The Valiant may have been too slow to outrun the truck

But it was slow at dying as well! What modern economy car could slam a rock wall at that speed and still start and move so soon after?

So I get this rattle/grind at highway speeds that stops when I engage the clutch or put it in neutral. Thoughts?
>>
>>17535674
The 1st one is bttf, is the second one the green hornet?
>>
>>17535707
Engage (pedal up) or disengage (pedal down)?

If disengaged, the springs in the clutch disk might be worn out and sloppy. Throwout bearing and pilot bearing, too.

If engaged, fuck, i dunno. Check your U-joints and axle backlash.

I'm sure someone smarter than me will come up with other stuff to check out lol
>>
>>17535707
Can you feel anything through the shifter?
>>

I think so, but it's light.

>>17535759
It's only when the clutch is engaged
>>
>>17535790
Does it shake and vibrate when you're in gear and moving? If so the teeth on the gears may be worn or something.

My Corvair has this problem with second gear. The shifter tries to pop out while in gear and you can hear the gear (helical) whining and feel it vibrating. Needs a rebuild soon.
>>
>>17535346
What movie?
>>
>>17535810
Duel, in which a brotrucker earned his CDL and naturally tries to kill someone who passes him on the road.
>>
>>17535727
Correct; and, if you want to be autistic, the 1966 Green Hornet series. That abomination of a remake destroyed several '65s.
>>
>>17535806
The shifter itself doesn't shake too much. Feels like it's transmitting the vibration of whatever is causing it. It's entirely speed related and does it in 3rd 4th and 5th.
>>
>>17535806
Also it doesn't do it If I'm accelerating in the slightest

What's classier than Flathead i ask you?
If you like that choppy Flathead sound but want something that can make a respectable power number then you might consider a Y block, it shares the firing order of the Flathead but doesn't have the horrible siamesed exhaust or low compression.

Alright /o/
I'm in need of some advice/guidance... I've finally decided to try my hand at some body work, specifically rust repair. I'm a mechanic, not a body man, so.... not sure how well this will go

I've decided to work on my 79 subaru brat as an experiment, figuring that it would be the cheapest and quickest car in my collection to get done.
It is remarkably straight, but has the usual rust in the lower corners of the rear wheel wells and top side of passenger fender. Then fender I have a patch panel for, and am able to do myself. The rear corners, I am planning on using bondo and this self adhesive mesh patch to fill the holes and apply the bondo to that.
Has anyone here had any experience with doing this? Specifically, using these mesh patches?

>inb4 cut the rust out and do it the right way or don't do it at all
I will grind as much as I can off, and am well aware that this is a temporary fix. I am not looking for show quality here, this is a vehicle I purchased for $250 from a man who wanted it out the field where it sat for 20 years. I just want to make it a we footer and paint it this week, and make it.... 'presentable' for a couple years. Sorry for wall of text....

It won't work or last. Even on a complete shitbox it's just not worth your time. If you have access to the back of the panel you could weld in a half ass 18 ga steel patch from behind so you don't have to match the body line then bondo over that. Here's a professional service bulletin to explain what I am saying.

You need ratcheting wrenches if you don't have them, they're a god send, especially for installing converters.

The best part was after I got it bolted up, chrysler in all their ingenuity decided to make the bolt pattern for the converter offset and only align one way.

No problem just rotate the converter until it lines up right? No, the mounting tabs on the converter hit the weight on the flexplate before the next hole appears.

I had to fucking unbolt it AGAIN and pull the trans off a inch or two and repeat the process until the holes aligned.

Fucking hell I'm getting the sweats just thinking about it.

>>17537002
Ratcheting wrenches are thick, even regular wrenches would not work on some accessible bolts because you'd hit the case of the trans.

Not familiar with your story, 403 isn't a bad motor and can be built into something respectable if you care about originality.

If not depends on what you want and your budget.

Just want a fun driver? Drop in a mild 350 into it.

Late to the party on this thread but huuuuungh. Those were my childhood cars. Parents had three of them in succession. They are maintenance nightmares though, just fyi. All I ever remember is my dad working on them constantly.

Do have some good memories in them though. Mom had a top of the line luxury model 4 door with a 5 speed. Dad put a nice stereo in it. Ahe would take my sister and I out for drives at night in it. Put the sunroof back, jam some depeche mode or nsync, and we'd all sing along.

