Collage Edition
Previous thread: >>17637072
I've updated the collage with the two E60s and the E46, the E39 M5 couldn't fit without cutting off half the car.
Please post another picture because I want to include it.
first for NA inline 6
second for NA inline 6
third for turbo inline 6

heres the listing

the only thing stopping me is how much more itll drain from my wallet each week. I already go through about 35L a week in my w124 which only has a 2.2L 4 banger. kinda scurred how much a 5L V12 will drink
>>17653506
is that your car? I'll add it to the picture

Love the colour, shame about the stance
blue E60 anon, what happened?
>>>17651485
Good enough for the collage?
>>17655002
How about now
>>17655007
>007
Tomorrow Never Dies E38 confirmed
Also get rid of those wheels, disgusting
>>17652342
Does it have to be an M to be included in the picture?
>>17654977
That is a great color, looks stunning on every car they put it on. It's probably airbagged so I don't care about how low it is, whatever floats your boat even if it is looking like you've got a family of obese bears in your car, those wheels though... ugh.
>>17655778
I think only 2 of those are M cars, so no.
Should I buy e60 or e82?
>>17655115
The wheels came with the car and have brand new Michelins on.
I also kinda liked them, but I have shit taste and know nothing about style. Got any suggestions for better wheels? Maybe some Alpina 19 spoke replicas?
I am looking for some deepdish Remotec or Borbet Type A's for my E32 750 though, I like the way they look.
>own a merc
>want to buy something cheap I can trash around and have fun with and to work on and mod
>"time for e30 I guess"
>look up prices
>cry
>e36 is cheaper
>hate the interior
>look up 3rd gen prelude
Seems like a fun little car
should I try to get an e30 or just go for a prelude
>>17655840
Or just try to get used to the E36 interior
>>17655840
If you don't like the E36 interior look at at E36 compacts. I drive an E30 and the first time I sat in an E36 compact I thought "wow this is like a more refined E30".
I really liked it
>>17655862
>>17655870
its not only the interior
I hate the exterior and how much bigger it is than the e30
I just want something small and nimble
miatas are too expensive here
>>17655901
>I just want something small and nimble
what did I say
>>17655910
no man I dont like e36
I would rather get a 2 door than the compact if I went that road because the compact looks retarded
>>17655922
okay well i bought my E30 for $2300 in April. I've had to put about another 2k into it though.
Just keep looking
Should I get the MPSSK for my 440i?
>>17654989
Cruising at 55mph on wet, freshly paved interstate and all of a sudden the car started slipping to the right even though I was going straight. Ended up doing a complete circle around the car next to me before spinning once more off into the ditch.
Surprisingly there wasn't that much damage for impacting at 40+mph; the car didn't even stall. Put a small hole in the front bumper, cracked the paint on the bumper, took out a fog light casing as well as a fender light, blew out a control arm bushing, some dings on the driver side, and made the oil pan hang down. I figured now I have an excuse to get an M bumper lol. However, there's this pretty bad vibration at 70+ and I'm not sure what's causing it.
I was pretty lucky where I landed too because that was the only pocket without thick trees along the entire road.
>>17656069
>hydroplaning in 2017
get some tires that aren't shit then drive off a cliff
>>17656069
once its back on the road join the UNIROYAL RAINSPORT 3 master race.
>mine didn't get into the collage
Anyone here have experience with F30s?
I was thinking of getting an F30 335i as a daily.
>>17656069
sounds like your tires are either bald or shitty
>>17655838
M Pars or Throwing Stars is a must have on the E38
>>17656069
the vibration probably means one of your rims or tyres is fucked
>>17657107
Pic related are M Pars I reckon? I think Throwing Stars came with the E31, I think.
I am really liking the look of those in the pic not a fan of the blacked out mask though.
>>17656269
>>17656984
Yeah they were pretty shitty. As you may have noticed, the car has some shitty stock rims which I planned to replace. Since I'll need new tires too I thought why not burn them down before junking them but I didn't expect to hydroplane so soon
Meh
>>17656786
post another picture, i know i missed some
>>17657142
>>17657107
My mechanic is selling an E38 740il with M Pars but a trashed interior for 2k. It has like 110k miles.
>>17657451
i was >>17645787 from last thread. If that pic won't work, i'll find another
>>17657459
Forgot to ask, should I go for it? It runs and drives, the seats are just bad and it needs a window regulator too
>>17657476
I couldn't fit that picture, do you have another one that isn't as long?
>>17657481
>seats are just bad
meh unless you have a long commute
>window regulator
easy fix
i prefer 3ers but go for it if thats what you like (and have money for occasional repairs)
>>17657481
this one should be workable, i dunno how you want to cot it. Sadly, these are the winter tires and rims...
>>17657509
I own the E30 in the collage, it would be a second car since I really like E38s
I can probably get it for less. I think I'll see if I can go for it
>>17657511
That should work, I can just have some border if I need to.
>>17652342
Any opinions on getting this 318ti?
£650 and 85k miles
>>17657923
that looks pretty nice. is it manual?
I don't know much about euro pricing but in america that would be a steal.
the paint looks like it's in great condition and thats a good sign on red paint

