I'm planning to do some long term camping off of a suzuki dr650 this summer. The main problem I forsee is rain. Any tips for handling rain? My plan is to just set up a tarp and wait it out if it's real bad, and power through if it's only light rain

Riding in rain isn't bad if you're experienced.
A tarp is a fine idea though.
Good riding gear is a must. Dont want to get hurt /out/ alone or get soaked to your skivvies and be miserable.

Waterproof clothes and boots, as well as a helmet with a decent visor.

Drove through rain season in West Africa last year, it's not fun but certainly doable.

Slow down.
You'll lose traction on wet roads, but it's not unmanageable. Can't corner or stop as hard, so plan for that.
It's more funner in the dirt, since you get more traction when the dirt's got some moisture in it.

Hail is miserable. And painful.
Stronk winds aren't much fun either on a smallbike.

This. Shit isn't cheap, but goddamn the gear you wear can make or break a ride.
Buy/bring a few pairs of gloves.

Bring tools/smallparts/nuts/bolts, and know how to fix the moto.
Do a thorough pre-trip and pre-ride check.
Fix little shit before it becomes big shit.
