I work at a Mazda dealer and I do have to say the interiors are near perfect for a non-luxury car. It's not just the materials and good looks, it's the awesome layout too. Everything from the radio, nav, and ac controls is just so intuitive and comfortable to use. Highly recommend you sit in one to really appreciate it, pictures really suck for showing off interiors.

Agreed. Mazda interiors are great. After my Mazda got smashed up the insurance company gave me a Chevy Cruze as a rental.

Holy fuck, what a disgusting piece of shit - inside and out. Everything on it felt so incredibly cheap - the plastics were like the kind of plastic packaging you'd throw away after unwrapping a taco kit or something. GM interiors are notoriously disgusting, but that shitbox takes it to another level.

Not sure. All the sales staff thought this too, but they haven't seen any Abarth's come through with them yet

There were a couple of other small interior quirks they pointed out that are apparently supposed to get solved as well

-My brake/gas/clutch pedal all have metal facings, but the dead pedal only has a plastic cover, it's supposed to be metal if the pedals are metal

-Steering wheel and dash have red stitching but the shift boot and parking brake boot don't(still black), it's supposed to be red to match

I like the instrument cluster in my fusion. You can manipulate the info displayed on the two screens solely via controls on the steering wheel and you can see direction or direction/roadname/next turn (GPS, last one if on a route) along with changing radio stations and seeing song info, manipulating the climate controls (fan/set temp, etc.) and a variety of info (trip info, gauges displayed, etc.) on the left screen.

As far as digital vs. analog, analog needles are now driven by computers. I've driven Ford, Chevy, and Toyota cars as rentals for tens of thousands of miles. If you hit a race condition (a condition in software where an input is expected in a certain period of time and the software doesn't get it for whatever reason), the software crashes and restarts. What will happen is while driving, all your needles will dip to zero, go to full movement and back to zero again, and then recover to your actual speed.

So as far as "preciseness" of a digital display vs. analog needle in any new car, don't kid yourself.

>the fucking climate control has only to be operated through the touchscreen

You have to look at it while you're driving or worse you also have to navigate through tabs to reach the AC one.

If the screen broke or froze with the AC stuck on a high temperature at maximum speed (eg. defrosting during winter) you're fucked up

>the steering wheel cover the dashboard and it WILL disturb you when you're driving

>the faggy piano black will be covered in fingerprints after 10 minutes

>the driving position is trash (see Peugeot 308) and you have to move the steering wheel down if you want to see the screen in front of you

Just french cars things.

No it isn't, it's a cheap trick to reduce costs since the same thing has been done by many other car makers, premium also.

I can accept this sort of things from Mazda, Fiat, volkswagen, Opel, Renault, etc., brands which have to keep their prices accessible for the masses, But not from some company charging premium money for a product which should be more advanced both technically and style wise.

The 3.0 TT was the best of the bunch, but also the most tempermental. Non-turbo models are far more reliable and won't cost as much in ownership, but the people I've known who own TTs love them. It's sort of a love-hate relationship, so as long as you have some disposable income and like to problem solve, it looks promising.

FYI though, most 300s didn't come with the digital dash, and I'm not sure about foreign (non US/Canada) markets. Could always upgrade to it if you wanted.

Yes, turbos seemed to foul up a lot. Lots of guys install catch cans almost immediately, because of how the PCV was set up. Basically, it's in a place that *can* allow oil to splash up, effectively venting more than just blow-by out the PCV. You then get a pretty filthy intake, as well as valves.

Like I said, if you like to problem solve/work on a car, it's really a good one. There's infinite knowledge online, and the guys who own them are pretty enthusiastic (I've only seen MR2 owners get bigger boners for their cars).

The cars were also known for some electrical gremlins, so you'll probably get pretty well versed in wiring if you aren't already.

Oh, and like most every T-top, you'll probably get some leaking around the seals if you drive it in the rain.

Not even close to being the same. GM interiors are in a whole other class of shit-tier cheapness. Companies like Mazda offer budget/economy cars with GREAT interiors, made even better when you consider their price point.

GM has always sucked with interiors - always.
>>
>>17713706

An inexpensive substitute for solid wood. Made from thin sheets of wood, usually carved off when trimming/milling larger pieces of lumber. Bonded together with resins and high pressure to create fairly strong, flat sheets of wood product. Due to its unattractive appearance, plywood is almost always relegated to internal/non-visible functions, such as subflooring or wallboards that will be covered up.

Perhaps Volvo will grace us with an OSB interior next? Maybe some particleboard seats?

>>17713704

>>17713707

Don't even try to compare Toyota and Lexus to GM. GM is infinitely shittier, but for a reason. It's not "wasteful" you fucking dolt - it's the hallmark of quality. A high-end automaker who truly cares about quality WOULD mill that piece from a solid stock of oak. They wouldn't slap some fucking Minwax'd plywood in the middle and call it a day.

That reeks of cheap, gimmicky bullshit on Volvo's part. Better off just using plastic with a fake woodgrain texture, it ultimately has the same effect.

