Best /out/ dog breeds? Big dogs are difficult to travel with, small dogs can't keep up and have no stamina. Medium dogs are where it's at.

Hello dogbert
>>
I've heard it reckoned that medium dogs would be the ones to survive if humans disappeared.
>>
>>1053759
wouldn't doubt it small and big dogs have been genetically raped over the years

Australian cattle dogs do seem to be the best kind but way too much energy

a friend of mine calls them "viejitos" which roughly translates to "little old guys" because she says that with all that white hair they look like funny old people

In order of preference I'd have
>labrador retriever (any color but chocolate, they're slightly too retarded)
>golden retriever
>Chesapeake Bay retriever
>German Shepherd
>Australian Shepherd
>springer spaniel
>husky
The retrievers have the absolute best personality and are true go-anywhere dogs due to their double-layer waterproof coat. Sheps are fucking brilliant and big enough to hold their own against pretty much any wildlife.

However, on that note every lab I've been around simply doesn't know how to deal with wild animals. My first one got the bright idea to go right up to a cow and start barking, which of course pissed it off, then come running back to me going "dad I fucked up help me!" with pissed off cow hot on her heels.

Fortunately the cow got tired/bored before we did. I can totally see them doing that with moose/bear/mountain lions and it ending poorly.
>>
>>1053844
I have a black and brown lab, but the brown one is the better behaved/smarter one I think.
>>
>>1053744
The only every dog breed that I have encountered that has been unanimously friendly and good natured in all cirsumstaces is a brown Labrador.

too much energy is a meme. australian shepherds are smart and good dogs, whether working or living with families. the dogs that DO have too much energy just stand out, because they're so smart that they get into a lot of trouble.
>>
>>1053941
I've had every color of lab, and am around them constantly due to work.

While there are standouts going both directions in every category, on average (and this is scientifically documented) chocolate labs have the lowest functional intelligence.

Mine would ROUTINELY get "stuck" in the fence, because she'd push her nose through a hole and couldn't figure out how to get out (which simply involved pulling her nose back out, it wasn't actually caught/bound/hung up on anything). She'd get on top of her dog house and couldn't figure out how to get down, which involved a ~2 foot jump down onto grass, but she'd jump up and down off my tailgate (a ~4 foot jump) all the time. She never figured out how to use a dog door. She was deathly afraid of tile and linoleum floors, and would stand on the bottom (carpeted) stair and just bark at the damn kitchen floor.

I'll never have another chocolate lab.

>>
How did all you lads meet your dogs? How early do I have to start training a dog to raise a good hiking/hunting buddy? I've only ever had lazy casual indoor dogs.
>>
>>1054225
Get a dog when it's a puppy. 8 weeks old is best to have it fully be the way you train it. As they get older they have habits and previous owners training imprinted on them
>>1054220
Husky best doggo
>>
>>1054233
I agree with that. My girl and I got a German Shepard at nine weeks. She understood "go poddy" on the second day. Taught her to go to her cage within a week. Knows what "outside" means. She's still young and not fully grown, and does nip alot but things are going well. Huskies are so cool.

>>1054299
Not OP but, hip dysplasia

German shepards have been overbred and 99% of what you'll see are health problems due to shitty breeding. Why take the risk having a lame dog when you could choose many healthier breeds or a mutt? Getting a GSD is playing roulette with the future health of your dog.

Honestly, I don't see the point of getting a sled racing dog unless you're sled racing. They aren't nice dogs, they just pull sleds fast. If you get hot summers, then taking them on outside for any long period of time would be cruel and dangerous. But hey, it looks like a wolf bro!

These are definitely not "toppest tier" dogs, with the only exception being huskies during a sled race.
>>
>>1053744
Finnish Spitz, I guess.

Every one I've met has been a hunting dog of some sort. Anyone have personal experience of them?
>>

Hyper dumb fucks. Especially when theyre innahouse. 8+ year old granma dogs dont fucking count

>>1054299
Get one as a puppy, then have fun. They behave like literal retarded hyper children. You have to work so fucking hard with them to get them halfway to smart, then you have to deal with genetics and most of the time you cant beat it. Youll have an OK dog that fucks shit up instead of a great dog that knows when to mind its own fuckin business. But like the other anon said, lol wolf bro
>>
>>1054330
Hunting dogs are shit.