I really like that. The only thing I can say is the audio cuts are a little choppy, but that's understandable.
I like that shot of it next to the E30

>>17658563
O kinda regret it now. It doesn't match the car
>>17658563

Was going to make a thread but figured this would be a better place to get an answer. Is this worth checking out?
>>17658713
yeah find an M50 or even maybe S50 in a junkyard for cheap and swap it in

Could i just get the head off another e36 motor and throw it in, assuming theres no piston damage? not mechanically familiar with bimmers but damn they gorgeous
>>17658725
>>17658713
For example, I just found this really nice looking one https://tampa.craigslist.org/hil/cto/d/1996-s50-bmw-318ti/6248738096.html
>>17658732
yeah i'm surprised by how many people have contributed. maybe i'll add your car in greyscale
>>17658743
yeah if you can find another M44 (any 318i(s)), but since it's had the head off you might want to see if that block is messed up at all from just sitting open like that
>>17658732
how is the Z3? Slow?
>>17658758
that's the first thing im checking if i go see this thing. I really like the purple pain and the fact that its a hatch, plus a 5spd. Would a head replacement be something i can do fairly easily on these? I feel like european cars tend to need more specialty tools but again ive never owned one lol
>>17658776
i'm not an M44 specialist or anything but they aren't crazy complicated engines. lots of people swap the heads onto M42s in E30s so I don't think its that complex
>>17658774
fucking slow and was a sketchy tramlining nightmare on rough roads.
beautiful car though. Miss looking at it and it's massive hood
Do you riek mah caaarrr?

Should i get an e34 as a first car? Im currently debating whether i should sell my pc to gather the money for it. There are very decent ones for 850-1500€. Im just looking a car to love and enjoy which isnt too expensive

>>17660149
Depends on the model. The M20 and M50 engines are nigh indestructible with very few if any major things to worry about.
M20 is belt driven and M50 has shit stock waterpump and coolant hoses. Those two aside, there's nothing.
18in, 19in, or 20in wheels on an E60? Thinking about some VMR V710s
Should I get an E36 or an E46 as my 2nd car/1st manual?
Deciding factors are reliability/post of parts, though I'd do all the work myself.
>>17653407
If that is original paint it is substantially underpriced. That would be a 25000 Euro car in Germany.
Moved some cars around yesterday, took a couple pictures. My two factory m-sports.
>>17658152
Thanks for the reply, and yeah manual. just went and got some more pics and while the outside is good, seems like there might be some rust. I guess that's expected for a 20 year old car though. I don't really plan on it being a long term thing, looks nice, cheap and wanted to try and fix it up myself a bit.

the M badge is not factory though is it

>clock in at 1:59:47pm

>>17662774
Turns out the nail came from my neighbor's roofers. Is there any way I can prove it was them and have them pay for it? I just walked out in front and noticed more nails on the ground
>>17662713
I think the e30's came with the M badge from factory if they were factory mtechnic equipped. The 535's I am unsure if the dealer (Japan Corp) put them on or if it was an option on mtechnic equipped e34's.

