More like what the fuck is wrong with engineers not making a bridge suitable for standard vehicles.
>>17737194
It's civils, nothing to do with engineers despite what they call themselves.
>>17737194
honestly at that point surely the local council would do something about the box truck genocide, it's obviously happening enough to make it financially viable

>these commercial vehicles are 12 feet tall.
>Lets make the bridge clearing 11'8"!
Was this just an elaborate ruse by a master pranksman?

Oh boy. Introducing the truck graveyard, Storrow Drive.
How long has the 11'8" bridge been popular? I just realized it's the height listed on the 'famous' double covered bridges in old Need for Speed 3 (changed to 11'2" in the ports).

That bridge opened for rail use in 1940, long before any of those trucks were built, I guess the fault lies with the truck makers. Also are US trucks only 12' tall? We go up to 4.95m (16'3" for those still using deprecated units) before a special permit is required with an average height of 4.3m.

well the bridge is almost 80 years old and box truck height hasn't really changed over the years
I'd say the issue was much worse back then before all the flashing signs and the steel guillotine

from wikipedia:
"The 77-year-old bridge cannot be raised, because nearby railroad crossings would also have to be raised. The street cannot be lowered, because a major sewer line runs only four feet (1.2 m) under Gregson Street.["
