I want to make a track car out of a bmw 3-series.
Should I go with a e36 or e46?
Just buy a gokart
no difference
both are good
try to find a 4 door without sunroof and without retractable rear seats for maximum body stiffness
also do consider compacts
You buy one that's already set up for what you want to do or spend most of the time fixing worn out broken shit as normal for a 20 year old German Car. The $10k rule is true for any M3. You either spend that amount on a nice one or buy one less than that and make up the difference.
That said, either are good but try to go for a ///M car so you're not spending half the time doing "upgrades" a M3 has stock. Even a 20 year old E36 M3 with a fresh suspension, sticky tires, and coilovers will corner like a animal way more capable than you ever will be.
I'd either do a M3 or a swapped E30/318Ti.
Don't bother with a E46 if its not a M car or you're not converting it to one. Open diff, harmonic issues at high rpms, rear subfames tear out, only fit 255s at the widest. E46 M3 is best choice but expensive and you'll feel bad if you wreck it. E36 M3 is what I chose, but due to choosing the 2nd option in my first sentence the fun/maintenance ratio has been rather low. Kinda wish I bought something nicer or I bought a cheap AP1/350Z HR/RX8 instead of falling for the German Car meme. Or I just saved up $15k for a 10 year old Evo/STi.
