These cities are dirty because businesses are burdened with job killing regulations. Wealthy people would create more jobs if it weren't for the high taxes they pay. In Pittsburgh we don't lose power that much. Biggest worry is blizzards.

For power I just have a couple UPS computer backup batteries. If we lose power I disconnect them. Gives me enough power to keep my phone and netbook charged for a pretty long while. I also have a tiny 800mAh pocket charger for my iPhone.

I would like to eventually have a solar Lithium battery set up that can power more things, by my battery lanterns work well enough.

Biggest worry is freezing without power.

I've got a Ryobi 2000W I bought several years back for $550 from Homey Despot and the first time I ran it, the oil drain plug vibrated out as it hadn't be tightened enough and the generator automatically shut down but other then that, it's worked fine the two times I've had to use it since then.

I would suggest that no matter which brand of generator you get, install a three-way petcock on the fuel line, so you can easily drain any remaining gasoline before storing it.
>>
>>1097289

On my get-to-it-someday list, I plan on having a power inlet box installed and wired into one buss bar of the breaker box downstairs, so that my fridge, furnace and a few other outlets can be easily powered by the generator without having to run extension cords all over the place.

There are now duel-fuel generators, gasoline and propane.
>>
>>1097298

A common rule of thumb with generators, is that you’re paying for the decibels (that is, fewer decibels = more money) and the ones that are quieter, such as these; >>1097285 >>1097289 use an alternator that provides a “clean electrical current” or “pure sine wave” that is safe for use with modern electronics (like LCD tvs and computer monitors) while the traditional type generators, use a generating head and are loud as fuck and generate a “crenelated” or “stepped” sine wave, that’s fine for stuff like power tools but can fuck up sensitive electronics.

Propane will literally last forever, the tank will rust away before the propane goes bad.

>They often vent the engine heat towards the tank to keep it up to pressure.

The only time a propane tank will vent gas, is if it's filled to max capacity in the winter and then subjected to high heat in the summer (while still at max capacity) and even then, only a little bit will vent.
