I actually had the opportunity to fly a 172 when I was in highschool. The only thing I wasn't allowed to do was take off or land, but as soon as we left the ground I was given full control.
Got to cruise around the coast and loop the island, then bring her down within 20ft of the airstrip before the pilot let her down. Was amazing and for a while I was really obsessed over becoming a military pilot, but I let that dream die.

except I do. Just got my commercial license about 3 weeks ago. Currently working on my CFI

Also to answer your question a common excuse is the price. To get my private, IFR, Multi (IFR, CPL) and single engine commercial ratings I'm in it about 60 grand. Will be worth it in the long run but I am buried in debt at the moment :/
>>
>>17641077

Not in single pistons. You can still glide to safety if the engine fails. It's the turbines that drop like a rock,
>>
I guess more so on the cost. Maybe just maybe if if you get a good retirement plan going and good benefits. Then maybe but say me at 20. How the fuck am i supposed to afford or be able to fly and get my own plane, and pay for the pilots license. Correct me if i am wrong but it really just doesn't seem feasible in this economy. Maybe it was 2000 again it could be but i just don't see it.

Is it true biplanes can have shorter wingspans/wing area for a single wing? You know what I mean. Because you have two of them you can add them together for one big lifteroony.

I want ultrashort lift wings.

wew.
>>
>>17641109
Turbojets still glide decently. Not as good of a glide ratio as a small single engine aircraft. Also the vast majority of turbojet aircraft are twin so the likelihood of losing both engines simultaneously is slim.

also, if you are serious about flying and want to do it for a living, look into ATP. ATP is a school that will get you from zero hours to 1500 and help you land a job in the regional airlines. Takes about a year and a half to end up there and costs a shit ton of money. The main benefit of ATP is the fact that they have financing options. Wellsfargo and Fannie-May have a relationship with ATP and offer loans to students who might not have the best credit.

To anybody who wants to fly but can't figure out how to swing it I strongly recommend looking up ATP. If you are concerned about money and are serious about flying give them a call. I was able to get a private loan and go at my own pace but ATP is a great option.
>>

I'd absolutely love to take flying lessons, but I live in one of the most expensive cities in the world relative to average income. I'm just lucky enough to be splitting rent illegally with others in our flat.

A friend of mine is getting his license atm, he took me around once

>can only fly alone (without passengers) when you don't have a trainers-license

>have to drive 45min to the airfield
>have to be in a club and "rent" one of the available planes

I'd really like to get that license but for that money I can rent a wrx and go around a gravel-track in a rally school. Or get a official racing license for tarmac.

Nah not so much full time flyer to make it my job. But more so on a hobby like some guys who own their own little fishing boats. But yea i would say for full time flyers its actually in some respects cheaper to get into for a full time job, then say a lot of these degrees people get into. But for me as someone say into just as a hobby i personally couldn't see it unless i get into a good retirement plan. But that's just me. Personally cost wise i'd rather own a fishing boat than a plane for a side hobby. Which is a shame cause i think in the economy of the 80s, 90s , and even early 2000s up to 2005 it was viable. I just don't see like that unless we hit a booms times or some shit.
>>
because becoming a pilot and owning a plane is stupid fucking expensive. dad became private pilot (IFR/night rated) and it was more economical to get a big American SUV and drive that every day, not to mention less stressful.

>amazing views
Sometimes.
>180 Knots
Only if you have a tailwind, lol. This time the joke is serious.

Pilot training is expensive. There are a lot of people in between you and an airplane, each with their hand out and all of them want to know how well you can fly and how much money you have before letting you up in the sky.

To get in a car and drive? Not so many people with their hand out.
>>

And if you want to fly professionally? This is what you have to look forward to:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwKuSMVCliQ
>>
>>17641115
Technically yes, but the aerodynamic sacrifices from two wings (since it's technically more drag in addition to more lift) isn't worth it with how the tech has advanced, otherwise biplanes would still be the standard.
>>
My understanding is that anyone who truly wants to get their PPL in the US can do it easily, it just takes some serious budgeting depending on your level of income but it certainly can be done without living in a cave. Once you get your license, there are flying clubs that often operate on fractional use of the aircraft they have, so everyone just shares and pays a fraction of the upkeep/maintenance costs.

Plus, if you're making more than the average /o/tard, I've seen mid-way-to-overhaul cessnas go for ~$30-40k

Sure there are expensive facets, but for the dedicated there are absolutely ways to save money.

Personally I'm thinking of getting glider certs and calling it a day at that. drifting through thermals and wind currents above some valleys or mountain ranges all while running completely silent sounds like the most rewarding and visceral flying experience possible, short of flying a jet fighter.

Which is rarer than a modern jet engine cutting out mid-flight, even if the structure we're talking about is a 60's built 172. If that happens, the pilot was knowingly cutting corners with his mechanic or willfully neglecting maintenance altogether.

