My girlfriend is thinking of buying a 2013 Chevy Spark for 5k.

They're not unreliable when grandma-driven. My mum has one, maintained once in a blue moon and it has been running flawlessly for 6 years. 30k miles on the odometer.

as long as you don't have to go on the highway much, you're good. merging is horrendous if traffic patterns aren't playing nice.

I rented a 2016 Spark earlier this year. Thing was the weakest, little shit I've ever had to drive. Any minor gust of wind would set you off your course at highway speed.

Just get a Focus or a Civic, honestly.