Blue Heelers are good boys too
>>
>>1054458
Hunting dogs are great for hunting. People who buy them as housepets or the like are assholes.
>>
>>1054167
This

A lot of the meme comes from people who buy the wrong dog, like working or hunting breeds, then live in an apartment where they are gone 10 hours a day at work. Dogs get bored and fuck shit up, or go berserk when their owner gets home because they want to go do shit.

That isn't too much energy on the dog's part, it is a dumb choice on the owner's to buy a dog they can't properly exercise. ALL dogs need exercise.

If you want to see high energy, buy a wolf pup.

They look terrifying, but they are the most pussy dog ive ever seen, butter in the hands of friends, and family, such a lap dog, except 3X times the size, and this dig right, it was trained to watch my grandma´s goats, mostly scaring off the tray cats and sometimes moose or deer. the only time it was actually bad was if there was warthog. those dont back off. enough sentimental story.

This is the one thing I never understood. I have ~1,5 year old husky and I don't have a single problem. I'd even say she's perfect and she's not even 2 years old. It was easy to train her, she's a better hunting dog then most of vizsla's in my hunting party.

>>1054572
They bark. But can be prone to vocalizing when bored, hungry, happy, sad, excited. Sound is more yips and howls . It can be luck of the draw or perhaps from the pack mentality. I had 3 growing up on a farm, the big male was very vocal almost all the time. While the 2 females were very quiet.

Wife and i have two fifteen pound used dogs. One terrier chiuaha mix, other a minature spits. They're both worthless as /out/. The terrier gets co,d below 65f and the spits gets hot over 55 degrees. They also have no recoil, how the shit do you train a dog that doesnt want any treats?
>>
My boxer is great in cold weather, she's got enough energy to pull me up mountains while obedient enough to leave squirrels alone. Also despite being 60 pounds her growl sounds like a man eater so I like having a battle buddy should a bear/tweaker/skinwalker *block my path*. Only downside is that shortnosed dogs have trouble in the heat. It means I can't really push myself for too long when temperatures get above 85 or so, but that's not the worst thing. I like the mountains anyway and besides a couple hours during midday it rarely gets that hot above 1000ft. Would recommend, but not really if you live anywhere south of me (VA).

With alot of people these days, dogs are just another accessory to go with their car or they just like the idea of owning x breed without caring for the dogs needs and similarly there are breeder happy to exploit this situation even if it's detrimental to the dogs. My rescue was fucking hard work I get that some people don't want that but I'm proud of us both now. She's gone from timid dog who hates everything to my best friend who generally understands how to behave and who goes everywhere with me. With all those poor homeless dogs I couldn't bring myself to further the 'breeding machine' that is plain cruel when so many loving animals already exist.

Is a staffeh ? It looks a grand dog and I bet very loving. Our last one was a staffy cross and it's weird. I always saw them as aggressive chav dogs and didn't like them. Our local rspca gave you photos to look at and the staffy wasn't showing in that photo and asked to see her. When they brought her out she pissed on a tyre but wasn't sure which foot to lift and it looked like she was pissing while doing a hand stand. We were smitten and wanted her there and then. She never played with other dogs, didn't fetch balls in fact she only really enjoyed tugrope, pissing on things and cuddles with my wife. She never had a problem going /out/ with me but I'm certain she'd rather have been sat on the couch with my Mrs. Wonderful dogs who love people in the right hands. I used to have a bar in the cellar at my old house and she'd love the parties even had her own stool at the bar and was frightfully miffed if anyone sat in it.
>>
>>1055614
She's mostly pit with a good helping of boxer. The pit really comes out in the direct sunlight, she's brindle as fuck in the direct sun.

She's had a shitty life. She was a stray, wound up at the humane society, and then the local animal control (basically the dog pound) where she got into foster care after a while of not being adopted.

Unfortunately she was fostered by a known abuser and her shitty kids. They beat this poor fucking dog with sticks and garden tools. Years later, she will still growl at kids or anyone with a piece of wood in their hands. But with me and my wife she's a total sweetheart.

I'll never forget the first time I invited a friend over after adopting her. She thought that poor sod was a home invader and was about to defend that refrigerator to the death when he went to get a beer. That kinda stuck with me.

