A Taiwanese hiker was rescued in the Himalayas after spending seven weeks lost. His partner was kill three days before rescue. A major snowstorm hit while they were on a trail and they made the smart and wise decision not to turn back or set up camp until it passes, but rather chug on. Once the blizzard passed and they realized they were thoroughly fucked they lived off of salt and water.

look like a case of bad decisions and lack of skills & experience and maybe some gear.
the area doesn't look too bad, but at above 2600m weather will be the main issue.

also i would like to see the precipice they got trapped on after falling down.

I always see threads about /out/ fuckups. I always read them and think "how fucking stupid some people are". Well, I had my first serious /out/ fuckup this past weekend.
>acquire acreage recently
>acreage has nice mountain stream with cool waterfall
>raining all week
>bet waterfall looks awesome
>decide to hike out to waterfall and take pics
>it's still sprinkling, no one else wants to go.
>short hike over easy terrain so take no gear.
>get to waterfall. Majestic as fuck.
>decide to climb up waterfall for better pics.
>make it halfway easily.
>bet pic from near top would be epic
>almost where I want to be
>boot slips on wet rock (fucking you Vibram)
>as I start going down remember thinking "this is going to hurt".
>smash knees, keep falling, smash ribs, keep falling.
>somehow managed to stop. Death grip on boulder.
>if went 10 more feet would have been off a ledge and 30+feet plunge.

My right knee is swollen. It hurts ribs to take deep breath. Arms and fingertips scraped to hell (from desperately trying to find a purchase to stop fall).

I just set there for a bit literally shaking (hi /pol/). After a bit I realised knee was not fucked just banged. So I made the short trip back to house. Ice up the knee. Ribs hurting less. End up with just scrapes, bruised ribs, and sprained knee. If I had went off that ledge or had broken something I would have been fucked. Would have been stuck there until my wife got worried (I had at least told her where I was going).

This is more indicative of the millennial/genz need to take a selfie everywhere they go.

Seriously, just appreciate the beauty of the waterfall. It's on your fucking property, you can see it whenever you want, why would you need pics, to share on /r/earth porn?
>>
>>1002794
I had told my dad about it. He said he would like to see it. He is in his 70s and unable to get to the spot physically. We had a week of rain and I knew the waterfall would be gushing. Wanted to share the pics with him.

You guys ever read the Death in National Parks books by Michael Ghiglieri? It's pretty intriguing how batshit people can be. His book on the Grand Canyon has a list of people who brought a 16 oz bottle of water for a multiday hike and shit.

have you read / heard "Deep Survival: Who Lives, Who Dies and Why"

quite interesting i listened to the audiobook while walking a long time ago. IIRC it also talks about idiots, people overestimating their skills like going in a storm swollen river because i'm a hardcore marine. But also about children, and "innocent" people that just survive a plane crash in the mountains. or just don't know any better and plan to do the grand canyon in a day top to bottom and back up in sandals in the summer departing at 11 am.

Haha. Partially true anon. Ever since Obama care fucked up the insurance world my insurance (which I get through work) has like a $3000 deductible. Here is the weird part. All routine medical treatments are covered 100%. Yearly checkups, dental visits/cleanings, flu shots, etc. If I have to go to the ER for any reason the $3000 deductible kicks in. Luckily the company I work for gives me $1500 a year in a medical savings account that I can also contribute to tax free. I work at a hospital. Before Obama care my insurance worked like this. Have anything done in network cover 100%. Have something out of network it's covered 80%.

I remember a really sad one I heard about while working at the NPS. A French couple and their 6 year old son went for a hike in White Sands with only a single 16 oz bottle of water in the heat of the day. They only got about a mile and half out before the dad collapsed, and the mom gave the kid all the water while they were trying to get back and also collapsed. Kid survived but the parents both died.

I live in Canada and it's hard to get treatment for serious conditions because there's no money, no doctors and a metric fuckload of arabs defrauding the medical system. I'd rather get treated than die waiting for a doctor. People here travel to the USA for treatment, cuts wait times down from 2 years to 2 weeks.

I have to pay for the government health insurance plus private insurance because the government insurance doesn't cover chronic problems that aren't life threatening. Both on their own cost around the same as insurance in the US.

communist health plans are actually kind of nice when one is poor as shit and unemployed but once you have to foot the bill for all the people scamming the system and you still don't get treated, you realize it's not actually effective, fair or equitable.
>>
>>1013106
Before some faggot tries to "correct" me, no you won't die for lack of treatment. Life threatening cases are prioritized. The problem is that there aren't enough resources to treat the walking wounded.

