Hello I tried posting this thread on /diy/ but perhaps this board is more appropriate.
I want to buy a book on vegetable/herb/fruit growing since its something I want to get into. Ideally it should be one huge tome full of everything I need but one introductory book + one advanced seems reasonable too.
I have tried googling some recommendations but have not found anything that I like, most books seem to be full of pictures but little useful information. Can anyone suggest anything?

The Encyclopedia of Country Living.
You can find a .pdf of John Seymour's The complete book of self-sufficiency.
It's a little old fashioned but an interesting read, and covers all the basis so you have a good working knowledge of the whole system and the interplay between different elements.

This has tons of good stuff in it. So does the Vegetable Gardener's Bible.
>google around a bit, there's a pdf version of an older edition of that encyclopedia available online free
Alright, thanks for the replies
