The US equivalent is the Forester XT. It has an STI engine with a smaller turbo, and the rest of of the drivetrain from the WRX.
It's actually faster than the WRX from the same years.

Subaru Legacy/Outback
Subaru Forester (bonus points for XT model)
Lexus IS300 Sportcross
Suzuki Aerio (The J20/J24 engine takes to mods very well)
Toyota Matrix (bonus points for XRS)
Pontiac Vibe (bonus points for GT. Build by Toyota, and where the Matrix was American market only, the Pontiac was sold in Japan as a Toyota)
