My entire state sounds like what you described only there's like swaths of wooded mountains or empty fields for literally an upwards of 20-80 miles at a time before you hit the next town of several hundred people. At least basically everyone has guns so as long as you're equally dangerous as anyone else everyone is actually way polite and courteous. Having to worry about a deer jumping in front of your shitbox and hitting you at eye level is a way scarier prospect honestly.