And a real automaker would take the time to maximize their use of that stock. If they wanted an interior whose focus was on natural materials, such as real wood, they'd find a few more areas to incorporate it, using up the stock they've trimmed away for the larger piece. Make some hoods for the vents, or a centre accent for the steering wheel. Maybe some thin wood bezels for the gauge cluster. Or the buttons/dials. There's a million options, and Volvo took the laziest approach with this already fuck-ugly interior.

Not a day goes by that I don't find another reason to hate them as a company. I truly hope they DO go "all-electric" by 2020 - it will absolutely be the end of their shitass brand.

FYI, you can bend solid wood too. Typically, if an automaker wants a specific look they'll choose to mill from a solid block, or they'll bend a solid piece.

OR if they're Volvo, they'll send Ahmed to Lowes for some $12.99 sheets.

This. They're nothing like their roots. 850 was a solid, no-nonsense workhorse. It didn't try to be something it wasn't.

Volvo somehow thinks it's now a """LUXURY""" brand, though I'm really not sure when or how they arrived at that conclusion. Their overarching identity has been one around simplicity and safety - NOT extravagance.

And their ineptitude at executing something as simple as a passable interior on a commuter car really shows. Shamefur dispray.

Maybe Volvo should focus less on their fuckin diversity hiring quotas and more on attracting proper engineers and designers.
>>
Why is every car interior today, like the edgiest of edge designs with 600 gorillion buttons?

>""""HIGH END DESIGN FURNITURE""""

That's IKEA-tier shit you've posted. You know literally nothing of what you speak.

As someone who works with millwrights, designers, and clients 5-6 days a week, I can tell you that the shit you posted cost a few hundred dollars to manufacture.

Solid wood furniture is inherently more expensive, and therefore more desirable. Simply finding the correct pieces of wood to work with requires time and human effort - plywood does not. If you don't like the grain you see, you simply bond a different grain to the exterior.

Solid wood grain is continuous - it limits your choices and requires way more involvement. Fuck it up? Start over from scratch. Fuck up plywood? Pull another piece from the bin and have your CNC wood router plop out another one.

I wouldn't debate that because it's true. Most thing these days are made poorly/cheaply.

That's why my home is filled with antiques and pre-war furniture. I've had some of it re-upholstered, but I do have an original La-Z-Boy from the 1930s. Made of solid wood and steel, still has the original springs and fabric.

There was a shared idea that you would buy something like a dinner table for your family, and that would be it. You'd have it until you died.

But because (((they))) have driven consumerism to unseen levels, everyone thinks they need to buy """NEW""" shit every 5 years. Women are brainwashed into feeling ashamed of their homes because some literal faggot in Chatelaine or Redbook tells them their furniture is "outdated" or "ugly".

Companies like IKEA serve a few purposes, some legitimate. My first furniture for my student apartment was a mix of hand-me-down solid wood stuff, and some cheap IKEA particleboard shit. IKEA stuff looks nice when it's new, but doesn't wear well/last long.

I still have the same dining table my father's friend gave me 7 years ago for university. It was his aunt's, who bought it in the 1950s.

Still looks amazing, and nicer than most anything they make today.

If you're implying that Volvo was attempting to emulate a specific LA hipster trend (effectively, the nu-male desire to furnish a home with 1960's Austin Powers-tier furniture) - then you may be correct. More likely, though, they were trying to add some substance to their sales brochure by telling cuck-stomers that their interior features "REAL WOOD".

And for the record, classic Scandi furniture is tacky as fuck. I've met one client who had this shit in their house, and he was a faggot. We're talking about personal preference/taste at this point in time, which isn't really the root discussion anyhow.

If I were alive in 1955 and some Swede was asking me to buy his warped particle board and tube steel banquet chairs, I'd tell him to fuck himself. Same as today. The fact that there's been a resurgence of this style only proves the age-old adage that history is cyclical. It is, that's not up for debate. Fashion follows the same path. So does interior design and architecture. So does food, for that matter.

That is a fake Aalto stool stolen by IKEA, real ones are Finnish and made by Artek.

They are 100% real wood and it was kinda an industry secret how they made them for a long time. They make small cuts to the solid wood and then boil it in glue or something and then bend it carefully.
Design was made in the 1920s by a Finnish architect Alvar Aalto and Finnish technology university is named after him.

IKEA just stole the design and made them out of plywood for 9.99 a piece, real one is 150-200 dollars. It has been copied a few times before, the original designer A. Aalto just said that if you think your's is a fake, throw it into a wall and see if it breaks. Real one can take over 1000kg of weight because the bent wood constriction, IKEA one doesn't hold even a grown man.

I like this. Could have been red or blue or something. Even almost black. And still been wood. But it's nice

Maxima is nice. I thought the dodge dart would be nicer. Chevy really does look plasticky all the time. Subaru too complicated. BMW boring and haughty. Mercedes just killing it with new e class

When they were owned by Mercedes Benz of all companies. Who raped Chrysler until all that was left was a corpse.

So the real question you should be asking is why Germans are so shit at interiors.

I just test drove by every car in this price range. The Mazda infotainment system sucks and the controls are awful. No Android auto or apple car play.

Subaru's new global platform interiors (Impreza, outback) were, by far, the most impressive and functional. Pic related

Neither did the engineers that designed it because their cars interior are clearly aimed at people who don't drive.

With different engine/lots of options you do go over 40k. But the interior is the same.
