thing is, here in the UK the standard of driving is very high; the driving test is difficult and has a very high failure rate (in my area, the pass rate is 30%). The roads are narrow and rarely straight, and full of bumps and potholes. Because towns and cities are so densely packed and sprawl lie, the roads are twisty and sprawl-like as well. This means that in order to actually drive in the UK, you need to be a very good driver that understands the rules of the road. So this complex looking roundabout system is actually no problem at all.

In murrica all your roads are straight and you can be a 70IQ subhuman ape and still drive.

Traffic circles are cool when there's no traffic but if the road is busy, you end up waiting many times longer than if it'd been a redlight. They're also complete garbage for any combination vehicle as they usually end up needing to take up every lane, which only confuses and endangers every one
>>
>>17583322
Isn't it a waste of time and resources to make everything more complicated than needed?

We make do with what we have.
Few of the roads in the uk were created with motor vehicles in mind.
Many of the routes were formed hundreds, if not thousands of years ago. There are roads in use now that have Roman roads as the foundation.
The result is a mixiture of highly efficient modern multilane highways, narrow twisty county lanes and near impossible to navigate city centres.

What for? All they do is increase sprawl and traffic. It now takes -longer- to get into Houston on the Katy Fwy than it did -before- the massive expansion, because now even more people move into the area and attempt commuting by car. Los Angeles has already given up on ever bigger highways and funnels its infrastructure fund into light rail expansion now. It's impossible to simply scale up a city by the same traffic principles as a small town. Everyone driving works for small towns, not for cities.

Roundabouts, even confusing ones are safer than intersections, which is why theyre growing even in the USA

Don't see the problem from a driver's point of view anyway, ZOOMing through a wide roundabout is fun as fuck, and tricky double mini roundabouts are kinda fun too like puzzles

Traffic lights make driving fucking boring, just start and stop when you're told - straight lines only. When I went to America the city roads were so boring and miserable its understandable why self driving cars will flourish there, because driving there is so braindead to begin with. before you get triggered, I'm sure there are endless twisties for fun out in the rural areas.

This stoplight used to exist in my town until very recently. The green arrow next to it indicates that you're allowed to turn right on red, the blue sign next to that says that you're only allowed to turn right on this junction.
The problem was that because of some wierd regulations, it had to be a stoplight, not just a stopsign and because of how the junction worked it wasn't allowed to turn green, it was permanently red.

This stoplight stood there for 29 years
>>
>>17586658
A simple yield sign wouldn't suffice?
>>
>>17586664
Techincally yes. But because of our traffic code, if one road on a junction has a stoplight, all other roads on it have to have one aswell. It's just retarded

This is the junction in question. It's pretty busy so it would make sense why there would be stoplights there. The red dot is where the stoplight was. As you can see it's a pretty small road so a stopsign would suffice but as i said because other roads on this junction have stoplights, this road has to have them aswell. It just shows how retarded bureaucracy can be sometimes.

I have no clue. I guess because it just doesnt need to turn green since you can turn on red and it would cause more traffic jams for nothing if it would turn green, since it would obviously become red on the big road. Who knows.

>What the fuck Germany, this isn't Ordnung!
Quite the contrary. It's just too much of it. And there are so many stupid stories like this that, it hurts.
Another traffic related one is this one: The Oststadtkreisel in Karlsruhe.

Looks like a perfectly fine roundabout, right? Well, it technically isn't a roundabout,it's a junction. That means that left yields to right unlike a roundabout and you cant change lanes in some cases. The city claims that it's not a roundabout because the traffic would be worse then but I don't believe it

In all seriousness:

The reason double and multi-roundabouts work is because they're meant to be confusing. When drivers are in a confusing or uncomfortable situation they tend to pay more attention. It makes sense actually, but it only works in advanced, well-civilized countries where people are generally better drivers. Put this shit anywhere outside Europe and North-America and people will run striaght across because they have no fucking idea what going on in the slightest.
>>
>>17583349

>but if the road is busy, you end up waiting many times longer than if it'd been a redlight.

This is not true. In certain situations where you have 2 traffic slugs coming from different directions no amount of roundabout, stop sign, give way or redlight is going to help.

>Combination vehicles taking up more than one lane are confusing

How so? You see something that is obvious, and you expect the likely result.

It's like those burgers that see a tractor trailer 1000ft away, cut close to the curb, pull back out into the road, throw on its reverse lights and they still squeeze up right behind it wondering what's going on.
>>

Your road layouts are actually well thought out, width is generally large, condition is deliciously smooth.

I agree you had a shit layout to begin with but you guys have worked wonders with it. If you visit many other places in the world you will realise that England has a top notch road network. England is my favorite place in the world for comfy driving, I lived there for 6 years and I have driven everywhere except the most Eastern of Midlands.

I mean we have a roundabout (there are only two) that tractor trailers have to go around backwards and the entrance to the roundabout is blind with two houses on either side. So truck man just lays on his horn and who ever is in his way just has to back up.

>explain this shit, in what world does this make any sense at all?
It is for a country whose drivers are actually required to pass genuine examinations. In america, if you claim your license was denied due to racism, you get issued the license. The level of skill needed to drive in america is miniscule compared to driving on narrow EU roads.

Sure, the USA has some tough examiners. But the applicant simply applies again and gets a new different examiner that is more concerned about having no complaints (especially racism ones). So that applicant passes easily.

America also has sanctuary states that deliberately don't check for citizenship such as washington state. Thus, illegal immigrants go to those states to get a driver license. It's way too easy to get a driver license in the USA.

Its the widest highway in the world I think, honestly its really only bad during traffic hours or when theres a wreck. 85% of the time its moving 65-75 mph. 59, 290 & 45 are all way worse shitty highways you are more likely to get fucked up on.

Personally, I hate traffic circles, but I also understand the logic and reasoning behind them. When your shit gets this complicated for a single intersection, it's time to bite the bullet and put in a traffic light or two.

I don't know specifically where this pants-on-head intersection is, but in most states, you can turn right-on-red as long as you come to a complete stop, and yield. additionally, each of the 3 through-lanes should have their own turns in the traffic light-cycle while there are "right/left turn only" lanes in the larger main roads.

But still this is a pretty retarded intersection, even by MURIKA fag status. Most major cities in MURKA are built with a street grid, because we anent designed around 300 year old goat paths like ewwwwwrope

>Try driving in [...] Rome.
Don't remind me. I wasn't even the driver and I still have nightmares of the three lanes turned into four car lanes and three scooter lanes.

To be honest for their traffic density they're not that bad. The only reason Nebraskans seem like better drivers is because there's no one to crash into when they veer off the road drunk.

not to mention blind curves before bridges so narrow that only one car can cross at a time, random patches of unpaved road, and narrow, blind bridge underpasses where a hand painted sign tells you to stop, honk, and check the convex mirror that is tied to a tree

This is *the* magic roundabout, as in the roundabout in Swindon. The one in Hemel Hempstead is called the Plough Roundabout. Probably because people plough into each other on it but w/e.

I think they're great. the morons can't grasp the idea so i go the "wrong" way round it and skip all the traffic.

Telegraph is an excellently designed road. Traffic never has to touch the brakes in a travelling lane for anything other than a red light. The only thing threatening it are the recent influx of Canadian left lane nazis who think no one but themselves should ever be in the left lane on a surface street and speed and tailgate to try and scare people out of making their turns.
>>
>>17583322
I actually believe that in the US the tests are so easy is that more people get on the road. More people being allowed to drive = more new cars sold. More cars on the road = more focus on road infrastructure

Some people are seeing huge profits from these easy tests and would do whatever it takes for it to remain this way
