It seems like literally every article about the supposedly upcoming "electric car revolution" always starts off extremely optimistic but then you always get hit with the reality and issues with the predictions later on in the article. This article (https://www.wired.com/2016/02/electric-car-revolution-now-scheduled-2022/) is a great example. Type in "how long will gas cars be around" and pretty much all of the articles that say EVs are coming soon fall into this same trap, while the more pessimistic ones seem a lot more logical and based in reality.
Are EVs actually going to be anything more than a niche product within any of our lifetimes or is it just a meme?
The real question is whether synthetic fuel will take off commercially, and if not, how long it'll take for people to give up on batteries and realize that hydrogen is the future.

Hydrogen is even more of a meme than EVs. Even the biggest EV fanboys know this. Synthetic seems likely, though.
>>17872371
Probably never...
EV's FUD spreading caused many supporters to abandon the synthetic fuel and alternative sensible solutions.
For example, Audi discovered "E-Diesel Fuel" AKA Unicorn tears. It requires just carbon dioxide, water and electricity for manufacture.
Plus, it is free from sulfur and aromatic hydrocarbons, which means it won't smell or cover your car with soot. Audi says that this form of diesel is also readily ignitable.
Too bad, (((EPA))) killed it because they know it
is a definitely sustainable, cheapest, clean fuel.

That's pretty neat. Seems like something to try on a smaller scale in one of those communist European countries first to see how it does.

The EV revolution is happening right now
Hybrids and EVs are just going to be getting more and more popular while gas guzzlers (and particularly diesel cars) are abandoned
Obviously it isn't practical for everybody to switch over yet but eventually they will
Take your fossil fuels and shove them up your arse

Remeber this chap ? he also got fucked over for making cars do 100mpg
>>17872452
>EPA))) killed it
It probably burned really hot and created high nox emissions, which are really bad for people. That's the same thing the whole vag diesel gate scandal was about.

s-sure mr steinbaum, thanks for the input!

Please educate me about how many people VW diesels killed. It's so dangerous yet no one noticed for years.

>this is literally what every EV optimist article sounds like

They only sell now because of tax incentives of 30% or more...and it's not like they are selling vast numbers of them...
How well do you think they will sell when all government rebates/incentives are over?
>>17872739
Don't incentives end after like 200k vehicles or something? Tesla is creeping up on that then.
EVs will fail simply because there isn't enough Lithium to actually power 100% market share of cars.

There will be after we plunder Afghanistan.

>high nox emissions, which are really bad for people
That's a forced meme. US should ban all school bus, Diesel truck, and semi-trailer truck in 50s, but US didn't. Because it didn't affect to the people for many years.
>West Virginia professor says investigation, lawsuit overblown; says soot from “rolling coal” is “absolutely worse” than NOx emissions
>People should understand the idea of absolute magnitude, whether it’s 40 times or 25 times or 15 times, the actual magnitude is lost. Even if it exceeded the regulatory maximum by 40 times, it still is low levels of emissions. Because the standard itself is so low, 40 times is not a huge number. The approach that was used to circumvent the emissions testing procedure is the topic of discussion.
>Soot is absolutely worse because it’s the one thing that has direct health effects. NOx has a longer residence time in the atmosphere, has photochemical affects, and creates ozone, so it’s a long chain process. But soot is quick. It goes into the atmosphere, and you get direct ingestion into the lungs. The health effects of soot are widely proven.
tl;dr: VW did not deserve the monetary punishment of this magnitude. As the article states, what is 40 times of 0.00001??? Apparently indiscernible. The NOX increase was in no way justified 14 billion of monetary punishment.
This is a sign of corruption in (((EPA)))

Who? No serious question I'd like to know more.

batteries are piss-easy to recycle. the more important resource to be worried about is cobalt. Lithium can be extracted from the ocean without much trouble, once the brine fields dry up
