whats even worse are people who buy subaru's and plan on "going offroad" with them

i guess i should use this thread to explain common mistakes that idiots make when purchasing a vehicle they plan on adventuring with....
>>
>>17524777
Tell America that I want an offroad capable vehicle that I can depend on to get me in and out of where I want to go, then I'll think about it.
>>
toyotas are good offroaders
>>
>>17524799

alright fags, listen up

1.) you need ground clearance.
through large tires. this is the absolute most important thing when going offroad. its more important than having 4wd. its more important that having a lift.
your tire is what gives you total ground clearance, but also, is what navigates through hazardous obstacles. the bigger your tire, the smaller the obstacle becomes, this is very prevalent even a single additional inch will make or break the next dip in the ground, or large gouge, or rock.

2.) forest routes in all the good states (CA, OR, WA, UT, NV, CO) and canada require this ground clearance. these states are much different than the faggot shit you are used to if you live anywhere in central america or the east coast. get the idea of buying a subaru out of your head. its not going to work anywhere around here

3.) nissan is junk. just stay away, or learn the hard way.
they use sintered metal gears on the differentials, this is a main driveline component which is both prone to immediate failure and prone to premature wear. and is more costly to fix than an automatic transmission. nissan is absolute junk for offroad. and they don't even have large engines, you need a large engine when going uphill, and you also cant tow anything with a nissan.

4.) toyotas are not really made to handle any of the good places either. you are in for some trouble if you take any pricey toyota shit out here, unless you can really afford to fix something major. dont do it. it will happen, you will be fucked. make sure your toyota didn't cost you more than 5 grand if you plan on coming out to any of the good states
>>

I can only speak for small trucks here but,

TACOMA
A
C
O
M
A

Although only the pre-2004 and then only if you live where snow isn't common or you know the frame was replaced under warranty which is still available free for post-2002s

Reliability wise the original engine and transmission can be expected to run for 300,000+ miles with nothing except regular fluid changes and a preemptive timing belt change if you go with the V-6, if you go with something newer than 2004 the gen-2s tend to have minor rust issues and and the ball joints will need to be replaced at 150,000mi, however the engine and trans are still as solid.

The reason the Tacoma is more expensive than the Dakota or Ranger is because your getting a truck that will on average run 25-30% longer, the both of the other options will have transmission issues starting at around 150,000 miles, and the engine starts to go at 200,000-250,000 (180,000 if you have a SOHC in the Ranger), the Tacoma ends up being cheaper in the long run due to needing less work done on it, however that metric might change depending on how much work your willing to do yourself.
>>
I live in northern nv and my f150 has gotten me through some crazy places, shes been tough and reliable for me so far.
>>
>>17524777

American Top Gear taught me that a small Toyota will do more offroad than a dodge, a ford, or a chevy.
>>

Nigger have you seen what the technicals in afghanistan and iraq? If that doesn't prove Toyota's reliablity I don't know what does. Those fuckers attach AA guns to the beds of your average Tundra or Tacoma and they run motherfucker.

If they can handle the dunes of Iraq they can definitely handle any baby trail in America.

>>
>>17525586
>Nigger have you seen what the technicals in afghanistan and iraq?
Yes.

>If that doesn't prove Toyota's reliablity I don't know what does.
It does. Not at all.

>Those fuckers attach AA guns to the beds of your average Tundra or Tacoma and they run motherfucker.
Attaching tops a few hundred pounds to the bed of a truck does not affect it's ability to run. This means literally nothing to the reliability.

>If they can handle the dunes of Iraq they can definitely handle any baby trail in America.
Dunes are harsh on people, not automobiles. All you need is a decent cooling system and air filer and dunes are nothing.

The terrorists use them because they're available and common there.
Stop entrusting literal goat fuckers to figure out what truck is the best.

>>17525265
>The reason the Tacoma is more expensive than the Dakota or Ranger is because your getting a truck that will on average run 25-30% longer
Buy a 1 ton truck and it'll last 100-200% longer under the same usage.
If you baby a Ranger the same way the average Taco owner babies his Toyota, it'd last just as long as the Taco.

