I don't know about all cars, but I remember reading the 2016 Toyota Corolla catalog, they advertised that the gated shifter on the automatic Corolla S being cooler and sportier than a traditional up and down automatic gear selector.
Basically they were out of ideas on how to market the Corolla S as a sporty sedan

Gated Shifter: Corolla S with CVTi-S transmission comes with a gated shifter which lets you shift through gated slots rather than just up and down

Honestly I like it better. I think it gives the shifter some feel and when I delivered pizza it lent itself to faster changes from D to R . However I drive a manual now and no regrets

It's designed to prevent you from inadvertently bumping it into neutral while you're rolling down the highway. Also to prevent children from shifting it, since their feeble minds will think it only goes up and down, not side to side.

Personally, the PRND dial shifters of some modern cars are the best automatic shifters designed. They take up minimal space and actually look pretty cool.