Pit bulls don't understand many things, but the shit they understand, they understand very well. Family, food, and home are worth fighting for.

haha, gotta love 'em.

My Golden loves water. If she sees it, she has to go in it, even if it is just for a second. ONe time she ran into a lake with the idea of going after the Canda geese that were there. When she got close they started honking like crazy and she instantly turned around and came out and jumped on me cause she was nervous.

1st was cocker spaniel fox terrier
2nd was a terrier/golden

My golden is from a family that got him and clearly got in over their heads. He was filthy, thin, and scared. They said he never stopped barking, wouldnt house train and tore up everything. They had him for a month. My grandmother has had 6 rescued goldens so ive known them all my life

Had him broke in three days, fattened up and now he is pretty much a typical golden, friendly, energetic, great swimmer

I'd love to get either an ACD or a Finnish Spitz, but I'm single and I work full time. I do have a big garden though, will they be ok if I supply them with toys and puzzles and food and water while I'm working? I can also provide a dog door and bed in either my house or my garden shed. I've known people that have dogs and just leave them in their garden all day with plenty of things to do so they don't get bored.

I hate the fact so many white snobish females use border collies for their baby replacement and call themselves "border collie mamma" or something retarded like that. They're great dogs though.

I have a hunting dog as a house pet, she'll go inna woods with me, but is afraid of a lot. God damn if you see a raccoon though that instinct kicks in and she'll basically climb a tree to keep it there. Been a great dog so far, and despite the fear she will protect the house like a fiend. I also got her as a rescue dog, but I know she was a hunter from the ID tattoos in her ears.

Is 4 years old too old to teach your Golden to properly hunt Grouse with you?

She isn't too gun shy unless you're consistently shooting every 30 seconds. Right now when we go hunting she goes out too far ahead of us. We call her back and when we release her she sprints right back to where she was before which was too far ahead.
She loves retrieving bumpers in the water and will do land too if given encouragement but has shown no interest in putting a dead grouse in her mouth or finding one if we don't see it right away after it is shot.

The gun shy part would be the hardest thing to do with an adult but she seems to not mind that already. You most definitely can teach an old dog new tricks , and believe it or not it's not any harder than teaching it when it was a puppy. I'd say go for it, but first you'd have to figure out what you need to teach her and how to do it.

food stuff are pretty normal just like other big dogs.

extra cost comes in the form of high fences with digging protection and a big cage. when they are teenager they really like to follow the family. so they jump the fence and track you into town. they also need more playthings as they tend to get bored of repetitive stuff. Another "cost" ist the massive time investment you need to pour in to train & entertain them.

I live in an apartment with a Australian cattle dog X border collie and i work during the week. I get up early and walk (run) her for an hour before work then after work we go fishing, bike riding, hiking etc. Weekends I spend much more time out with her.
Today she has been laid in bed all day sleeping, but she will never turn down a good run out.
Working dogs don't need to necessarily be worked all day but they won't do well with minimal exercise...and they'll let you know too.

A friend of mine has a wolfdog. If i recall correct it was 3rd generation pup of a german shepard x full blooded wolf.
I thought it was an awesome dog. She spends hours and hours with it every day, doing an outside job and in the meantime trying to socialize the dog. When he's around he doesn't bother anyone but he sure doesn't like petting. When i first saw him it took me a few hours untill he stood still and actually let met pet him and even then no longer than 10 minutes.
I've never met a dog was so independent, with such a large hunting instinct and that was so utterly fearless. (I saw it chase down cows and horses for sport and be utterly unimpressed as he got charged by a bull or got snarled and bitten at from another dog).
+ it has great stamina, good intelligence and loves being outdoors.
Seemed like a perfect dog for experienced owners who spend a lot of time /out/.

I have no idea about it's health later in life though.
>>
>>1062177
our F3 generation (half blood and halfblood) took some time to socialise, but was fine afterwards. she would just remain on guard for a while or check on guests from time to time. Though she would get extremely protective if she sensed hostility from stuff like yelling. she didn't mind petting but would not come begging for it. she also unable to bark for the first few years until she learnt it from other dogs but did howl from time to time.

wolfdogs sound like great pets but it ends up horribly for many owners. just to hard to train and care for from them to thrive. only something for actually experienced owners that know what they are in for. Luckily our local alpine club offers SAR training for volunteers great trainers and events for the dogs. though even then a border collie would stille be a better choice for almost every one.

