I prefer hot meals. After a long day of hiking nothing like a good hot dinner. I usualy have a hot breakfast too (oatmeal and coffee). Lunch is the only meal I eat cold. Its usually something I can eat on the move like a tortillia wrap, trail mix, or a cliff bar.
MREs are shit for long distance hiking, too heavy. If you are not worried about weight (car camping/canoe camping) you can just pack real food.
Most complex food would be the breakfasts we make while canoeing. Usually have bacon or sausage, flapjacks, scrambled eggs, home fries and coffee.
Truth be told when I go on canoe trips its usually with 5 other people so we have 3 canoes we cram with food and gear. Most cooking is done on a coleman stove.
>>
I'd like to be the first to say that actual mres are over priced crap ave pretty bad for you to boot. The ones I usually get are like, greasy entree + pb&j + candy + coffee + dessert, stupid food imo.
>>
Warm breakfast
Cold lunch/snacks
Hot dinner.
>>
My friend said the only MRE she enjoyed during her time serving at M*A*S*H units were the pasta-based ones. There was a beef dish she remembered liking but it was only because of the sides and the beef itself was horrid.

I watched a thing on how MREs are made one time. It was sort of fascinating and disgusting to watch them make 500lbs of buttered noodles.

Not exactly complex but we've been making campfire pizza with this lil' oven made from pie tins and binder clips. The oven is very lightweight and also works great for biscuits & sweet rolls.

Usually:

Make a curry at home and package in sealed baggie. Have that with fresh made rice.

Bacon is also a good one

For quick meals I like soups and noodles

For breakfast I like fruit and porridge and coffee

For snacks I like trail mix and biscuits.

Sometimes I'll make bannock on the fire.

I use Joylent. It's the perfect /out/ meal for me, you just need water and it has everything the body needs. There is also no need to carry any tools to prepare it or anything.

This. Stove gets set up with my tent, goes to sleep someplace bearproof and gets put away when I break camp in the morning.

MREs are pretty shit. I look for just-add-water meals or sometimes just skip some butter/milk/cream.

I've chopped up and fried some veggies to go with some rice and dried curry sauce before.

>Do you favour warm or cold meals?
Depends on the season. I usually do cereals and cold hardboiled eggs for breakfast, but if it's winter I stick with oatmeal and tea. Dinners are hot. Lunches are cold meats and breads.
>Most unhealthiest outdoor food?
Anything with a lot of sodium or shit in it.
>What do you think of emergency food?
Never had em.
>Did you ever try MREs?
Nah. I probably will in the future though.
>What was the most complex food you've ever cooked while you were in the woods?
I've made plenty of stews. Pic related. Made a huge beef stew with potatoes and carrots last summer when me and my bud went camping in the Adirondacks.

Chili mac is greezy as fuck. most MREs are like can food quality with food that is very comfy and good for a combat environment. They are a real morale booster when its been a long day but suck after eatting them for every meal for 6 months. Also 2 a day after you remove all the extra packaging makes them great for the money i never understood the mre hate

>Hot or cold?
Warm for dinner, cold for lunch. Breakfast can go either way, but typically it's "just add water" cereal/granola since my water is the coldest it will be at that point and my full fat powdered milk is terrible with warm water. (Nido, made my nestle. See: Mexican supermarkets)

>Most unhealthy food?
Moutain house eggs with bacon. Based on a 2000 calorie diet this small breakfast meal provides approximately 200% of your daily cholesterol requirement.

>Favorite
I'll just describe how to cook it. (Large batch to feed 6 or so people)
Add 1 lb lean ground sausage to a pan. Jimmy Dean sage is close to the local stuff I eat. Cook that and chop it up good with your spatula. Once the sausage is cooked, do not drain (that's why it needs to be lean- cheap shit like gwaltney will leave way too much grease). Add a dozen eggs or so to a bowl and break them up like scrambled. Add to the sausage. It'll look like vomit at this point, but it cooks up nicely. Serve in a white pocket pita that's been torn in half. It's easy, only gets one dish dirty, and requires no plates/bowls/utensils to eat.

>Emergency Food
No comment on emergency food.

>MREs
I did 4 years in the Marine Corps. Ate MREs during training for 30 days every 6 months. Never checked dates. The 50 man MREs for serving in a makeshift chow hall are far less appetizing.

>Most complex
Not sure. Most of my /out/ meals are simple and only use one pot/pan to cook. I hate washing a ton of dishes when I'm camping. Fried chicken is probably the most complex thing I've ever done and I cooked that on a shepard's stove with the damper mostly blocking the pipe and disposable aluminum trays filled with oil.

Yes: I like MRE's but the weight isnt worthwhile. Oldest one I had was six years.

I have cooked an entire ham with a pinapple&cherry glaze while backpacking once
>>
>>701993
Yeah, but foil doesn't work very well when you're cooking fajita filling, chicken a la king, mac n cheese with additives, or most single pot dishes that will feed your whole camp. Most actual cooking (backpacking just add water doesn't count) that I've done was in scouts when we were car camping and I was cooking for 5-6 people.

Most complex food ever cooked while /out/.
I made mango and chicken risotto. Ingredients I carried included: 10 chicken breasts (ice packed, foiled) 2kg brown rice, turmeric powder, garam masal, cayenne pepper, cumin, garlic and chicken stock cubes. I also foraged wild mushrooms, parasol and field.
I'm /fit/ and like chicken and rice so I made the whole crew supper after the first days hike, the next day I ate tinned peaches and protein bars.

Yeah the fish were small enough to just cook em on a stick ... Never understood the usfags who will fillet a fucking 4 inch perch to throw away 90% of meat the tiny fish have. Filleting a fish is retarded waste of meat if you are practicing survival and it makes no sense to do that because cooked fish comes off from bones very easy. If the fish is bigger just make a grill with green sticks and put coals underneath... Just dont let the coals burn with flame

>crap

They might make you ruin your sphincter if you run on them for over two weeks, but they are good for keeping you fed and/or energetic. Something like 2000+ calories in one meal, and the average caloric expense for a soldier in combat is around 6000-8000 daily.

Can't really beat that for having nondescript meals, so they usually pack two a day. That's what we did, anyway. They were made for military use

Protip: the burger mac MRE is vomit inducing, DO NOT EAT IT please for the love of god
>>
>Do You favour warm or cold meals?
It depends on the season. I like to heat things up when I'm on a Winter hunting hike. Otherwise I don't really care.

>Most unhealthiest outdoor food?
I've seen people bring nothing but candy claiming it's high calories and they need it because of all the hiking. That shit is full of sugar and it makes them sluggish and annoying. The only time I ever bring candy is peanut M&Ms for kids (my Sisters, Niece, Cousins, etc.)

>Is it Your favourite outdoors food?
What is? Probably anything that I kill and cook on my own while hiking. It's the best feeling.

>What do you think about emergency food (BP5, NRG5) ?
Never tried any.

>Did You ever tried MRE's?
Yes. I bought $300 supply and brought nothing but those until they ran out. I didn't really like it. They taste kind of Chef Boyardee tier but stop your pooper up for weeks.

>What was the oldest MRE you ever had?
I never checked.

>Bonus: What was the most complex food you ever cokked while where in the woods?
