Looks alright, other than being an auto and being a dealer car even though it's listed privately.

Make sure the paint is in good nick and there's no rust anywhere because Mazdas of that era had thin paint and rust easily if exposed to salt/sand.

I saw a little Mazda 626 with a for sale sign in its window today, at least 2005 probably newer, $2800.
Of course I have no way of telling if there was anything wrong with it but it looked good and I thought to myself "that's a good car for $2800".

The Toyota is the obvious sensible choice. Mazda if you want something not quite as boring and live somewhere without road salt.

The sensible choice would be the 1.4 or 1.33L Auris, but the 1.8 150 bhp lump is anything but sensible. The Golf V with either the 1.4L or 1.6L petrol are much more sensible than the fast af Auris.
THe only issues with Toyota is that, despite being reliable af, parts are also expensive af.
