hey /o/, gotta question for anyone who likes tackling other people's electrical issues

So when i turn the key in the ignition with the clutch depressed, i hear one click but no noise - no crank or attempt to crank

everything is working when the battery is on, but the starter just wont go for some reason

I've been starting my car by leaving the battery on, then running a wire from the starter to the battery. there is a plug on the back of the starter that i unplugged, and i put the wire inside of that (where the pins are) and the other end to the battery.

Maybe I'm just an idiot, but itd be nice to figure out what needs to be replaced so i can turn my car on with the key again, so figured this might help.