She also taught me how to drive manual in that car. She would let me shift gears while she drove.

Memories man.

So I said in the last thread that I wasn't going to put a 302 in the '63 Ranchero it since the steering/suspension/rear end is all for the inline 6, but it's been a week and I haven't found an inline 200 and I'm getting impatient. I don't understand why i couldn't put a 302 + C4 in it. It would bolt right up, and it seems like it would only be 100 pounds more than a stock inline 6 and 2 speed so that shouldn't fuck things too much. I'm sure I could drop 100 pounds from somewhere else. I'd figure I could weld the diff and see how long it takes to blow, and just not push the stock drums too hard. It's actually got a small block C6 in it, but I would lose that since it's heavier than a C4. Also check out that gnarly completely non-stock support bar (with holes in it?) thing he bolted in by the motor mounts. Wonder what that's about it.

Because the consensus on falcon boards is that to do a PROPER V8 swap you should upgrade the steering/suspension to a 65 falcon v8 one and go to discs/bigger drums with Granada/Mustang spindles and brakes. Which is a couple grand all told. But I'm thinking about just slamming a V8 in and making a death trap now, like the previous owner obviously did.

I posted it in the last thread but fuck it here it is

I'm not as classic as some of you guys but it's technically a 92 by date of manufacture.

1993 Ford Probe GT

Bought it on a whim, had been looking for one for a while. They are especially hard to find anymore and this one was rust free and had a straight body. Seller wanted 1100 I got them down to 1000 it was pissing coolant everywhere.

So far, in a week I have replaced

>timing belt
>water pump
>timing belt tensioner
>button the interior back together
>new JVC radio
>new lift supports for the hatch
>new clutch master and clutch slave cylinder

It needs a lot more work, the car was a virgin unmodified car, but it needs a complete AC system overhaul with new lines, luckily it has factory R134. It will also need an alignment and new tires, and the muffler has a hole the size of Rhode Island in it. The speakers are all blown too. It does handle very well and the stock V6 still has plenty of balls, will probably build a JDM motor for it and then rebuild this one and keep it as a spare.

pls no bully

also I didn't think xcalfag would post bread, nice car btdubs

I actually found a crate Pontiac 400. I figured out the 350 would cost a lot since i'd have to shorten the drive shaft and deal with my BOP transmission but $2,300 for that 400 longblock seems like a decent deal plus I'd rather spend more for a 400 since I wanted to ditch the 403 as soon as I can.

Hey guys, just bought a mostly original Red 1986 Pontiac Firebird with a 305 V8 5.0 L engine that's carbureted for $1200. It has some rust along the hood and other smaller edges due to being close to the ocean for a time, but the worst of it is some nasty A-pillar rust, and a hole that's in front of the front right tire--currently being covered up by a sticker that was not placed by me. I have it parked in a different location right now because I'm having an ex-mechanic helping me, so I can't provide immediate pictures, but I was wondering if I could have your guys' opinion on some gaskets for the fuel door lock--whether I should get them or not. I already have the lock, just need the rubber and whatever else it needs so then it can fit the hole.

1: I need to pump the brakes to get them to work. I'm thinking bleeding and adjusting (already has new pads) but the PO was saying something about a 70s GM master cylinder to make it brake better because the current one is a "juice brake" that requires pumping?

2: I broke the bottom mount on the smokers window, how do I fix that??

3: it rattles like crazy at 45 and im kinda scared to make it go faster. Can I realistically cruise at 65mph w/ a 53 flathead and 3spd?

sounds like you have air in your lines, I'm not aware of any properly working brake system that needs pumping, but I'm also not familiar with cars of that vintage

is there any brake fluid visible on the master or actuator rod? if you dont have any leaks it could just be a half-ass bleed job by the PO
>>
>>17544225

1. Rebuild/replace the master cylinder. If you can find one that fits, upgrade to a dish reservoir model for a little added safety. You shouldn't be pumping. If the pedal sinks, you've got a leak or the master cylinder has an issue.

2. Not sure on that one, but start looking for spare parts.

3. Rattles aren't normal. Suspension will likely need work, start with inspecting the tires for damage or uneven wear. Jack it up and wiggle the tires to check the ball joints and tie rods. Most of those parts are cheap.