>>17524921

should also mention
standard truck tires installed on most full-sized trucks are adequate. going an 1-3 inches above this is ideal.

these are very large tires, and will do just fine.
you don't need 4wd unless you are planning on doing jeep trails. and 4wd is mainly for negotiating obstacles while on an incline.
you can visit about 90% of these areas with 2wd alone.
>>
>>17526017
>If you baby a Ranger the same way the average Taco owner babies his Toyota, it'd last just as long as the Taco.

quite true, but also notice how taco owners are actually babies themselves
they buy japanese because they need that safe-space. they always need to be assured something isn't going to break. they need this assurance because they don't actually know what they are doing.
owning a toyota is like a giant red badge of mechanical ignorance.

you don't really know how mechanical failures work tho. they don't ever happen unless you're an idiot

talk to any toyota mechanic who has been working at least 10 years. all kinds of pricey failures left and right

toyota owners are about the dumbest they come
>>
>>17529049

of course you never hear about when a toyota fails, because all their owners are simpleton faggots who drive 90% highway miles, none of them are actually put to work like american trucks are. literally none of them.

also, pickup trucks aren't meant for severe offroading. they're for carrying shit down roads, sometimes shitty roads, but roads for the most part, not ultra-technical trails and rock crawls. they're too big to be called offroaders. too big, too long, too heavy, and too wide. they're more like chunks of iron.

Just hear me out here, sure the Humvee is better for pure offload capability and the initial purchase price is low relative to it's capabilities, but your going to get Jewed with any repairs due to rare and expensive parts and you would need to use and carry an asston of diesel to get anywhere which gets expensive if you have to drive any distance.

Something like the Niva on the other hand,(assuming we could import it), is designed to be a cheap offroad shitbox, new examples would be apt to go for around 8-10K which make it competitive to get new over something used and due to the fact that it's used worldwide and the design hasn't changed much since the 80s, parts are cheap even if you have to import them, in addition to that since it's so light with large tires you have insanely low ground pressure so it pretty much just floats over mud and other obstructions. Sure it's not massive and doesn't have much engine but it's essentially a modernish Suzuki Samurai, it's not made to pull trailers or haul shit, it's meant to get you and a few other people to a remote destination and be easy on your wallet.

The Nivas started production in like 77-78 and the Gen 2 Samurais that we got in the US started in around 81 so they're not that far off in terms of development.

What I mean by "Modernized" is that it's still in production and can be bought new, in the US we were only able to import Samurais from 85-95 so all of the ones here are reasonably old, plus most of the new Nivas come with an EFI engine rather than carbed which is welcome for reliability.

they all sell in CA and normal people buy them. they are way too pricey to actually use offroad. have never, ever, once seen one of those on a trail which is difficult but within its capability. literally have never even seen one of those on dirt.
you can find a used one with 220k miles (not eurobitch kilometers) for just a shy under 10k burger dollars. (which is a ripoff).
those vehicles last around the 220k mark before needing a new engine and tranny IF they have been properly maintained. and you cant get a quality reman on those, you have to go to ultra mega shit LKQ and pay more money to get ripped off, or you can pay stupid money for a rebuild kit and have a machine shop do some work it.
its no where as affordable than just rebuilding an american truck which is 10 years and older

toyota is a joke.

20$ + free shipping for the entire assembly on ebay
it cost the person around 10$ to ship

You wouldn't need the new throttle body in the first place, parts for non-Toyota shit are cheap because there are tons of them in scrapyards rather than on the road.

>>
>>17536361
I can only speak for the East coast here, but as a Tacofag, it's rare that you see 1996-2000 Tacomas show up in scrapyards that weren't totaled by a collision, whereas with Dakotas and Rangers engine/transmission failures are what bring most of them in and there's easily 3-4 times the volume of Tacos despite similar sales numbers.
>>
>>17536415

in los angeles, those trucks are strickly driven by mexican gardeners. and mexicans are the worst car owners on this planet.
never change oil

but nobody is saying those trucks suck, asside from the rust and the frame snapping, they are pretty solid. especially out here in CA with pristine perfect auto weather.
but personally i would rather have a fullsized truck which is just as reliable if not better, and can tow large things, and can go offroad better, and has a huge market of used parts dirt cheap, and has better aftermarket for literally everything (powersource engines are transmissions are the best), and has a lot more room inside, and doesn't feel like a tincan
>>
>>17536507
Different strokes I suppose, around here having a smaller truck is nice for trails since you don't get battered by overgrown underbrush as much and you have a fighting chance on some ATV trails, plus the largest boat I've got is never over 2000lbs even fully loaded and pretty much anything past that is a PITA to deal with launching so I don't really need the extra tow weight.
>>
>>17536581

trailer towing
like a camper
>>
>>17536624
Yeah, I just use a camper shell on the back with an air mattress or bring a tent, since I backpack frequently I've never really seen the point of a dedicated camper you get screwed out of stopping at nice secluded places since it's so large and when you do find somewhere the usage fee is usually as much a cheap hotel room nearby, with just the truck I can just stealth camp somewhere with a view.