Hey guys I'm the collage anon, I'm out of town until Wednesday, so I won't be able to update it.
I'll be saving all the images and adding them when I get home.
>>17663327
This is correct, but there were no M-Technic sold in America afaik.

What a fucking waste of money, guys with turbo cars are fine with the stock one.
>>17664382
His car is very much not stock, idiot.
Eurofag here, thinking of swapping a 5.0 into an e30 shell. What do americans think of 5.0 stang engines? and how easy do they make power?
Also looking at other alternatives but I think LS1s are really expensive in europe.

this

This goes for E46 too.
>>17664655
They are popular because they are cheap and everywhere, I don't think thats the case in Europe tho idk
>>17662705
what trim E90?
>>17664900
Yeah true, I'll have to ask some junkyards or some shit around me if they have any. I know theres a few on ebay.
>>17662196
>>17662713
Yeah the M badge isn't factory doesn't matter if it's m sport or whatever but back then they didn't put the m badge on any car but the M cars unlike what they do today, you might even get some hate from the hardcore bmw guys
>>17665105
the m badge is factory though. definitely was an option
My E36 M3 has been running very warm lately.
214-225F when measured through OBD2 scanner, gauge doesn't move from middle.
Fans are working, what should I check? Fan clutch (maybe not spinning fast enough)? Lowest it gets is 208F on the highway.
I'm half tempted to just redo the cooling system (rad/water pump done by PO in 2014, no leaks, I'd guess hoses too since they still feel soft) and half tempted to start at least with a cooling system flush and thermostat ($15)/thermostat housing ($12) and expansion tank ($30, Behr or Rein)

Guys I've been doing some HPI checks on bimmers I want to buy and one had it's place changed in 2015. When I check it's hpi it shows only information on the plate that was used till 2015 but when I try to check the new plate it comes off as blank. How come?
getting e39 528i soon. I know its not as great as a 540 or M5 but this specific model has a lot of sentimental value. Is it worth adding a short shift kit? And is there really anything worth doing to a 528? already has the Msport package so its not like I need to upgrade suspension at all.
>>17668699
SSKs are dumb. Just take good care of it and enjoy.
>>17668743
alright, just heard the throw in the manual e39 is oddly long. As for taking care of it, anybody have recommendations for good detailing products and tools? been searching for advice on that and its a bit overwhelming

nice, I went with a rack off a 2002 Z3 2.8i on >>17665897 it feels great but I have to center it properly (can't get a alignment), how did you center your rack?
so far what i've done
>center steering wheel with wheels straight, lock steering wheel using ignition lock
>remove wheels
>slip tierod boots off
>measure from end of rack housing to rubber ring on inner tierods
>left = 14cm right = 13cm (so its off by .5cm on one side)
what's the next step? disconnect coupling, move rack so its equal on both sides (13.5cm) and put it back on? can that coupling come off easily without having to drop the rack or control arm?
what's the comfiest, most reliable BMW sold in north america that i can buy used?

If you have two E30s and you mash them together really hard, do you get an E60?
So for less than 15k USD what models and years should I be looking at if I want something low maintenance that I won't have to worry about failing on me?
>>17670273
Look into an E90 3-series, non-turbo (328i or 325i from 2007-2011). These are usually cheaper than $15k so you can save some for maintenance/repairs.

