party.
>>

It's so small there's a t-bar tow to the top... but yes I've had a lot of good times there.
That looks comfy as fuck, I really need to plan a Europe ski vacation

>>705970
Telluride is my all time favorite so far, really nice people there. There's a communal take something / leave something in town for ski gear

>>706171
Luckily at my area most of the gapers take the summit lift, the terrain park / race course lift is uncomfortable kek

To expand on the thread, I've been boarding since I was 7, go about once a year because my dad saves up during the year and loves to go. I ski and snowboard, mostly ski. I can snowboard ok (linked carving turns) but I can't go fast.
Would I be correct in saying people find snowboarding harder because you're leaning forward and back over (essentially) one point of balance, versus side to side on two points (skiing)?

I feel like skiing is more natural to people who haven't ever done board sports before. I skiid from when I was 5-6 then I wanted to switch. Honestly snow boarding is super natural to me because all you have to do is just lean side to side. Picking it up is harder for those who have already skiid but if you haven't it's not as bad. Once you get down toe turns like someone already said it becomes so much easier.
I've been doing the powder in the trees for the last few days and I can say that trees are easier on a board because of the way you move.

"sure", less than an hour later i had broken my wrist. (on my first day of the holiday, alone in the city.. I only have myself to blame, seriously, take care.)

yeah snowboarding is harder than skiing at first, although skiing gets harder later on. I definitely recommend using wristguards when you start snowboarding - wrist fractures are insanely common in snowboarders

I dunno, never tried doing it as a job. It takes lot of eye for detail, precision and you've got to be willing to work long hours

Operating a chair lift is most likely a much, much comfier job
>>
>>708177
Well, you say that... but at the local mountains there aren't any high-speed detachable chairlifts.
They run the standard kind pretty fast and every 10 minutes on a busy day some kid falls off trying to get on the lift
>>
>>708225
>>708177

It's the same here, but with more of an issue with people getting off our steep exit ramps. I heard some woman broke a couple ribs on one. I've had so many small kids fall off and under the chair while loading though it's insane. Thankfully they all wear helmets since you can hear the bottom bar smack their heads pretty loud.

Also, while watching kids after loading them and making sure they don't slide off or get their ski tips stuck (you can tell people all day to keep their shit straight and tips up, but no one actually listens) the people in line behind the next group of people I was loading came too far forward and just got taken out by the chair as it came around the bullwheel, it threw them several feet off to the side. They were fine though and I've never seen anyone actually get injured on a lift myself though, people are pretty durable.

I was super nervous to even run a rope tow when I started out, but by the end of the season I was numb to it all. Most people get injured on the slopes themselves, so I just feel really bad when when a parent tells me it's their kids first time on a hill and I smile and tell them "It's a pretty mellow slope, easier then the main one, lot's of learners out here, you should do fine, here's your chair. Have a nice run!" Only to see the kid being toted down by ski patrol on a backboard ten minutes later.

Still the comfiest job I've ever had, I've seen some amazing sunsets while just chilling atop a hill outside my shack while the place is dead. My favorite times were when the place was loaded and crazy at night though, loading drunk/stoned people onto chairs can be hilarious. There is just this energy everywhere, and everyone feeds off it. Probably the happiest I've been in my little depressed life, 10/10 job, would apply again. Dat shit pay and back ache from shoveling snow though.

Hehe, most of my lift-days are with one of those, a rickety old two seater, and that one is manageable compared to the four seater we have. That one goes even a bit faster and gets way more people... a lot of the guests look actually goddamned angered when the back of their knees clap together, like I could have prevented it

>>708303
We are very particular with maintaing and making sure the off-ramps and on-ramps are in proper shape at all times to prevent stuff like that

Currently on my seventh season here, but I've so far only worked part time (every other weekend, holidays and whenever I've gotten an offer) due to being a full-time student aswell. I'll be done with that bullshit in two months, and next season I'll probably work my first season full time and quite possibly full time as a ski patrol instead of working both ski lifts and ski patrol... lifts are alright, but I want to do "more" and be a bit more active throughout the day

Our ramps kept melting faster then we could shovel snow on them with all the warm weather this year, then shit would refreeze at night and be solid ice in the morning.

I'm going to try to get into instructing next year, and probably run lifts too since the turnover is really bad and you can have all the hours you want by the end of the season while the instructors just have to sit around not getting paid if they can't book a lesson.

Ski patrol looks fun as hell, but it's all volunteer work here. Might sink some money in later in life to get certified just so I can ski for free.

I just booked 5 nights lodging at a fancy hotel (heated outdoor pools, saunas, indoor ice rink with complimentary ice skate rentals, etc.) with 4 days of lift tickets here >>708720 for $477 total, just gotta factor in gas (I'm 13 hours away) and I'll bring some groceries, maybe a crock pot and a small alcohol stove to cook so I don't have to waste money dining.

It's really a matter of when you book during the season and week, combined with if the resort offers discounted lodging packages. It's like 3x more expensive at least to go anywhere big out west and even stay at a crappy motel.