There's an abundance of mutts out there that would love to go on adventures. Get em young and train them. Imo all dogs need activity every day. There are exceptions but in general only get working breeds if you can and will commit to doing a lot with your dog every single day. Here's my shepherd lab mutt mix. Smart and friendly he's a very good boy.

I have two ACDs, and I live on about half an acre, which seems to suit them fine. I am looking at taking the younger guy out to some parks with me- does anyone have any suggestions on how to train them for that sort of thing? My older ACD is pretty lazy and has been edgy around other people and dogs since getting attacked as a puppy, so I'd probably just take the pup.
For anyone interested in them, I would highly recommend them as companions if you have the time. They are one of the most loyal dog breeds, and I've lived with ACD's my whole life. Hell, my dad loved his best bud ACD more than anything- he cried when he passed more than he did at his mothers funeral.

Are small dogs really not good out dogs? What about trails that aren't extremely rocky/mountainous?
When I was younger I had a chihuahua who was very energetic (not a toy kind but very skinny with long legs). Granted, I definitely should have given him more exercise but he could basically run on walls. My dad would sometimes take him to the mountains/hills where he works and he would spend all day exploring and sometimes playing with the Rhodesian ridge back of my dad's client. One time he got lost somewhere up there and the animal control which got him said he was so quick he was almost impossible to catch. Also a crazy good escape artist.
Aren't there also plenty of small breeds which were breed for outdoors stuff?

Get a rat terrier. I have one he is 6 years old and 16lbs. We hike up to ten miles and honestly he can keep going for at least 5 more miles. Also he has yet to meet an obstacle he could not do. He also is quite and only growls when he smells/hears 'danger' (people, bear, coyote). That admittedly is prob training but they are smart and easy to train. While I have yet to have an issue he is only 16lbs and if he did get injured I can easily carry him indefinitely.

back in 2006 my wife and i got a dog with a mysterious past from a local shelter. she was a mixed breed, my best guess is, that she was part pitbull and maybe part rhodesian ridgeback or magyar viszla. she was definitly a skilled hunting dog because of her behaviour, a friend, who is a hunter confirmed this. also, she reacted to commands given in slovakian language. she had a big scar on one of her legs so we thought she might got trapped and that's how she ended up "in the system". i have no idea how she ended up in an austrian shelter tho.

anyways, she was the perfect /out/ dog. endless stamina, military discipline if needed, but she was always fun and games innawoods since she always came back when i whistled. she was probably about 5 or 6 years old when we adopted her, unfortunatly she passed two years ago. i still don't want to adopt another dog, i'm not ready for it.

pic related, it's her a few weeks after she moved in with us and we nursed her back to strenght.
>>
>>1064846
Unfortunately no. It's a buzzword so breeders can sell more of their dogs. All dogs produce allergens and no breed has yet been proven to produce less of that allergen on average. If a breeder claims their breed is hypoallergenic or won't cause as much allergy symptoms, run for the hills.

The long
>http://www.jacionline.org/article/S0091-6749(12)01380-2/fulltext

The short
>https://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/07/11/the-myth-of-the-allergy-free-dog/?mcubz=0

However, the good news is that you don't have to pay $1,200 for a hypoallergenic dog. Simply test any dog out to see if it gives you a reaction (any dog can produce more or less of the protein/s that may cause your allergies), make sure you brush regularly and bath the animal when it should be bathed, and keep your house clean. Maybe take allergy pills if it's really bad.

I dont know how I didnt come and ask on this board before. Heres the thing:
I am someone who doesnt excersie at all. Why? Well i am at home 90% of the time. Its a big house though. And I just dont find any motivation to go out. Stopped talked to my friends long ago and I can easily live without going out for days.

Anyways, on December I will be moving to a cattle ranch. Big open area of course. I love it there. I know I dont go out for a run or to the gym, but I like walking a lot. Specially among the mountains.