>>17672353
They're the some of the last reliable and lightweight sedans that bmw has made. 3.4k is not heavy for a four door sedan, considering everything made today is north of 4k lbs. The NA straight six in the 528/530 is an overall excellent engine, bulletproof and second in power output only to the S54 as far as I6's go yet is far more reliable.
Ugly? I get lots of compliments, they are pretty beautiful in my opinion also the interiors are still classic bmw and not that all-plastic giant ipad type bullshit like the more recent merc/bmw's have.
fa/hg/ot from honda gen here. nice to see other brands having their own general threads. i love e30s and e39s.
Is this pic gucci for the collage? Also first for oil pan gasket leak
>>17673859
Hondas are cool too, some of my fondest driving memories were in my cousin's s2000. My mom also drives a honda going on 300k miles, I'm amazed how trouble-free it is those cars go forever.

Okay guys thanks lots, ill be sure to report here in a couple of months
Already have many things planned what to do with it and i cant wait to start
I don't know much about BMWs, but why do people exalt the older M3s but shit all over the new one? Do they just not hold up like the past models?
>>17677563
The new one has no idea what it is, it's like it took the place of the m5 or something. It has no identity and isn't as thrilling to drive as the m2 or the m4 or the old m3.
Not to mention the old M3 was pushing 330 horsepower on a naturally aspirated I6, that is an amazing engine although the car itself is a pain in the ass maintenance-wise.
>>17677563
depends on what m3 they own. If it's an E46 cabriolet then you can guarantee its some fat balding chav whos got it on the cheap because it's on deaths door and has been to the moon and back, and passes the time by posting "not a real m3 lol" on e92 groups.
>>17662370
Buy it and Ill buy the mudflap off you, than the car will be that much cheaper for you. Think of it as a mail in rebate
how much km is too much on a used e46
like I know if u take care of cars theyre better but even then theres a point where its just not worth fixing
is 190 k km too much?
>>17677570
>>17677853
So, if I had the chance to get a 2010 M3, you would say the older ones are definitely better?
>>17680760
>is 190 k km too much?
Not at all. If it's in good shape go for it.
Just picked up a used f30 320i manual that is loaded with options for a daily car that is also fun (3 pedals).
Thinking about doing a stage one down the line, any recommended brand?
>>17681515
The older they are the less reliable and more involving they are to drive. E92/F30 M3 owners are douchey, something I noticed.
Sidenote: Am I close to stock height for a E36 M3? Feels like it, measured out to 13.25" Front 12.75" Rear center of wheel to fender edge.
is this lowered
>>17681515
By new one I meant the current gen not 2010, the e9x m3 still has the m3 identity. The newer one is like an underpowered m5.
M20 or M50 powered E34 as my next DD?
Got sick and tired of trying to tiptoe around fuel costs and such by trying Japanese. 2 broken Nissans and one Toyota later, I realized that there is no substitute for the best.
here's a quick one of mine
>>17683620
M50 is better in every way. Just change the water pump once and you'll be good to go
e46 or e87 as my first car?
both are diesel (320d and 120d)
or neither?
>>17683754
I've owned quite a few M50 powered cars myself during the years, but somehow I've amassed a pile of parts for the M20 despite only having like one M20 powered car.
Yeah, I'll just look for a nice 520 or 525 E34 and use that as my daily, fuck everything else.
>>17683783
Lol I'm the opposite. I have a bunch of E36 and M50 parts despite only owning E30s
looking for an e46 found a good one but im only not considering cuz it has some old wheel pic related
am I retarded for letting this turn me off
>>17683792
Yes you are
>>17683783
>>17683620
I prefer an M20 to an M50 but I wouldn't want an M20 powered 5 series. An M20 powered E30 is slow enough, I can't imagine how slow a 5 series would be, since it's several hundred pounds heavier.
Sure an M50 doesn't make much more power than an M20, but it is an increase.
>>17683839
It's slow as shit and overworked to hell and back.
In BMWs defense, there wasn't much esle to offer at the time for a gap between the 1.8 litre 4 pot M40 and the 3 litre M30
What front and rear bumper is best for an e34? Want an aftermarket one but everything i see is super ricey and shitty.
>>17674669
Honestly id go with ksport or bc racing coilovers if thats the way you want to. Otherwise id say h&r springs with bilstein shocks.
>>17682346
>E92/F30 M3 owners are douchey
Harsh man. Although slightly less so coming from a USDM e36 owner.
are there any websites / wikis about BMW models and their common issues?
I am thinking about buying a 325i but I am not sure if I should go for a E30 or a E36.
Location is Germany
>>17685447
I can list you some issues with both the E30 and E36
>E30
Rust
M20 engine cam oiler tube might get blocked, causing cam to starve from oil and wear out extremely fast
Timing belts
Fan viscous coupling unit has a tendency to explode if not replaced in time
Oil filter housing gasket
>E36
Rust
Rotting coolant hoses
Water pump
Radiator hose necks
Yet again, fan coupling unit exploding
Crank position sensor
Coil packs giving out due to age
Oil filter housing gasket
Those are the most prominent
>>17685499
thanks, gladly noted, would you prefer the E30 over the E36 or visa versa for DDing it?
>>17685545
Honestly, no. The E36 is the successor to the E36 and improved in just about every single way possible.
Only thing E30 has going on is lighter weight and looks which are subjective. Maybe also simplicity because the E30 has next to fuck-all going on in terms of electronics.
Then again, I've been looking for an E30 as my DD because I prefer the looks.
What is your opinion of F30s, /o/?
>>17653312