Do you think the hotel will get pissy if I leave a crock pot running in my room while I ski? Any good food ideas for this type of trip? They also have gas grills available at the hotel and there's no night skiing so I should have plenty of time to cook whatever for dinner.

>>
>>713061
The great thing about American skiing is there's just so many mountains to pick from. The largest ones out west are around 4000 vertical feet tall, with up to 6000 skiable acres. Yeah I'd love to ski in the Alps, but I'm fine with the Rockies for now.

If you want backcountry hiking / adventure that's available. If you want a resort so small it's figuratively impossible to lose track of your children at, we have those too.

As a nationally certificated ski and snowboard instructor I can't agree with you completely. I agree that skiing is easier to get into. Natural stance and and freedom of movement make huge difference starting. Making skiing easier to get into. That is why I teach children under 6 how to ski before we move to snowboarding often.

Where I disagree is about improving your skill. Both skiing and snowboarding take real commitments to improve your skill level. One is not easier then the other to accomplish. Hell.. if I wanted to make that argument it would be much easier to side with snowboarding being harder to improve skills level IMO.

Saying all you need is your toe edge is makes me cringe. That is old school mentality and bad advice. The complexity of dynamic turning ability on different snow conditions alone is more varying for a snowboarder. If your not using your toe edge day 1 your not snowboarding. Your literally talking about turning left and right.. If you can't do both of those your not snowboarding.

Skiing has skill ceiling just as high as snowboarding. Skis them self are more suitable for many situations. Touring, back country, and many in bound conditions make skis versatile in way snowboards can't be. Now a days you can buy a split board and tour along with your ski buddy into back country or up that hill on the resort to get the fresh runs. No need to boot pack. When it comes to personnel and emergency purpose's snowboards can't compare. We needs those skinny snowboards. They have so much mobility on varying conditions and many other advantages for those purposes. They are essential.

Don't mix that up though. Snowboard have limits in those situations for sure. They also give you ride down the mountain that is unique and different that anything skis can offer. As it goes for skis. Unique and challenging.

People forget how dangerous snow sports are. At least underestimate it. Be careful everyone!

I have tried snowboarding twice and its difficult.
never tried ski and has rollerblading background more than a decade ago.

Been to
- arkopia Takayama
- Shiga Kogen, Nagano

This weekend will be heading Asarigawa, Otaru, then Zao,Yamagata.

I need help on the jacket (i have snow pants, borrow from friend). Is this combi good enough for snowboarding?
I need to reduce weight much possible in my backpack for in-flight handcarry.
>>
>>717206
Yeah you'll probably be fine with that combo.

It's all about layers - have a nice thermal underlayer on, then some kind of mid layer, then your pic related, and then pack an extra warm layer in your bag in case shit gets nasty up on the hill. You'll do good dude.
>>
>>717219
thanks anon.

the blue columbia jacket is just a waterproof windbreaker(very thin, weight close to nothing).
Reason im thinking going with this combo is that when i go down Tokyo in April, I can just wear the windbreaker (or that black insulated jacket at night), as a snowboard jacket might be a lil too flashy for casual wear(and its extra weight).

am checking few youtubes on toe turns as i suck at it.
Looking forward for the snows in few days time

No worries.

I'm pretty jealous you get to board in japan btw. Your snow is world renowned.

Regarding early snowboarding tips: best I gave the GF while learning (according to her anyways) was to pick an edge and commit to it, and to do those early turns from the top down - ie your upper body swings round and the rest just follows. I personally found that my weight always went much farther forward than I thought, and at low speeds pivoting on the front foot helped a lot.

After that early stage is done, all you gotta do is pretend you can snowboard like a boss, and before you know it, you can.

Good luck anon.

Is skiing mostly an old people sport? It seems like 90% of people I've talked to in the lifts are over 50, and the lodges are filled with middle aged white people.
>>
>>719196
I'm sure it can depend on which country and culture you live in, but it's an activity for all ages where I live.
>>
>>719196
In my experience there are a lot of old people, but there are even more entitled bro-douches who think they own the mountain and if you're in the back-country on anything except skis that you're trespassing.

Fuck those people. I don't snowshoe through skintracks, but I kind of want to when I meet those shitfucks.
>>
>>719196
Older people have more disposable income and vacation time.
>>
>>719196
Not really, at my mountain there's always hordes of school programs. Most people start skiing when they're young, often as young as 2-4 years old.
Most of the staff at a ski mountain will be 15-45 years old, it doesn't pay super well but this is how we ski for free.
When you're in your twenties it can be harder to get out to the mountain if you're in college / another job is all, those old people you see have been skiing their whole lives usually
>>
At my mountain it sort of depends on when you ski.

If go out mid-week, most everybody is going to be under 25 or over 50, the exceptions mostly being resort employees.

The weekends are when everybody else comes out.

>Layers. Always layers.
I almost always prefer layers because it gives me options... not just day-by-day, but even hour-by-hour. Today, sun was in and out of the clouds, and there was probably a 20°F temp swing between the two. Having a layer I can peel off when it gets warm is real nice. If it's nice in the morning but we stay out later than planned, I have an additional layer I can throw on.

