Seriously though: why did Mercedes and BMW turn into such shit meme car-makers? When did the transition from making quality vehicles to making plastic pieces of shit take place?

started in 2001/2002
In 2012 they announced that 'uge initiative to cut costs aiming to increase profits by 3b yuros. At that point it was inevitable that all new models will be glorified shitboxes.
we've come a long way...

US and Euro Mercedes use the same supply sources on all models except for the C-Class. Our C-Classes are built domestically.

mercedes was losing money up until the 90s. they cheapened the cars somewhat to reach profitability. Now they're making good cars again. Not on par with how it used to be but better than the early 2000s
BMW was meh until the 2002 and 2xxx CS/CSL then they became an enthusiast favorite. Cool people bought them and then raved about them and then the normies bought them but weren't satisfied because it wasn't as luxurious or comfy as they thought. Then the brand starts catering to the people who will give them the most profit.
Replace the tech brands with bmw.