>>17652342

Nice man, I like the black engine cover. I almost want to order one for mine.
335i eh? I know those are pretty fun but they take a bit more wrenching to keep em going yeah?

>>17652342
>I'm not going to be autistic like /tg/ and require proof unless it's something that I doubt anyone on /o/ has
Hello /bmwg/
/tg/ & /hg/ collages require proof because the original /hg/ collage did not require it. In the long run, trolls were subtly spamming it with CL pics.
It's done
>>17684606
All of them don't acknowledge my car, so its sour grapes.
Doesn't help the newer M cars attract badgewhores until they get cheaper used and only people brave/stupid/poor enough to buy a 10-20 year old German Sports Car pick them up.
>>17685499
Forgot for E36:
>rust (rear strut tower sides, rockers, front fenders)
>strut tower caps can crack when the PO never changes clunking rear shock mounts
>rear trailing arm bushing and trailing arm pocket
>rear subframe if not a M3 can tear out
>literally everything in the car with rubber/plastic (cooling system including rad/fan/water pump, door cards, guibo, motor/trans mounts, bushings and joints, etc)
>shifter detents
>wood trim warps and cracks/delaminates
>broken seat gear will mean you can't lean the seat back
>valve cover gaskets
>harder to find if not impossible with a LSD
>oil pump nut walking off at high rpms for 6 cylinder models
>trunk harness can fray apart
>cabin air filter is impossible to get to and 90% of the time 20+ years old
get the e30 unless its a mint 328i

what's exactly wrong with that?

Sedans are not boring

temporary i bet, they go to some extreme lengths to hide the final design on these test cars.
>>17655835
82 is still one of the best BMWs ever made. Love mine and with a tune it competes with a modern M2 so it's doesn't feel old Or anything.
e46 320d solid enough for a first car? I live in Albania so parts are cheaper here but I dont want to go fix it every other week.
How much is this worth?
323i, manual with 200,000KM. No rust.
>>17657923
>Buying one of the ugliest old bmws to ever exist
Why?
>>17689576
Because they're fun?
>>17689435
>with a tune it competes with a modern M2
lul delusion. I mean it's definitely quick and probably comparable in highway pulls until triple digit speeds but the moment some turns come in you'll be left in the dust.
>>17689546
Yes it is
>>17689556
Is that an E21? I can't fucking tell if it's an E21 or an E30, and I own an E30.
>>17690885
E30, E21 had blinkers/turn signals that curved around the edges of the front.
I got home yesterday, I'm updating the collage now.
>>17688814
I'll think about it if it gets big.
>>17690933
Here's a cute E32 for you.
>>17690899
Then you could probably fetch at least 4k with that, if not more
>>17690933
Props to you for keeping that updated man
Updated for the most part, if there are any I missed, just let me know. It's becoming a huge file
>>17690998
It's too long I can't fit it :^(
Do you have a picture with a little more room above or below?
>>17691103
Thanks, I want to keep this thread alive so I want to keep it updated.
Which one would cause me less problems e46 320d or e90 320d
both got pretty high km a little less than 200k km so I want the most reliable
or should I get a shoe (e87)
>>17691180
can you include mine
Its not longer with us and would be a good memorial