*sigh*
people just dont understand the 97-02 F-150 and Expedition

The asthetics look weak. They give a general impression of cheapness and are unattractive. But few people know these trucks on the inside.
They are built like tanks. Rock solid. It's the last real american truck.
Plenty of these trucks are still on the road, more than any other vehicle of the same years. And they never get the attention or respect they deserve.
It's the aesthetics, definitely not fords best. But this also is good, because it keeps the "hype" down. People don't want this truck, which is great.

Personally don't give a shit about aesthetics.

PSA regarding Toyotas:

Their D4D engines are fucking garbage, mostly because of the fuel injectors.

Seriously, do not buy any newer Toyota diesel if you want it to last. I've seen engines where the pistons have cracked due to the injectors failing after 120k miles. I've seen engines with oil pickups completely clogged with carbon deposits because the injector seat seals wear through after 60-70k miles.

This shit is not okay. Toyota reliability is a meme.
>>
>>17537961

plugs are difficult, but not with the right tools.
you need a special plug socket, and you also need a special 10mm socket you can only get at one place. plus you need an uncommon type of wrench extension

death wobble, not rattle, is from certain year superduty trucks (f250 and above) and is caused by the way the front end is manufactured, and mounted to the frame. there is a specific term for this "angle" which i forgot, its a variable used in alignment. and it has nothing to do with the engine. the only way to solve this problem is by welding these 15$ plates or brackets somewhere on the frame

Only in the desert. They also do well against IEDs because the medium support vehicles have their complete suspension setups and are easy to repair.

There's this one time we tried to get over a large piece of fallen concrete from a demolished building and we had to back up and go around simply because of the lack of articulation and weight. The Canadian G-Wagons vastly outperformed in articulation.

It's alright in the desert but shit for everything else.

Was yours an armored one as opposed to an unarmored Canuck truck? If that's the case no wonder you weren't going to be going up anything too easily, as was established earlier a vehicle that's too heavy isn't going to want to go up a rocky or steep slope.

It's cute that you think AA guns weigh "a few hundred pounds"

Try more like a literal ton.

Soviet ZU-23-2 - The double barreled AA cannon you most often see jammed in the back of a technical
Weight: 0.95 tonnes (2,094 lbs)

That's without ammo, either.

They're exceeding the rated bed capacity by at least 500 pounds or so. Plus ammo, which adds up very quickly.

Guyana

I live in a mountainous area and I go to cell sites, all with unmaintained paths.

The main "road" isn't maintained either so I have a winch on my l200 to drag me along it and help the DAF equipment truck. Thankfully it's all jungle so there are lots of large trees to latch on to. This is everyone's road.

Our telecoms road is in much worse condition and we usually hike up to the site first with all the light equipment we can carry to assess and maintain. If we find that we need any heavy equipment or materials to go up we come back next month with a team to recut the road. Next month because it takes a few days to a week to assess one tower.

Ah yeah. Up in North America, we either have the larger tractor vehicles do the pulling and cut paths in the area or we have the heavy logging vehicles with treads or military tyres. They build all our stuff and we don't have jungles to cut through. All our DAFs are built in order to handle the harsher roads.

I can't imagine the jungle terrain in terms of offroading for work. I normally do low-risk (safety wise) deliveries into thin forests or farming areas. When I'm not doing that, I like to go deep innawoods camping since we can drive the entire length of your country and we'll still be in the same county, lol.

I will try to remember to take pictures. I am often too busy dealing with one disaster after another. I have only been working this beat for 3 years but I started 6 years behind schedule and I feel like that I am now 12 years behind schedule. They still have the defender that I was initially given waiting on a head for the last 2 years. Have got people who have been out of cell service for over 4 months.

Despite the monopoly the company can't "afford" actual equipment so we cut the roads with man power. If you have a chainsaw in your crew then you a walking next to the boss.

That's true for some parts, but for light trucks there's a 25% import tariff and insane crash safety and emissions requirements that's kept the domestic makers from having to consider reintroducing cheap trucks which really sucks ass, back around 2010 the Indian car maker Mahindra was looking at importing their Imperio which is similar in size to a Taco or Ranger but has a diesel option and would run around 11,000 new with a 4wd version starting at around 16,000 but they decided against it since the testing and import tariffs made it too expensive to be competitive in the US.
