What are your favorite characters living the /out/ lifestyle? Reading moomin books as a kid, this guy always made me want to live out in the woods playing a harmonica

not really /out/ but i do love the idea of living in a small village in rural england. high adventures in the english countryside, with only a pack of hard cheese and bread, a small dagger and your boots. i wanna live on a small farm

Gotta admit, i never knew about "The adventures of Tom Bombadil" until about 5 minutes ago.

I always loved him in Lotr and was bummed he got omitted from the movies. He's the true OG of middle earth.

When I was 10, I was genuinely depressed that I would never be a child of the woods that gets called on to save the world, encountering a whole slew of colorful characters and exotic locations, nothing but my backpack and my wits to keep me going. So, yeah, Link. Link was pretty cool.

The dead girlfriend aside, the idea of this huge land filled with all sorts of secret caves, swamps and ruins etc to explore with your horse friend sounds pretty good. Hunting lizards, foraging fruit and honing your archery skills.

I love Snufkin as well. I have great memories from The Moomins. I used to go into the woods, listen to the birds and imagine Snufkin was around somewhere. Honestly some of my favorite memories.

I spent a lot of time in this game just exploring and bowhunting. Beautiful world.

I'm a big fan of Kino from Kino's Journey. She's very quiet and neutral, continually travelling on her talking motorbike having strange encounters on the road and absorbing the wierd nonsense philosophy culture of the people in the towns she passes through. The books are good, hit and miss at times but the good stuff is really good.

these books plus Tom Sawyer/Huck Finn and all of LotR shaped me into who I am today. That includes where the red fern grows (omg the tears). This is almost an exact list of my favorite books growing up, and I am pretty sure i have copies of all of them still 20 years later.

>be lil kid on desert island wash up with Caribbean slave
>stare at sun too long
>blind.jpg
>not to worry, good thing this handy negro is here to keep me alive
>blindness makes me forget i was ever scared of this black man, racial barrier eliminated, all people are equal
>ties us to tree during hurricane so we dont blow away
>he dies or something i dont really remember, but get rescued and oh yeah modern science I can see again
>niggers are black again, oh well

Vice did a story on "the legend of cambo" a while ago, apparently the dude lived in the Alabama woods for 2 years.
Guy was pretty much the epitome of /out/
(this was when vice was still primarily on youtube and not mainstream so don't call me a degenerate)
>>
>>1005563
seen that dude before hes essentially a millennial hillbilly. Excellent sentiment but Im not a fan of the whole backwoods/swampman Alabama style, prefer the northern mountain man motif, but he is out there getting it so props.

also his persona is honestly how i picture about half of the /out/ user base.

I did too, Anon. Or I almost did. I told my sister my plans after I'd been working on them for actual weeks, then she goes and steals my thunder by "running away" that very same afternoon.

>>1005253
They made us read this in school. I ended up buying my own copy to re-read over summer break, along with My Side of the Mountain, Hatchet, Heidi, and a bunch of other elementary school favorites.
>>
>>1005695
I'm starting to really hate NatGeo for shoving all this survivalist/"off the grid" crap down our throats, but I will admit it does make me long for a better life. Also been watching Varg's Youtube videos, they're surprisingly comfy.

The Swiss Family Robinson was one of my fave books when I was in elementary. Picked up Robinson Crusoe when I was in middle school, too. Heidi will always be my favorite, though. Living alone in the Swiss Alps with only a ton of goats and your crotchety granddad for company and healing cripples through the power of FRIENDSHIP, what more could a kid want?

Always loved walking/hiking around where I grew up as a kid, but this book made me want to really see other areas more than I already did.

I'm not sure how he painted such a vibrant landscape with so few words in some areas. Can't think of any other writer that did that as well as him.
