How difficult is it to find an old car again in Canada/the US?

My father had a little white shitbox Lada Niva in Yellowknife more than 10 years ago, and I'd love to see if it's still around,maybe off the current owner to buy it. Same with his old Triumph TR6. If we can dig out the papers, could I look for them via the VIN or something?

Nobody would bother with an out-of-province inspection of that thing, so if it's still running it's still in the NWT. I assume you could just ask around hardly anyone there.
