Only reason you'd throw an axe is if someone was running away from you and you still wanted them dead. And only if you had a second weapon. Also I wouldn't throw an axe if I knew I was really fucking good at it.

I threw hatchets and knives for years (10 to 50 yards). I've not thrown one for a few decades. It is really easy to do, but it is nothing at all like in the movies. One step too close or too far away will make it hit and not stick. That can be you not stepping correctly or the target moving depending on the situation and distance you need to wing it. There's really not much use to it, but it can be fun, like playing yard darts or darts at a bar.