That would be plain stupidity. Because a lot of the people that do it, have insurance coverage. Many of those have GOOD insurance coverage.

Like my brother in law. So far he's gone to the ER for:
>small wood splinter in his finger

Greats, from Taiwan... our tallest mountain... Jade Mountain claimed another life too:
77 year old male. vrs a 3,952-meter mountain who you think is going to win in inclement weather?

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A Malaysian man climbing Taiwan's highest peak, the 3,952-meter Jade Mountain, died Wednesday, possibly from hypothermia, Chiayi County Fire Bureau confirmed.
The man, Chaiock Foong, 77, and his friends arrived on Monday at Paiyun Lodge (排雲山莊), located on the west slope of the mountain's main peak at 3,402 meters. They planned to climb to the top on Tuesday morning.

However, they were forced to abort the climb after days of rain made the route too treacherous, firefighters said.

Friends accompanying Foong found him unconscious on Tuesday night and sought immediate assistance. Staff at the lodge performed AED and CPR, while alerting firefighters about the emergency situation. Rescuers braved the weather, heading up the mountain from a hiking gate at 2,610 meters.

After more than five hours of trekking through the night, they arrived at the lodge at 5:40 a.m., on Wednesday, but Foong was already dead.

As the inclement weather prevented a helicopter from landing at the lodge, rescuers and policemen from Jade Mountain National Park carried the body down the muddy trail, arriving at the hiking gate at 11 a.m.

Rescuers urged those who want to scale high mountains to first seek medical advice before embarking on such a potentially dangerous journey.

So...don't cover that stuff, then. Establish a standard for what does and does not merit a visit and a method of applying this standard post-visit. Someone calls for a dumb reason, gets a ride in an ambulance, gets seen in the ER, ER determines patient is fine, insurance/doctor/whoever recognizes that this meets the standard and coverage is denied.
The details would be left up to someone better qualified than me, but just to give you an idea:
>establish pool of common ailments that can be diagnosed at home/easily recognized
>establish pool of non-life threatening ailments that do not merit emergency attention on their own
>on-the-scene assessment of whether patient could have recognized nature and/or severity of ailment did not merit emergency attention (are they senile? young and on their own for the first time and kind of clueless? have they experienced this problem before?)
Combine these three in any number of ways and you'll be like, halfway there.

OR establish a flat fine. That way grandma gets to think twice or three times about calling 911 for company, instead of an old lady who's alone and old and feeling strange and scared calling 911 for help and ending up bankrupt because her retirement savings didn't cover some hospital bills and she can't really make these kinds of decisions anymore but her kids kind of ignore her anyway which is why she called 911 instead of the pharmacy.

Jesus, we all deal with idiots, ok? And yes, some people are mollycoddled and do not see the same shit that you see. But you're just getting indignant. There are solutions to that problem, if you would stop being so sanctimonious for a second and think.

Went out with a marathon runner buddy from Michigan for an 18 mile hike in the Texas summer and he fucking heat catted like 2 miles in.

They say that no amount of being in the heat can acclimate the human body to heat, but I've seen far too many guys from up north in wayyyyyy better shape than me fall out and get heat stroke while I'm still feeling fine.

In toronto if you have less than 15k in assets or are willing to say that you have less than 15k in assets everything including dental and optical is covered...

And yeah, wait times here for simple procedures that are not life threatening can be really long.

And you guys are all freeloading and piggybacking off of the advancements in medicine and treatment that have arisen out of the American system.

Who are "you guys"?
You mericunts seem to have no concept of the world outside your own country. Let's see if you can name anywhere other than "yurop"

It could have been much worse, didn't break anything or fall badly, didn't don't my board. The walk back to the truck with cut feets sucked. Road with sharp pebbles and glass or grass with stickers lol.

Bad move, bud. Without even considering the experience you don't have you won't be in the necessary shape for a trip like that.

Oh hey I love the whole Dingle peninsula area. Ventry bay and the surrounding areas (especially Slea Head) is possibly my favourite place in the world. Never expected to see another 4channer around there, even an /out/ist. Any recommendations on where around there I could do a little camping without getting shot by a farmer?
