What kind of gas should I put into my car? if it recommends 87 am i wasting money putting higher octane fuels? i had this convo with my dad the other day and we were going back and forth

also what the fuck kind of gas are they using in japan

If it says 87, run 87. Waste of money to use higher octane.

This.

The reason for higher octane fuels is that some engines are designed to run higher than average compression ratios, where lower octane fuel would combust too soon. Higher octane = higher possible compression without knocking.

Putting higher octane fuel in an engine that is designed for 87 will result in NO performance benefit at all.

alright, no performance benefit, i can dig it
is it better for the overall health of the engine though? don't they put more detergents and put it through more filters and shit than lower octane fuel?
>>
or even better gas mileage?

You can just add the additives if you feel like it. The only thing that kills performance is artificially increasing octane rating with ethanol (it compresses more without combusting, but produces less power)

Before someone mentions ethanol race gas, those engines are running retardedly high compression ratios that are only achievable with ethanol (or are limited in fuel regulations and can't just put 100LL in their cars)
