Looking at late model (3-4 year old) Cooper S. They are cheap, but maybe for good reason as I hear a lot of bad things related to reliability.
Are they really big hunks of shit?

No, they're MINI hunks of shit
Worse than the horrible unreliable is the repair costs. They're absurdly expensive to fix for no good reason.
Fat ugly meme car.
Would not buy.

It sounds like they're typical British cars.

timing chain and tensioner like to grenade
tons of interior rattles unless your roads are glass
stiff as fuck
supposedly 2013 is the best year but do you really want to chance it? you could get a g37 with a manual or lexus gs with a v8 for similar money

I have one and it's fun as fuck to drive (6 speed manual) Look for post facelift (2011 +) models and figure out which engine you like best.

I drove a john cooper works for a while, not long enough to say anything about reliability but it was definitely fun as fuck to drive, super stiff like that other guy said tho

Worse. They're German. Mini was BMW's FWD arm until they came out with that FWD BMW model.

They're BMW shitboxes built by the British and owned by people who expect their maintenance to be like that of a Honda Civic.
I wouldn't touch one of those ticking time bombs with a 30 foot pole.

My neighbor had a Cooper S and sold it for a Ford Fusion because he couldn't keep it out of the shop. The reliability is not a meme.