looking at a couple
how does this one look from the images(ofc ill have to go check it in person or send someone to)? http://imgur.com/a/M3cpF
it has got 185k km for 3300 euro first price which means i can prob lower it to 3000

I'll add it in like black and white or something
If it was a picture of the front of put Xs over the headlights
>>17691632
Looks clean anon, I'm thinking the owner has taken good care of it. Like the other guy said go see it in person and test drive it, if everything is fine then €3,000 is a good deal
Looking for an E30, do you guys have any thoughts on the 318 vs the 325?
>>17691180
wow. still no e21?
I'm that guy that has an e21 and some other BMWs from old thread btw.
Also why didn't you include the pic of my e23? I posted it on the last thread.
>>17692380
M10 318i is garbage unless you really like simplicity
M42 318i is awesome, my uncle would autox his 318i and his 325is and he said that the 318i was noticeably lighter and he got faster times
Anyone done any steering rack swaps on an E30/E36?
I'm thinking about getting a 330i rack for my E30 and maybe even running it de-powered. The E46 330i rack runs about $250
Whats a fair price on a 2015 m235i derive with 29k miles? I know I should get the rwd version but I live in a snowy area and mainly plan on going in a straight line.
>>17693917
No but I I'm looking to do the same thing.
A friend of mine is parting out an E36 323i and the steering rack looks like it's in good shape.
If I ran it depowered would it be that hard? I already have a really small steering wheel.
>>17693956
From what I've been reading all the E30/E36/E46/Z3 racks all fit into each other some takes more work than others.
most common and simple on is e36 into an e30.
running depowered is no issue you just have to find a way to block off the fluid to keep it in the rack. I know garagistic sells a block off plate for E30 specific racks, and I'm sure someone on forums has a how to for E36 ones. I think a normal way of blocking it off is rerouting the hoses into each other.

Jesus nobody told me one of the manifold studs on the M20 is longer than the rest
I couldn't figure out why it wouldn't lift out
>>17694190
ah the bitch tube
when you go to reinstall it put some (2-3) small zip ties around the spring to help compress it as you install it.
>>17694206
I love how online communities for specific cars have their own inside jokes over shit only an enthusiast owner would know about.
>>17694206
I find if you press and rotate the oil drip tube into the block, it has enough friction to stop it popping out.
Fuck that thing is a cunt though when you think you've put your intake manifold on and then you realize that you didn't install that pipe.
CUNT

Steering wheel is on the wrong side. Color looks good, no rust, if the interior is all right you'd be looking at over $5k.

>It's too long I can't fit it
She ain't even a Lang.
Is this pic better or worse? I am kinda wasted right now so I have no idea what is a good picture anymore.
If anyone has sad pictures I think I'll include them in black and white. I just found this picture of my first E30 again and I want to include it.
I updated it again since I have nothing to do.
I have to save it as jpg now since the pngs are too big.

>>17696535
But there's nothing sad here?
New rims should be here in about 10 days
So excited. I can finally get rid of those grandma wheels I have now
Dad passed down to me his 1986 Mercedes SL560 with 76k miles on it.
Is it worth weekend driving and upkeeping or should I sell it and get something different (or newer)?
>>17698252
If you want something practical, ditch it for a honda civic or similar. Otherwise it could be a fun/unique car. Since it's old it may need repairs.
>>17697769
Whoops I'll fix it