None of my gear is insulated. Most days (10-30°F) i'm in jersey/armor-vest/jacket and i'm comfortable. Pants, same deal, armored shorts/knee guards and a waterproof/windproof shell over that.
When the temp dips below zero I might add a thermal top under my jersey. Or i'll just cinch down my vest a little tighter to keep a little more heat in.

>>
>>724383
Snowsports possess a higher risk of injury. There are things that can mitigate it, like helmets and crash vests, but it will always be there.

I lost about a month of ski time to a knee injury this season. And if it weren't for my helmet I would have lost even more to a serious head injury.

I've collected 2 concussions and pushed a disc out of place skiing, surprised I haven't broken anything yet.

I highly recommend using wrist guards like they have for roller-skating, they save your shit if you fall with force onto your hands
>>
>>724593
Quite a lot of my seasonal bum compatriots have torn meniscuses, acl/lcl, floating patellas, bulging disks and enough head injuries to cause some truly interesting behavioral outbursts.

There's enough compression devices, braces, wraps, athletic tape, ice packs and painkillers in our dorm to stock an NFL locker room for a season.

Didn't know Australia had any good skiing in March.

fucking truth

I always get a kick out of the noobs I ride with when they comment on all the gear I wear. "What do you need all that for?", they ask ... then a few hours later they wad it up and start to think knee braces and the shoulder pads on my vest are a good idea.

Also,
>finally home after a week of riding/racing
>unpack the gear bag
>an hour later the entire house reeks of death

Do you ski Snowbird at all? Alta is great but I prefer Snowbird just because most of the best lines are at Snowbird.

Sometimes, but I work at Alta so I mostly ski at Alta. Next season I might upgrade to the double pass but I didn't have enough coin at the start of this season.

Saw a lot of those over the holiday weekend. Also the conditions board at the bottom of one of the lifts just said "Welcome Jerry!"
>>
>>725607
I did the combined pass my first winter in Utah but I skied at Snowbird most of the time because all my favorite chutes and cliffs are there so I decided it's not really worth doing the combined pass anymore.

I always find the vibe between Snowbird and Alta interesting. The Bird is such a slick, modern ski resort and Alta such an old school, wild west ski town.

Yet it works having them right next to each other.

If you're talking about Snozone Milton Keynes the teaching there is great, You'll be tired by the end of that, and you'd have learned lots.

Going skiing for the first time next week.
I'll be staying about 300m from the ski lifts but I don't want to walk to them in my boots.

So I have some snow boots, that I keep in this backpack. Any thoughts about how to carry my ski boots whilst wearing the snow boots?

How does this look?

they handle just like a regular ski boot, and can be set to 95, 105 or 115 flex with rubber bushings
>>
>>726312
if there's snow on the ground, just ski the 300m. otherwise I would walk it in the ski boots. Carrying regular boots around for a whole day just for a 300m walk is ridiculous imo
>>
>>726455
i agree. just walk it in ski boots. you'll get used to it in no time.

that said, now that i snowboard, i praise the gods every time i have to walk anywhere in those dam comfy boots.

Went on a 10 day trip to Wyoming and Montana this year. Didn't get a lot of fresh snow but had a few days at grand targhee after a 6-8inch storm that were great.

That one's landing actually feels a lot flatter than it looks in the pic/video. Still a really fun one though.

All these are off my Nikon, snowmobile race.
>tfw media pass gets me on the race track... next best thing to actually racing (which may happen next year.)

I have a Contour Roam on my helmet. Works well for what it is, but I won't say it's a great camera. Usually configure it for 1 photo/sec; easier to go through, and the battery lasts longer that way. Takes better photos than it does video IMO.
I've tried shooting video before, just takes too much effort on my end, and that shit can eat up hard drives like a motherfucker.
I basically break-even with my photos (hosting, equipment), and I do it as a hobby and not a profession, so my motivation to actually go out and shoot video is somewhere near zero.

As cheap as they are there's really no reason not to have one or two though. They are fun.

Find a small local mountain, it is often that the skiing is better when there are fewer people on the mountain, the conditions may be better with fewer people on the hill that has better snow but a trillion people.

Snowboarding is sooo much easier to learn compared to skiing its not even funny. Learned how to carve on my first 6 hour day. Ive done a lot of surfing and longboarding prior though.

The 6 year old pros often live near a mountain or train often. If you ever go to a childrens ski training in a rural mountain area youll get shit on so hard its not even funny. They are way beyond people who go skiing twice a year. We will never reach that level.

I like skiing, both cross country and downhill. I usually go cross country skiing once or twice a week in the wintern. I used to downhill ski frequently, but I haven't really done much of it for the past two winterns. I skiid 4 days in pic related this wintern, cross country on 2 days and downhill on the other 2. My favourite slopes there are the northeast ones. Some of the pictures posted ITT make me wish I could visit a proper mountain some day and go skiing there.