Meanwhile, taking corners on a track at 50mph is exhilarating as all hell.

Horizontally opposed piston engines are wayyyy more popular. Almost every small plane without a turboprop is a Lycoming or Continental.

That being said, I would love to see a newer attempt at a turboshaft production car. I always thought turboshaft to generator would be cool and then drive the wheels with electric motors. Turboshafts are super reliable, will run on all sorts of fuel, and are compact.

The redundancy with aircrafts is pretty crazy too. Don't commercial jets normally have 3x hydraulics for everything? And fucking magnetos in piston engines. But turbines are fairly simple as long as the couple main parts are in good order.

There are strict rules with commercial flights where they are rated on how far they are allowed to be from an airport with an engine out. Years ago a 2-engine jet would never be allowed to fly across open oceans full of passengers so they used 3 and 4 engine aircraft like the 747. But now twin engine jets are getting better ratings because they are so reliable.

180HP @ 2700 RPM is 350 ft. Lbs of torque at 2700 RPM. The engine most definitely takes advantage of it... Oh, and run 4-digit EGT's continuously for hours and hours at low RPM, high load, in an aircooled engine with unleaded gas and tell me what your exhaust valves look like.

You are referring to dual mags. Except the engine can't develop rated power on only 1. It is necessary.

literally everything you said is wrong and stupid... Even the fuel efficiency thing... That's an aerodynamic issue not a thermodynamic one... The engine itself is very efficient for the weight and power.

The most economical engines for small planes are diesel engines.

I ran some figures on what kind of range a fully loaded Diamond DA42 would be able to do (one person with all remaining available payload converted into fuel holding capacity) and the range was 4833KM.

You could cross the Atlantic with that kind of range. It'd take a long fucking time, but it could be done.

Fun fact: Israel and the UK use a variation of the DA42 as an UAV for reconnaissance.

I'm rated in the DA42NG, it's a neat plane. For some reason it is quite sensitive with fuel imbalance, no more than a 5 gallon difference is acceptable. Also, use of the auxiliary tanks is funky; the engines only feed from the main tanks, so the fuel in the auxiliary tanks must be manually transferred (in increments) in order to be used. Kind of annoying but it gives you something to do on cross country flights.

Sure. Fly it? Not so much. Even if you have the license and the type rating (some planes, a general license isn't enough, you need to be licensed for *that* particular plane) the insurance company may not let you fly solo until you have a minimum number of hours logged flying it. Which means you'll need to hire someone who does have the hours to babysit you until you do.

Turbine engines are expensive to manufacture. Same reason they didn't switch to fuel injection until the 80s, even though they knew how back in the 50s. $$$$ Maybe with 3D printing you can drive the price of a turbine down enough so that it becomes a pleb tier item. Maybe.
>>
>>17652002
Did you see the pic of the homemade one I posted earlier? I think dude said he spent about $600 total on it. Just employ Toyota's QC and machining to make the parts that spin at ridiculous speeds and it will be fine.

If they can get the tolerances down and use materials that don't cost a shit ton, they could easily mass produce turboshaft engines for less than piston engines. Piston engines are incredibly complex compared to many other types of engines. It just seems like they stick with them because they have been putting them in cars for over a century and have gotten pretty good with reliability and efficiency. If rotaries or turbines were the norm since Benz and Ford started making cars, I bet they would be better and cheaper than piston engines in every way.
>>
>>17652065
A turbine will never be as efficient as a piston engine.
>>
>>17652096
that's why all passenger planes since like 1960 has used jets?
>>
>>17641131

Come on man. A lot of engine failures happen right on initial climb out, at less than 1000' agl. You tell me how long you have to make decisions at 1000' above the ground with no engine. I've actually been in that position, and landed the plane safely, and luck has a lot to do with it. Planes can kill you in a number of creative ways.

Also, airline pilot checking in. Have experience doing lots of different flying from instructing to Beech 1900 PIC, to bigger jets.

Also drive a BMW e36 M3/4/5.
>>
>>17652138
Ehh, turbofans are pretty damn efficient. Turbojets aren't at all, they did those on early airliners before switching to high bypass turbofans. Turboprops and turboshafts might be better for aviation because of size, weight, and reliability and not so much efficiency.

>>17652096
You never know. I wonder what the thermal efficiency is on modern turboshafts. Plus I said I think Wenkels specifically could be more efficient if they had the same development and dedication as piston engines over the years.

>>17652211
>>17652138
Also read something interesting, I guess turboshaft/fan/prop engines get much more efficient as they get larger. That's the funny thing about air and fluids, the stuff never scales normally.

Also turbine engines are much more efficient at higher altitudes than pistons. So maybe turbine car for Pike's Peak???