Will definitely need a dogo there. And was wondering if getting one right now would be a good idea. Medium dog. Blue heeler maybe. I grew up in said ranch and im familiar to them. But this dog I would like to get in the cabin of my truck as well as ride on my horse (seen this before). What I am trying to say is that I want that dog to be with me at all times.
Thing is Ive never train one before and I read somewhere that one should never get a dog just for the company. How true is this?

What do you guys think? Get doggo now or wait until december to ensure his first 4 months are in the ranch?
>>
>>1068400
Dubs Czeckd.

I was thinking the dog could live with me in the city before moving to the ranch. I would like to have this dog sleep with me. Literally having him at all times.

I visit this ranch about once a week. Theres also that...

I am not sure if I could make myself go outside to the city streets for a walk. I dont really like going outside inside a city. Afraid of people or idk. Betafag or hermitfag whatever.

I also read that dogs need to have a lot of different humans and dogs interaction in their first months. Dont think there will ever be much of that...

Remember that I may be wrong in most of the things; I read online.

There's nothing wrong with getting a dog just for the company, in fact, what else would you need it for, if you're not a hunter, or a farmer, or a police officer? However, I would say that a blue heeler is a bad choice for you, it's a very active working dog, and it needs proper training.

>I am not sure if I could make myself go outside to the city streets for a walk. I dont really like going outside inside a city. Afraid of people or idk. Betafag or hermitfag whatever.
Again, you shouldn't adopt any dog then.

>doesn't go outside of house
>doesn't know how to train a dog
>wants one of the most energetic and easily bored breeds there are
Don't buy an animal based on where it will be for only 4 months of it's life. I don't think a blue heeler would be the best for you, they prefer having a job to do and will get destructive if they don't get enough mental and physical stimulation. Because of how smart they are, they are actually more difficult to train. Before you even get a dog, I'd suggest getting into the routine now. I tell this to all adopters, not just ones who don't leave their house. Go for a walk first thing in the morning and sometime in the evening, see how long you're willing to walk. That will help determine what energy level you should be looking for in a dog. If you were going for a pure bred, you won't get the dog in 4 months if you're getting from a reputable breeder (which you should be). Puppies can't go on long walks right off the bat, but they do need to go outside very often to pee and poop. The rule of thumb is that they can only hold their bladder for one hour for one month of age, stopping around 8 months. SO an 8 week old puppy needs to go out every 2 hours. I wouldn't suggest a puppy for someone who has no idea how to train a dog. You'd be better off with an adult dog to fit your activity level.

>>1068402
If you don't plan on going outside, you shouldn't get a dog. That is that. Puppies do have socialization periods and if you miss them, they will become stranger aggressive which is a huge problem in a city where there are quite a few people, not to mention the need to have people work on the house or going to the vet. Dogs also need to go outside for mental stimulation. They will actually go nuts if they stay indoors for most of their lives.
>>
>>1068402
If you are still really insistent on getting a dog, try fostering a dog for a few weeks and see how it goes. I am not sure if a rescue or shelter will let you foster one if you don't plan on letting it outside, but I imagine the plan is that once you get a dog you will want to go outside more often? If you think an adult dog is going to be harder than a puppy, you will be unpleasantly surprised when you get a puppy.
>>
>>1068466
Well I meant to say that right now I dont go out to do stuff other than going to the bank, workshops (I buy and sell construction machinery. So I am seldom inside buildings or offices. Most of the time I am either home or at the yard, the latter is huge and theres like three adult dogs there (rot and dobermans).what I mean with not going out 90% of the time is that I dont go out to bars or parties or any of that. I simply dont socialize like that. And thought this could be good for a dog since I can give him my attention full time.

I must remark that this life will end in 4 months and will change. I still wont be "going out" (friends and lots of people) but I will be living in a cattle ranch where a dog will be able to roam in thousands of acres and live among other animals. Specially cattle.

>never trained one before
Well Ive seen these videos where dogs help ranchers move cattle around and even get them inside trailers.
Thisbis where ive got no idea on how to train them for that. Never done it before.

I use to have a cat. She lived for 16 years and never liked getting on a vehicle.

>>1068563
And thank you both for saying your thoughts. If this is a dog por a person who has lots of friends and spends his days in a gym or training outside for the marathons most of the day. Aye, this dog isnt for me.

