Pic related: The skrama, a heavy knife mostly meant for chopping wood and similar things, but also usable as a common knife. The concept seems pretty similar to the kukri to me, and I was wondering what /out/ thinks about it. Which one is superior, forward curved or (almost) straight blade? What are the advantages and drawbacks?
>>
Seems like a half decent design to me I would love to see one in person now
>>
If you have a kukri on /out/ people will give you shit but if you have a skrama they will say
>oh shit, they're back in stock?
>>
>>628417
I might have to forge one for Myself I like the look of it
>>
>>628417

that looks like the greatest thing ever

Seems breddy gud, I'd need one to test though before committing.
>>
>>628417
IMO the advantage of a forward curve or rather having the cutting surface below the plane of the handle like a hatchet/kukri and to some extent a parang is you do more of the work in wood prep with the wrist, it feels more natural and accurate to me for making kindling and the like. The drawback is it's inferior for broad stroke clearing than a straight bladed camp knife/machete.
>>
>>628417
What's it like working for Varusteleka?
>>
>>628417
>balance point in the middle.
>chopping knife.

pls tell me this is bait..?

I really have a good idea for an /out/door knife. but sadly my little garage doesn't have the space and I don't have the funds, to produce prototypes.

If anyone is honestly interested I could maybe work up some 3d model or something. and share it.
>>
straight blade for straight men. Bent blade for bent men.
>>
>>628558
>>628654
That's valid points there. Do you know any good kukri alternatives? I dislike the handle shape and the leather sheathes.
Then again, a straight blade means easier sharpening I guess?
>>628625
Lolno. I was considering the skrama because it's rather cheap compared to most kukris, be they traditional or "tactical", but I still trust them to not fuck up the steel. It also has a nice handle and a good sheath available.
>>
>>628675
Do you wanna chop wood with it?

You have to decide on one thing, how much "chopping" do you do?

on a scale of 1 to 10, Ten you body slam wild animals and chop them to pieces. one being, you chop only to break dead tree limbs off. no bigger then your index finger.

ANYWAYS there's a website that's legit, I've used it many times, no issues paypal is accepted shipping is rather fast for the places they come from. I'm not paid by them or anything like that... just use google.

machetespecialists

There's lots of half rate flea-market china grade steel on there.. but if you look carefully you can find the good 1095s. and such..

1075 is also bretty good for thicker blades.

Look for the Condor 11 Inch Pack Golok Knife. on there, I had one, that I lost somehow. its what you're looking for, I just checked tho and their out of stock.

Really the prices are pretty damn fair for what you get. tho I will warn... some of the grinds on these things are fucking HORRIBLE. so depending on what you get, you might need to have a bench grinder and a few hours to get a proper bevel.
>>
>>628417

Please some foo riddle me this:

Why would you use a skrama instead of a

>Hatchet

>Busse or great chopper

>Leuku

>Quality folding saw

Why?
>>
>>628697
A chopping knife is less bulky and can also be used as a knife. Feel free to discuss chopper vs axe vs saw, but I was asking for chopping knifes especially.

Also, the Skrama is like half the price of an ESEE Junglas and like 1/5 the price of a Busse.
>>
>>628702

So if it comes down to chopping knives how is the Skrama better than a production Leuku, Ontario or Becker?

And that's not considering Condor.... cheaper than Skrama also
>>
>>628675

Himalayan Imports for kukris

Busse, Scrap Yard, Becker, Ontario, ESEE, Condor for big choppers

And I'm missin some for sure
>>
>>628704
Condor is actually about same price here.
Also, it looks less cool and has a confusing amount of models without a proper description of the different roles of it.
Also, forgive me I posted the first example coming to my mind. Seems /out/ reacts to it like /k/ reacts to glocks...
>>
>>628716

Have you considered buying a better knife second hand?

At those levels there isnt any difference.

I strongly recommend buying a used Scrap Yard 1111 or 1311
>>
>>628434
Also miles pricer.
>>
>>628654
The balance point is in the middle so you can actually use it for some finer working, but gripping the long handle at the back gives really heavy chopping power. Clever design, and it actually works.

If you understand German i recommend watching this, he explains things well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ua_xBBhz4A

I need help from a finnbro or someone that lives up north.

I'm up to a 7 day trip through the forests of Finland near Ivalo at the end of winter.

What knife should I carry?
>>
>>629232
That depends, are you alone, what other tools do you carry (axe, saw), are you going to make a lot of fires or not?

A good reliable puukko is probably all you need, probably.
>>
>>629232
Traditional puukko of any length you deem necessary.

So I'll try to buy one from this guy then
>>
>>628697
it's just personal preference. People who take big knives tend to take smaller ones anyway though so it defeats the purpose. They also forget you can use an axe like a knife depending on the task, especially if you have a tomahawk and remove the handle.
>>
>>629319
Is a nice looking little puukko, who is the smith?
I have one very, very much like it.
>>
Is Varusteleka known on this board? They are popular in binland and sometimes shill in Ylilauta's /out/
>>
>>629613
>Varusteleka
I've seen it mentioned, but Mora has a stronger presence here.
>>
>out of stock
I NEED FINNISH METAL!!!

Eh, actually I'll likely make due with a Cold Steel offering to curb this blade lust.

But this is quality stainless like my Moras and has such an easy to sharpen blade...
