any advice on good trains in Bulgaria and the surrounding

Most of the trains are old and shitty, often late, the people who work on the stations and in the trains usually don't speak English.

This is all true. Especially the not speaking English part. Took forever for the ticket-checker to figure out that we didn't understand him. I took the Septemvri-Dobrinishte narrow-gauge line when I was there two summers ago.
