Found an 06 S40 that's AWD, 6 speed, and has the T5 engine. The red flag that I see in the ad is that it had the radiator, thermostat, and head gasket were replaced, and the head was machined. I'm assuming something went wrong with the cooling system and maybe the car was over heated. The owner says it was like that for under a week, and it was all replaced in June and that the car runs great now. His reason for selling is because he bought it for his son, but his son can't get the hang of driving manual so he bought him another car.
I've been looking for an S40 or V50 with the T5, AWD, and manual trans for a little while now, and they're pretty hard to come by in my area. Is this issue too much for it to even be worth checking out? If I do check it out, are there any ways to tell if there's any permanent damage that's been done?

I cannot fathom why

Not the OP but I have an S40 and really like the car.
Comfy as fuck, responsive, fun to drive.

I just want a commuter car that I can pay cash for, I find decent looking, is manual, and isn't gutless. I like S40s and V50s and I wouldn't mind owning one.
if you go and check it out, bring a mechanic with you to do an on-site inspection.

take 1000 off your budget and spend a few days in the south looking for a car instead of one that's been up there in the snow for a decade.

Wish I could, but that's not how life works. I can't just "spend a few days" on the other end of the country looking for a car, which I'm not guaranteed to find one. Then I'd have to spend another couple days driving it back.

obviously you look before you visit and have a few lined up before you make the trip.
