Decent cars. Very reliable but also very little shit there to break. AC and electric windows is all you get.
What engine? They are bretty gud except the 2.0 FS (sp20 engine)
If its rust free and you dont live in somewhere with snow its a shitbox that will last forever.

I had one as my first car, the jdm model (mazda familia) 1998. Almost bullet proof. No issues as a first car and as a first car for a teen (at the time) it got abused. Ran it up to 171k miles (275k kms) and had no issues whatsoever. Cheap to run, cheap to maintain, all round good little shitbox. Sat outside in the wind and rain and also the heat and sun too. Paint held up nicely. Bought it as an ex rental car so it had a rough life in the beginning but it held up perfectly. I miss mine

Me and my buddy's protege 5 wagon. They are great handling cars. Very fun (assuming u have a 5 speed). These rust bad but mine's been in ga its whole life (red one). The blue one is my buddy's and he wasnt so lucky, his was up north for years before he bought it. The underside is rusty af on his but the major suspension components and important stuff are still in good shape. I'd recommend the protege for sure. Good little shit boxes.
