So, I'm off to do some hiking in Japan in a month or so.
Does /out/ have any advise on being outdoors there? What's nippon's attitude to the "freedom to roam"? Will I be victim to forced sudoku if I go off hiking in non-park areas?

Gonna be humid as fuck, where abouts in japan are you going?
Should be okay to hike wherever as long as it's not somebody's property (wouldn't worry about this too much, people in JP don't own acres of land like in the states or parts of Europe so its pretty obvious if you end up in someones garden or a farmers field) or it seems destructive in some way
Again depending on where you go, take some bear bells

I'm heading for Hokkaido, so it won't be too humid I reckon. There will be more bears though, so I'll make sure to procure some bear bells.
japan is very big on ordnung so I can't imagine doing anything not explicitly condoned on the trail rules/etc being very well received

I have my eyes set on a couple of national parks, Shiretoko for sure. But I'm also interested to check out the woods on the western parts of the Oshima peninsula, no parks there afaik, hence my original post. Looking forward to it though.

Dr. Wako lives in Hokkaido. He is an /out/ favorite deer hunter. He is a doctor and hunting guide. You can ask him anything about outing there.
