It's not insanely complicated work if you have a basic understanding for engineering matters and are good with numbers. Working with digital models can be fun. Nobody stands at a drawing board anymore. But a lot of it is just cookie cutter office paper work and can become a bit dreary. These are the parts that I have to force myself through, but the technical stuff is quite interesting.

Personally I'm rather happy with it, but this also has to do with my previous career fuckups so I'm glad to have found such comfortable work at all and aren't damned to do badly paid pleb labor for the rest of my life.

I like what Dr. Jordan B. Peterson has to say on the subject. The one job group that employs more people in North America than any other is guess what?

Drivers.

At the exact same time, a large number of the really intelligent people in our society are working on automating driving. Self driving cars already exist, although how good they are is debatable. One way we can expect auto drivers breaking into the mainstream is through trucks. Because they don't have to be perfect, they just have to cause significantly fewer accidents than human drivers. There may be hybrids, too. So for instance you might have a convoy of trucks with a human driver in the first one, and many trucks behind following at set distances just sort of mimicking the first truck. Or you may have individual trucks following set paths with perhaps computers embedded in the road somehow, or on posts alongside it. You could perhaps have standby drivers in each truck who are supposed to intervene if anything goes wrong, something like the way trains work today. The computer mostly drives the train, but the human has to be there anyway.

In any event, as automation begins to replace those jobs, you are going to start to see a lot of unemployment. If ultimately humans aren't even eliminated, let's say that 5 out of 6 jobs are gone, then what jobs are those other 5 guys going to get?

Are they just all supposed to be on welfare?

And what happens in a generation or three after driving automation is standardized? When some rent seeking politicians decide they can make a bit of political hay out of insisting our streets be made safer for muh childruns by banning human driving, what then? Will driving be relegated to speedways and arenas? Like, you can still have your driving for sport, goyim, but you have to conform to our new safety standards now. It's 2057!

And then what the hell happens when /b/ finds a way to fuck with the software and drives a schoolbus into a lake because it's funny?

I work in software consulting. In 2013-2015 I did over 100 nights in hotels a year and over 120 flights a year, 2016 and 2017 have been slower with more work from home. I rarely drive to my customers (distances make flying much more practical), and I get shitbox rental cars from Hertz. Every once in a while they'll throw me a Volvo or BMW or Mercedes but this is rare, it's usually a shitbox sedan or SUV with the base trim. (exception: Boise Idaho Hertz always upgraded me to nicely trimmed SUVs or sedans, almost always from upgrades. I also got a Mustang convertible in Dallas once).

I have 31,000 Hertz points right now which means I could rent a shitbox for about 7 weeks straight. I could also rent something from the Prestige collection for a week (that isn't from Porsche or Mercedes Benz AMG). Over a million Marriott points and about 170,000 miles on United right now (another 170,000 American miles). At least when I go on vacation offsetting the lodging/airfare/rental car costs offsets some of the pain.

I'm in one of these all day, doing it for ten years, actually very enjoyable and high paced enough that you're never bored and time goes fast and the pay is obscene in my country. Kills my neck though.

Working a summer job as a valet driver at a swanky hotel so I get to drive a lot of cool cars. Standing outside all day blows but the base pay is $10/hr and the tips are really good so I can't complain. I just parked an s63 amg and last week we had an aston martin

>>17578363
Do you actually go into student accommodations? There's one place in Nottingham that is home to all chinks and pakis that order tray and trays of water and most of the drivers I work with all have arguments with them because they want it delivering to their door.
>>
>>17578375
we've been told not to go into University or student accommodations for security reasons. usually i arrive and give them a call on mobile to come down to van and fetch. We have loads of people round derby that order shit loads of water and beer and heavy shit that live on top floors. Constant battle between them and management
>>
>>17578393
>Constant battle between them and management

I know the feeling. The place we've been disputing over actually blamed us for breaking their lifts and our manager at the time still tried to get us to go up in the building.

Good to see another local DotCom driver.
>>
>>17578418
lol fuckin hell. sounds about right. Luckily we have a good dotcom manager who listens and understands the drivers. Lucky for us. But fuck it! i break up tomorrow for a week. let em have it! nice talkin to you.

I get paid to drive a vehicle 15mph over the speed limit and run red lights.

I get to do this in anything from Ford 150s, GMC 3500 vans, GMC HD pickups, 40,000lbs engines, 65,000 lbs ladder trucks with 3 axles, and LMTVs.

Feels good rolling an LMTV onto its side getting it stuck and being brought another one and told to keep going.

Honestly one of the chillest jobs I've ever had, listening to music and going from store to house is great.

Tips wise it can be really fucky. One day you're lucky and others you get fucked.