And I can get a blue heeler pretty easily. Dogs are always for sale. Specially blue heelers. My state market is mostly cattle ranches. And Blue heeler is their dog of choice. Theres always blue heelers for sale. Even with pedigree. I dont live in the US though. Things work a little different here when it cones to buying a dog. Hell I may even get a mixed dog or a Streeter breed.

Also, where can I read more about training a dog? Google always gives me the same results.
>>
>>1068586
I will also like to add that this is me right now. And that I want to read and study more to see if I can adapt to what a dog needs. I am not getting a dog tomorrow. Nor next month. Hence why I am asking everywhere and everyone about training / having a dog

My golden is pretty small (<50 lbs/23kg) and has short fur. She starts to limp on a paw when I take her for walks around 20f/-7c. If I leave her outside in the yard she will stay out way too long her own limping and then look at me like I'm going to carry her inside. I'm pretty bummed about that because I live in Minnesota so cold weather is very common.

I've tried dog booties and the rubber balloon/condom ones seem to work well for her staying outside longer. They're difficult to put on but they rarely slip off on accident.
>>
>>1068966
My guess would be arthritis, my dog also limps in cold.
>>
>>1068966
Get 'er some boots.

In addition to being fucking hilarious to watch, they help keep the pads of their feet from freezing.
>>
>>1068966
have you tried musher wax? Might help her little paws.
>>
>>1069249
Seconding this. Bitches love mushers. I use it as a second line of defense in extreme cold/rocky terrain. Boots are the best investment I've made, the 15 min of watching my dog get used to them was with the $20 alone.

I have a 2 year old cane corso bitch.
She's a show line doggo, but has great energy despite that.
Best breeds I had experience with for /out/:
-Croatian Shepherd
-Terriers and mixes
-german shepherd

She's not bad, but it kills me to know her 45kg ass will start falling behind in few years.

Honestly people think various shit when they see her, from lab to rottie (???) to a pit and some just know the breed.
Honestly we have some whackos in my small town so it's better for her to scare them off than for me to have an interaction with highly possible nuts people.

Alaskan Mals, like many old world dogs, are prone to being aloof and chasing small animals. This makes them hard to have off leash. They shouldn't live in a hot climate, if you happen to find one n a rescue or something that's fine but don't support a breeder in Tampa, FL or in Nevada or some shit. THey are very active dogs, just because they aren't AS active as Huskies doesn't mean they don't need a ton of exercise a day still. They have 'blow out' periods of shedding that you will have to deal with. You can not cut their hair because it's a double coat and it will never grow back right, and the new hair would be unable to provide protection from both heat and cold. They are smart but that doesn't necessarily mean easy to train.
This is just in general, your indivual experience may vary.

What is a dog that doesn't need constant Vetinary bullshit? One that won't die from running through a field or get some horrible parasite eating its eyeballs if I don't pay thousands in medicals a year?

Poorfag and rural guy here. i want my dog to be healthy but it's just not practical to have a high maintenance dude. What is a friendly and loyal breed that won't die if it doesn't get shots every week and doesn't eat the finest Pedigree Venison?

A Beagle might be the optimal choice for you, they're friendly and loyal hounds and had all the dog autism bred out of them over the millennia they've been around. But it doesn't matter if it's a mutt or a top tier show doggo, there's no way of avoiding parasites other than staying in the basement all day. As far as costs go, parasite prevention isn't too bad, and is well worth having a four legged friend in the woods.
>>
>>1075054
No breed is immune to parvo, distemper and rabies if that's what your asking. opossums on the other hand have a very low risk of rabies due to their internal body temperature being generally too low for the virus to survive.

>>
>>1077086
It kind of depends on the dog and it's structure. Look for harnesses that don't have metal or plastic bits where sun is going to hit it (they get painfully hot very quickly when in direct sunlight), ones that won't rub on the arm pits (or if it has to, at least a material that is soft and squishy) and one that will not pull on the trachea in the front. It should fit snuggly, but not tight.

Belgians are the greatest dogs- there are 4 flavors:

Tervuren
Groenendal
Malinois
Lakenois

all the same dogs essentially with different coats.

..but the Mals have gotten a little off kilter since there are so popular for police/military work...breed for agression and not balance has lead to some Maligators...

Tervurens are the best...
