Snow tires.
Stopping distance.
Don't drive like a retard.
Embrace the skids

Find an empty parking lot with some shopping carts and practice drifting till you are accurate down to an inch or two. Winter tires don't replace skill. An idiot will wind up upside down in the ditch regardless of vehicle type, drivetrain or tires.

Did you ever have to drive in a rain?
Now imagine that but three times worse.

move back to texas for your own sake
Snow tires, learn how to tell when your tires aren't getting traction when you start to brake to see if you are going to lock your wheels up and send yourself into a skid, learn how to handle your car while in a skid, remember to pump your brakes and remember to never drive more than you're comfortable with. I drove 2000 miles through a bunch of crazy snow storms in a FWD car with all season tires on it and made it just fine by paying attention, being patient, and knowing how my car feels when I'm losing traction.