Most I made in tips at the end of the night was $135 with 24 deliveries in 5 hours, was a great night.
>>
>>17580538
Thanks for the info m8. I mean at worst you still made a bit over minimum wage right? Yeah and no doubt it sounds pretty relaxing. I applied yesterday to Pizza Hut and I'm applying for Domino's right now.
>>
>>17580556
Yeah you earn minimum wage and every deliver whether you get a tip or not you get like 2 dollars or something for mileage. Also if you're able to try to take closing shifts, you make probably $60-$70 on average because you're there for 8 hours.
>>
>>17580005

>>
>>17580587
That was my car in the picture I posted originally, so I work for Papa Johns. Usually during downtime you're answering phones/folding boxes/cutting pizzas. If you want to get real adventurous you can help out on making pizzas which is easy as fuck, it's just cup portions and they're labeled.

That's universal for asian people. People around here do it, and it's always an asian name on the label when it comes out with a fuckheavy stack of bottled water and nothing else.
Better than the white people ordering 50 crates of shitty beer. Plastic bottles can stand some fucktard not understanding physics.

Do you lot up north have a covered yard to load your vans in, or is it outside exposed to the elements?
What's your location pay like?
I'm considering moving Up North to get the fuck away from all the scum around here.
>>
>>17583701
>Do you lot up north have a covered yard to load your vans in, or is it outside exposed to the elements?

We've got 3 bays. they're covered under a shelter but 2 bays have 2 vans in them. Mine is only a small store so we have only 14 or so vans.

>What's your location pay like?
No location pay. I'm on £8.01 but it should be going up to something like £8.86 by November 2018

Where abouts are you based?
>>
>>17565329
Oh shit I am working at my first wind site right now, it is pretty fun driving around all of the 2500 diesel trucks on gravel roads.
>>
>>17583867
I'm in Reading. All 7 bays are covered, and we're just going down to 12 vans from 13 because of 'efficiency'.
My manager is a cunt, the store is literally falling the fuck to pieces (Chiller door's been broken for years, freezer door's been broken for over a month now and no sign of repairs), I was PROMISED a full refit of the department two years ago, but the building company took the money and vanished, and I recently got written up for displaying signs of stress.
I hate this area, too. The traffic is awful, the people are awful, the accent is awful, and the roads are falling apart.
You're only on £8.01 as a driver, though?
>>
>>17584001
Damn it sounds like yours really is falling apart.
My managers are cunts. One of them is two faced and the other got one of my colleagues sacked because his attendance was below whatever percentage it was supposed to be and that's because he had n abscess in his mouth and he wasn't able to drive on the medication he had.

Nottingham is alright. Some places are obviously shit like most areas I guess.

Yeah £8.01 as a driver yet people in store are on something like £7.68. Should get more for the amount of shit we have to deal with/responsibilities.
>>
>>17584090
The fuck. I'm on £8.0 in-store, because I'm mired in the depths of shitty traffic.
You're not out of the Totton extra, are you? I've been there; designated shitting store for Download festival, at least for me. Mostly because staff-discounted cold drinks.

>>
>>17584210
You might get location pay then. I've spoken to drivers from London who are on something like £9/£10 due to their higher living cost. Couldn't imagine delivering in London.

How bad is the traffic in Reading? I usually call customers up early before peak traffic hits unless they want it in the actual slot during peak times.

I'm based more around Nottingham city centre.
>>
>>17584274
Something like 50p an hour location pay, according to my payslips.
The traffic is basically at a standstill in rush hour. During the day, it still backs up for ages. Mostly due to the goddamn traffic lights everywhere, and the main routes in and out being choked by bus lanes.

Most of our drops are either right smack in the town centre's mass of tiny roads and identical terraces, or way out in the middle of fuckoff nowhere. Pretty sure it's the only store that has drivers dodging asshole drivers in town, and then going out and having to run right up onto the verges to avoid tractors.
And we have delivery instructions like 'please reverse all the way down the drive we don't have room for you to turn around'.
>>
>>17577271
Well my degree is in mechanical engineering, with an automotive specialty.
>>
>>17565293
ayy, I also detail but I'm only making $13 canadian an hour. it's enough for me and my shitbox though
>>
>>17582814

>>
>>17584688
But is the specialty a postgraduate degree?
Here you can study "Industrial/Mechanical Engineering", with 3 variants:
>Mechanical design and materials
>Fluids and energy
>Plant engineering
There used to be production too but it's a separate career now.
>>
>>17586464
It's just some extra text that shows up on my transcript. My degree just says "Mechanical Engineering." It's not post graduate, I only have a bachelor's.