A 4 speed will allow a higher final drive ratio usually.
The main concern here is that on all flathead engines, the exhaust ports run through the water jacket.
The other problem with 3 speeds is the rpm drop from gear to gear is greater, which can mean having to run the engine at a higher RPM per gear so that the next gear isn't lugging (both of these build up heat pretty fast)
That said, it's a flathead so it has probably already overheated at least once in its life and not much damage can really occur since the heads are nothing more than an iron plate.

I figured there was something wrong with the brakes... hopefully they just need to be bled.

Shit.

The car handles pretty well, I'm thinking (and hoping) its just the windows and the fact the driver door doesn't latch completely.

Odd. My coworker had 59 F100 with a straight 6 and 3spd and he took it up on the highway pretty often. Same with my 66 Dart with a /6. Maybe I should look into trading.

My 65 does fine on the highway, you just stay in the right lane and cruise at 60.

As for the brakes, chuck a new master cylinder in there. I had an old matter cylinder in mine and it failed while driving. That is absolutely one item you want to be sure of. Being able to accelerate is nice, but I'd rather be able to stop a moving vehicle, than not start a stopped one

>Yeah fans can suck up 30hp, go electric. You probably already saw the engine masters video on it.
What engine masters can't demonstrate is that fans really only take that hp when the car is not moving. At speed the incoming air actually provides force to also spin the fan.
Dyno'ing a fan isn't as straightforward as it seems.

either way, an electric fan is probably more efficient considering you can place it directly on the radiator to draw through. a fan like mine just haphazardly blows air throughout the engine bay.
>>
>>17545898
>What engine masters can't demonstrate is that fans really only take that hp when the car is not moving. At speed the incoming air actually provides force to also spin the fan.
>Dyno'ing a fan isn't as straightforward as it seems.

Didn't think about that before. Launching is important regardless when there is no air incoming. The added bonus of electric is being able to turn it off or slow it down at speed or cold temperatures so you know it definitely isn't drawing power.
>>
>>17545898
>>17545950
the thing about the dyno in engine masters is they simulate about 70mph worth of wind throughout the room.

you ever notice how they don't hook up vents to the exhaust manifold or don't put a fan up the engine before a run? the whole room is filled with wind.
>>
>>17545982
There's probably an exhaust fan at the back of the room.
>>
>>17546072
there is, but my point is that they simulate wind speed at the westech engine dyno.

not on their chassis dyno though.

Not in the area that I'm living in, but any jerk could also do something to my fuel tank, like pour water down it (happened to my grandmother recently).

Plus, it's just customary to be able to lock your car's fuel door.
>>
>>17545856
Could be a hole in the firewall that's letting the heat in or a lack of insulation. You'd probably be feeling the transmission slipping if that's getting too hot and I'd hope you have some sort of temp gauge to keep an eye on coolant temps.
>>
>>17546791
I've....never had a vehicle with a fuel door lock. Unless you count ones where the latch is beside the seat.
>>
>>17546940
Temp gauge on the cluster doesn't work, I think the PO installed something in the engine bay (pretty sure it's a temp gauge). I know the car isn't over heating though.

If only the vent windows worked, id actually stay cool in that metal shell driving in the Alabama sun.

I dig it. Those car show weenies don't understand what it means to appreciate a car unless its shiny as could be.

I always dig faded orange, too. Makes for a really nice aesthetic not many new cars/shiny cars can achieve. I always imagine faded red, orange, blue, teal, green, etc. cars driving along a highway with a beautiful sunset setting behind some mountains, a lake, or something rustic/natural/depressingly bitter sweet.

Any of you dudes have any experience trying to modify the I6 250? I'm trying to find a different intake manifold for my Maverick but don't want the 1 barrel / 3 carb setup (I have enough issues tuning ONE carb) and I can't seem to find any intake manifolds that would just bolt onto the engine.
I've found SOME stuff in Australia, but have no idea how well that would just bolt onto the engine, if it would at all.

Any advice?

Try turning your climate control temperature blend all the way to cool, and keep your recirculation door closed.

What's probably happening is once you're at cruising speed, the air is being forced through your vents and going through the heater core, effectively heating the cabin through the climate control system.

I really wish the previous owner of my Bronco hadn't bed linered the entire thing so I could just do a cheap rattle can job. I've been messing around with bondo and fiberglass recently. Even if you weld up the holes, you'll still have to grind them flat and bondo the remaining crevices to get a smooth paintable surface. The easiest way to fill holes diy is get the adhesive metal mesh plates, stick it on the back side of the body and fill over it with bondo fiberglass, then sand flat. Maybe you already know this, just an fyi if you didn't.

