How would I go about teaching myself environmental studies/science? I'm interested in learning for the sheer sake of knowledge and I don't care about careers or schools (which google thinks I do). What are the best resources?

MIT open courseware might have environmental engineering or environmental sciences. I'd start there.

Well that shit is quite neat and I didn't knew about it. I'm not opie but I kinda have some good amount of free time and I can use that tool to educate myself instead of watching tons of youtube shit and shitpost on chan so much. Thanks anon.

i went to new zealand in undergrad. about 3 hours before i got to lake toupo i got a call from a friend to tell me that my (now ex) gf cheated on me about 48 hours after i left for a 6 month trip.

i was getting a locals only tour of lake taupo and all i could think about was how angry i wasand what i was going to do. thankfully

A) lake taupo from the wooded side is unbelievably gorgeous that i got over it quick
B) it was so emotional that now i have such a clear image of lake taupo engraved in my mind and while i am way over the girl i still get to keep the image.

TLDR; Books and scientific journal articles.

The best besides that is to directly learn from a specialist of some sort (ie a professor), but you said you don't want to go to school. Lots of books have been written about your local area that you probably don't even know about. For example, I like to fly fish. Upon going to my local outdoor store, they had by the fishing stuff a ton of books about techniques I've never heard of, breakdowns of local rivers and ponds, and much more.

Beyond books are scientific journal articles and textbooks. This is more technical information that is normally used to teach in college and for scientists to read and write about, but it sounds like this is what you're more oriented. Problem is, access to lots of journal articles require money. There are ways to access said articles for free sometimes, and I'll let you figure out how to do that. But some stuff can be very insightful. I do want to warn you, though, lots of articles can be absolute schlock, but youd never know it unless you know a lot about the subject matter at hand. For example, I'm currently trying to write a scientific paper. When I first started to read these journal articles, I'd bring them up to my professor and sometimes she'd shoot some of the shit down so fast. So take everything with a grain of salt. I can go into more detail about why/how these things get published, but that's just another long post waiting to happen.

fuck i replied to the wrong thread.

Nature's Economy by Donald Worster offers a single-volume history of ecology and related ideas.

Before engaging in contemporary texts/issues/theories, it's good to have a sense of that history (which also provides an overview/intro to ideas in ecology).

It was cool to hear anyway, anon.

The best resources are probably to audit some classes at your local university.

This will be cheap/free and gives you access to the majority of resources given to people in those programs. The only parts you will not be able to participate is the labs/exams.

The best part is probably having a professor to discuss the course text with.

is this normal/okay to do? I did it once when my gf was going to uni nut I felt bad just kind of... being there you know?

Ask the professor at the beginning of the course if they mind, or the university may have a program that allows you to officially register to audit the course for a reduced very reduced price.

When I was in university I knew one or two students that audited courses, but honestly, nobody knows if someone is auditing unless its a very small program where everyone already knows each other. Especially if you audit courses where the lectures are in the largest lecture halls, nobody would have a clue.

Having contact with a professor and other students will help a lot for something like environmental studies. There is a lot of information out there about environmental laws and regulations that is out of date or needs context to be understood correctly. That is hard to get from a dry reading of a textbook.
