It's not awkward if you do stuff and are gone all day. If you hang around the campground sitting in front of the fire and drinking beer alone then it's a bit silly.

I don't know about over there but where I live I have the legal right to camp wherever I damn well please, as long as I don't do it too close to someone elses house, (basically a border that can be up to a maximum of 70 meters from the house).
