How hard is it to /out/ barefoot? Obviously our ancestors did it, how much is it going to suck before I can do it too?

Is there a way to ease into it without tearing the crap out of your feet?

The oldest known leather shoes is 1000 years older than the great pyramids.

You want to hike like your ancestors? Just make a simple pair of leather sandals.

Shoes have been around for 40,000 years. And human's feet now are vastly different compared to humans 40,000+ years ago.

It's not worth it unless you have some deep spiritual reason to try getting into it. There are distinct reasons we developed footwear, chief among those being not stabbing our soles on every branch in the entire forest. You'll feel like hot shit until you're 15 miles into the wilderness and gash your foot on something and be wishing you had that precious inch of rubber.

All this chaos reminds me of the last barefoot thread. Seems like people on both side of the fence get pretty salty over a lot of nothing. Either way, I highly advocate for going barefoot whenever possible, but you NEED to know what you're doing if you want to go /out/ without shoes. Definitely make sure to ease into it. Start on pavement and loose gravel, then make your way up. Forest floors tend to be nice and soft, but they do hold hidden dangers in the form of rocks and twigs. I've developed thick enough soles that I can get fairly deep gashes without drawing blood, but I'd for sure be screwed if I did what I do now with normal, soft feet. Another thing to keep in mind is that your feet are built to carry YOUR OWN weight. That means hiking with a heavy backpack is a big no-no. I'd recommend getting Lems boots for the actual hiking around bit. They provide enough cushioning that you won't mess up your feet with the weight of your pack, but they're thin enough that you still feel what you're walking on. Also, never run on your heels. It's kind of a meme in the running world that guys read "Born to Run" and then go off preaching to everybody about how terrible heel-striking is, but for real, do not do this barefoot. You'll get shin splints if you do it too much.
>>
I've seen a guy go off track hiking with no shoes. He hardly ever wears them day to day so is used to it.
>>
>>1025886
Running barefoot actually saved my shins. I fell for the vibram meme, but they do actually help where you strike your foot

There was a drama teacher at my school who always used to walk around barefoot. We'd see him uptown during the summer walking on hot tarmac like it was cool grass. I guess you get used to it eventually. My feet are fairly leathery because I walk around the house barefoot all the time, but I'm yet to actually go /out/ like it.

I hope you're okay, Mr Benson. I've not seen you in years.

I did some walking around barefoot this weekend. I walked up a pretty high ski slope, which was mostly sandy but also had rocks and dry weeds, which are hard on the feet. The rest of the walk was harder because there was less sand and more dry, prickly weeds. I only ended up with a few holes in my feet, so I am well on my way to Hobbit-mode.

I have been walking around barefoot outside for most of my life, so I think I do have some sort minor tolerance. Wearing socks and shoes/boots all the time during the winter is what sets us back up in colder climates.
>>

Why the fuck would you not just make shoes?
Split a log, make a plank, sand it down on a rock, tie it to your foot.

Your ancestors that wandered shoeless were not the genetic result of thousands of years of pampering their feet. The ones who survived to adulthood assuredly had tougher feet than a modern human. We adapted by inventing shoes thousands of years ago, so modern human feet are not as tough. You won't last too long without something covering your feet before you get miserable and change that, or you step on something dangerous.

The argument was, that despite there being cultures and people who developed shoewear early, lots of others never did. And kept having demanding lifestyles while staying barefoot.

And the topic of this thread is ascertaining, whether the a person who has worn footwear for most of their lives, could in theory "train" to function similarly well during/ /out/ activities, and how best to go about it.

I believe you. I heard from Cejrowski that that's how feet of wild tribes look, that's how it SHOULD look, it's the shoes that disfigure our toes.

I myself use flat, thin, kung-fu slippers, they work well for me. But there are other solutions, if you want to walk flat, capitalism made sure of it. :P

Tried to jog barefoot but skin is to delicate, and I don't have the time to work it into being thick.
Also - jogging flat helped my fucked up knees a lot.

