Can /o/ redpill me on Volvos?

So far all I know about them is that they are consistently known for safety.

How does their reliability compare to other European brands?
What are some notable models throughout the years?
Any Volvo owners on /o/ care to chime in on their car?
What are some good used models to look out for if I want a safe reliable car for under 5k? (don't care too much about performance)

Also Volvo general.

i havent had any issues. i had to redo the suspension at 99k miles but you can say that about any old car.
turbo works great uses no oil
>>
I owned a C30 T5 for about three years and put 25000km on it. In these three years nothing broke on the car not even a ligthbulb. Besides normal maintenance nothing had to be done on the car.
All parts I ordered from my local Volvo dealer were available within two days. E.g. I ordered some new strut bearings because I installed lowering springs and didn't want to use the old ones.

have a 2005 s40 2.4i

car has been stupidly reliable for a premium euro brand. only done basics like brakes, shocks, oil changes, and timing belt.

get a manual one if you can.

only annoyance on my ride is the falling headliner which I ripped out yesterday and going to reupholster tomorrow.

Yeah that's one of the many reasons I got rid of my S60R. 4c a big fat expensive shit although installing 25mm sways with front and rear braces fixed its handling issues up except for the turning radius of course. That and the bonkers fuel consumption is what made me put it out to pasture though. Regret it slightly because the Atacama interior was something else.

The 5-cyl was only good in its T5 or R trim, pre-2007. It was sort of neutered and sanitized after that.

I've heard great things about the 4-cyls, but you lose that a e s t h e t i c engine note that the B52xx engines had and you don't get the symphonic howl of the SI6 in exchange for it, either.

Also, the Saab driver in me gets triggered by the fact that the better Swedish brand is dead and now Volvo is building the 300hp balance-shafted super-4 that you just know the Saab engineers wish GM had let them design for the 9-3.

Wrong, ferd sourced 2.5L on the focus st were the 2.4 blocks bored out to 2.5 and will crack when booster beyound factory specs
Actual t5s are true 2.5L blocks and can take stupid ammounts of boost, polestar made one with 400hp by just putting a huge ass turbo on it and using stronger pistons

I own a 2016 Volvo V40 Kinetic. It has a 2.0L 120BHP engine and automatic transmission. IMHO:

>albeit is is very subjective, the looks of the car are very nice. It is a different look from the normal cars you find in European roads, The trademark central dashboard is a monument to design and good taste.

>the engine is pretty good very everyday use. I seldom drive above 140KM/H and it is more than enough for that use. I have driven with two more people aboard and it can easily do an overtake if needed. The consumption is 5,9L/100KM.

>it is extremely comfortable, the seats are a must, it can easily sit four people (five if they are not too fat in the back).

>in terms of reliability and maintenance, I cannot speak because I've had the car only for two weeks.

How was it neutered and sanitized?

I think it surpasses them because of its lack of meme bullshit.

And for the OP, Volvos are great cars but stick to the old ones. New ones are still good cars but the reliability is nothing special anymore.

Pic is my 940, it has 156k miles, I've owned it for a year and the only thing that broke was the handbrake wire which was very simple (and cheap) to fix.

I have an R-Design. It's faster than 95% of what's on the road around here and was cheap. Haven't had anything break in 2.5 years of ownership.

Also had an S60R and love hated it.

If I were to buy one of those old, boxy, indestructible RWD Volvos should I go for 200 or 700 series one?
>>
>>17599437
Depends really, both are of course good choices.

200-series is very simple, not much that can break but not a lot of luxury either. However, they are older so in the end you might have to do more work than on a newer car.

700-series is still a very robust and simple car, but with slightly more modern features. If you get one of the later models, 88 to 92, you have much better rust protection.

I would say go for the 700 series. Even better, the 900 series, they really are the best when it comes to RWD Volvos. Much easier to find a turbo too.

This is speaking as a swede though, I'm not sure how the situation and availability is in America.

OP here thanks for the info. From what I've heard of the <92 Volvos the transmissions are their weakpoint. Is this true? Can they only handle close to stock power?
>>
>>17599861

Don't buy a Volvo. They're for gaybois and nostalgic boomers.

If he's in the northwest, he will have a very easy time finding any kind of old RWD Volvo. There's entire shops that are specialized in old Volvo repair around here.

I want to tell you you're wrong, but if people believe this, maybe Volvos will stay cheap...
>>
>>17599861
First thing to go is the clutch, you will 100% need an upgraded clutch if going for more power (the pressure plate is too weak). Older transmissions like m46/m47 are not good for much more than stock power. M90 is the trans you want for more power, it was standard on the 940 from mid 94 and on. That's why late 940s are the best for tuning.
>>
>>17601578
I want an automatic tho
>>
>>17601598
I know very little about those, but I don't expect you can get much more power out of them. 30 year old slushbox isn't really the best for tuning.
>>
>>17589557
No, always wanted one but I've heard they're maintenance nightmares, since the only thing Volvo about them is the engine, the rest is French junk
There's actually one for sale near me for $2200