I used the fiberglass reinforced bondo for some little (smaller than a dime) rust holes on a fender I'll be replacing. I backed the holes with painters tape and peeled it off after I spread the stuff on it and before it solidified completely. It's stronger than the regular stuff but spreads rough like chunky peanut butter, so I smoothed out the high spots and finished with some regular.

This is the worst rust on the car, no access to the back, and there's foam all over behind it too. I'd like to cut the rust out for a little access to the area behind, to pull some foam out and treat the internal rust. I know I'll have to make myself the welder I ain't with the grinder and paint (and bondo) if I do cut it out and weld in a patch.

Yeah. If you look at my other posts, you can see that I'm looking at "door gaskets" for the dirty firebird's fuel door. It has an apparent original design where you have to unlock the fuel door with a key, and not pop it open at the driver's seat. I got the lock, I just need the correct rubber or whatever so the lock will fit. You know if a generic rubber gasket for the side doors will fit?

I suppose buying a normal gasket should do the trick, but I simply don't want to pay for more than I need.

>twf turd gen trans am

Just the base model, but regardless, yeah. Although I don't plan to race in it, only to cruise and play relaxing/depressing 80s music when the sun sets. The chassis is in pretty decent condition, along with everything else. Just needs some attention. For now, it's a running project.

today marks exactly 3 years since I first got the ford running and drove it. Man, time flies.
>first day I approached Bill Romanowski about it, it had been sitting for at least a decade at that point.

All where used for road racing back in the day and where homologation specials. That or a corvette.

They aren't bad they suffer from the same problems any other 25 year old car does but the V6 model is a hoot to drive at full tilt. I've got two of them this is my other one it's a 95 4-cyl and will be getting some much needed love soon

Stupid question on the 400 swap, what all is interchangeable between the olds 403 and Pontiac 400? for instance the Harmonic balancer, water pump pulleys, starter, and motor mounts? Also It currently has a TH350 but will that be able to handle the torque and hp of the 400? Anyway, I'm getting pretty excited about this swap and I can't wait until I can drive my Trans am with real Pontiac power.

The transmission and the engine mounts, thats it.
but $2,300?! thats 200 more than what I paid for my entire trans am.
>>
>>17549867
It's not "cheap" but I like the nice warranty on it and I'd rather be guaranteed that it's a good block.

Bro that looks good. Did you rattlecan it? I thought I'd read that in the last thread but wasn't sure. Are you going to wet sand it?

For shits and giggles.. thought I'd try and see if I would like it or not.

>>17550093
Yes, rustoleum rattlecan paint job. Traded all the rust with rust converter first, so hopefully this will hold up for a few years until I can do it correctly when the time comes. As far as wet sanding.... possibly...

Looks good! I dig it. My SS has a 20 footer that I'm going to try to make a little better with wet sanding. We'll see.

any of you guys know shit about squarebody chevies? I really wanna get one but I need to know if I have to budget in an axle swap.
some shit I've read says that 10 bolts are alright with lunchbox lockers but other shit says to just get a 14 bolt and a d44 and swap it out before doing anything to it.
what do?
>>
>>17551496

I think he's saying the LEDs are harsher and will make the plastic on the housings turn yellow, but your lamp housings should be glass and LEDs are actually easier on plastic I believe.
>>
>>17552067
what >>17552106 said
and no, leds aren't less harsh, they produce more UV than your average incandescent lamp. If it's not plastic you'll be fine though. If it is, you might want to spray it with an UV-resistant clear coat from the inside where the led illuminates it.
>>
>>17551914
Yea, 1980 model.
>>
>>17549888
Also you need a Pontiac flex plate.
In wish you luck buddy, after you get the engine kicking you can do the easy fixes like putting on snowflakes and getting a new hood and shaker.
>>
>>17553550
Unfortunately it sold before I could get it but I've found a complete rebuilt 400 for $3000 and it's local so I'm going to check it out soon. I think It came out of a Bonneville so I might have to do a bit of modifying for the motor mounts since I think the older blocks are a bit different. Even if it sells I'm dead set on a 400. Anyway, There's a lot of stuff I want to do after I get it running the heater core box was taken out by the previous owner so this car might be a good candidate for one of those "vintage air" ac and heat systems since I kinda want the defrost this winter.