I've been walking barefoot most of my time these last 3 years, avoiding cities as much as possible.
I've never found any suitable shoes to my feets, and the more i would experience walking barefoot the harder it was to put on shoes.
I would eventually compare wearing shoes to wearing mitten.
There's no such things as feeling what you are walking on : leaves, mud, branches, rocks, sand, grass ; these are matter and textures that are PART of going /out/ : theres no way to know your environment if you can't feel it.

So take of your shoes, close your eyes, and feel the adventure of walking barefoot :)

I did a brief googling which led me to try putting rubbing alcohol on my feet for about two weeks. Then I started walking barefoot on paved surfaces every other day. I started at five minutes and added five each time.
When I got to 20 minutes I got greedy and went for about 27 instead.
Earned big blood blisters on balls of my feet, put me mostly on my arse for weeks.

I routinely go barefoot on weekends, and am perfectly fine going all day with no shoes as long as I don't have to walk on gravel. ITT I was more thinking about walking through the woods with no shoes. This is still difficult for me to do. It is one thing to walk around your yard or even pavement barefoot. It's completely different to walk on a gravel road or dry fields filled with prickly undergrowth. That's why I'm wondering if it is even possible to build up a tolerance to that level of abuse.
>>

Really? I know shoes deform feet but in terms of resistance to pointy and abrasive things I doubt there's nothing our recent ancestors had that we can't get through conscious effort.

I'm thinking more that our ancestors started making the shoes because there was environments they simply couldn't or didn't want to walk in even with conditioned feet.

I make the barefoot transition a couple years back and use minimalist footwear now because practicality. Regarding the transition to barefoot...biggest issue I had was the development of previously unused muscles in my legs. Would walk to and from work each day and had to do serious stretching to keep my lower/outer leg muscles from freaking out. No issues after a few months though. Feet and legs are still adapting and changing though.

>>1051298
This. Lems are good. Also check out Xeroshoes. Avoid Vivo. Their customer service is nonexistent.
>>
>>1025705
It doesn't sound too hard, why not try it?
>>
>>1051293
I second that about the tactility. A walkab/out/ is not just about the vistas, what you can see. You can hear the winds and the birds, feel the cold air or the burning sun, taste the water from a spring or the snow that is about to fall, smell the damp forest floor. You experience the landscape with all your senses. When you walk barefoot, you get to touch the landscape as well. I liken it to when you see a fascinating artefact in an antiques shop or a museum: you want to hold it in your hand, feel its texture, and if you are allowed, you will automatically pick it up. Well, your feet are basically hands. Same nerve endings and all of that. So much information and experience is relayed through the soles of your feet if you let them feel. Wearing shoes is like holding the wonderful artefact wearing gloves, or having sex with a condom. Lots of times it makes every kind of sense, but when it's safe, it's so much better without.

I can muse for pages on the ways barefooting is the knees of the bee, but at the end of the day it has to be experienced, yet for the full payout it takes a lot of conditioning, and for that you need to have an interest, a curiosity about it. Without it, it's like selling coriander to one of those people for whom it tastes like soap. Or something.

That "statistical myth" is in itself a myth. We don't have such data to make those claims anyway and they only apply to 21st century+. Further, when looking through old burial sites you tend to find that those that did live beyond infancy tended to die before 45.

It's a fact that people used to die of complications and diseases which we consider trivial now. Those "ancestors who went bare foot" people keep refering to where likely not even human but an ancestor to the modern species of human and if their feet where anything like ours, they weren't running through the forest bare foot because that way leads to infection and death, they would've worn foot protection as well. Our closes animal relatives don't run after prey on the forest floor either.

Lately I've been using them as house slippers too, super convenient to slip them on. I took them on a canyoneering trip once; had these hiking shoes because everyone said Vibrams would kill my feet after a while, but when we deshoed to cross some water I just put on the Vibrams and went the rest of the way, including climbing up and down rocks and a few rappels. Comfy as fuck.
