Looking to buy a Nissan 300zx or 240sx, what should I look for? Pretty new to cars so still pretty unsure. General Nissan thread also I guess
>>
Look for ones with the wheels bolted on in the correct direction.
>>
A 350z goes for the same price as a 300zx in my area, I would check those out too.
>>
>>17502102
I've heard that 350 isn't as good as 300, any truth to this?
>>
If you're new to cars, avoid Z32 300ZX's and any kind of 240SX

Z32 300ZX
>extremely difficult to work on
>parts are expensive
>maintenance likely neglected by poor or dumb previous owners
>likely abused by above owners

240SX
>rice taxed to fuck
>almost all are beat to shit, have salvage title, and or have significant damage
>parts are expensive
>likely to get stolen
>fanbase are fucking douchebags

Honestly, if you're looking for your first car person's car, look for a Civic hatchback or a Miata. They still have the douche fanbase and get stolen more often than some cars, but at least most are still in good shape and are easy to work on. Parts are cheap too

Z32, more bang for your buck with the way 240's are now.
Also what >>17502112 said. If it's within your means, a Civic hatchback would make for a great daily that would teach you about cars, then once you have gotten some more hands on experience, get a Z32 as a 2nd car.
>>
Assuming you're not looking into twin turbos, a stock 240sx performs about the same as a stock 300zx. The 300zx has more power, bigger brakes, stiffer suspension, LSD, etc, but it is all offset by the extra weight.

Plan to swap pretty much everything on a 240sx to make it competitive. They are not popular for being good stock; they are popular for their ease of accepting better parts.

The 300zx is ultimately a nicer car.
>>
>>17502125
Between a 90-00 Miata (something I was thinking about) or a civic hatchback, which one would be better in terms of ease of modification? looking to tune a daily, so not too much but a little more than stock (being new to working on cars as well)
>>
>>17502138
I owned a couple Civics, so I'd say Honda out of principle, just due to the immense aftermarket and how cheap parts are, but I have no Miata experience.
You could probably find a decent hatchback in relatively stock condition for under 2k, then go ahead and get intake, exhaust, suspension and wheels and keep costs under 3000 (depending on wheel and tire costs).
>>
>>17502133
The Z33 is in no way superior to anything and you know it.
>>
>>17502144
what year range should I be looking for? should I go for a newer or older model?
>>
>>17502160
88-91 (4th gen) is my favorite but they're aftermarket is starting to fade away.
Extremely easy to get stuff for Civic's from 1992-1995 and 1996-2000 still (5th and 6th generations respectively).
Definitely keep your eyes out for hatchbacks though, the coupes and sedans just aren't the same in my opinion. Also, the years after 2000, the US market didn't get hatchbacks.

Here it is, z33 are for faggots who are too pussy to build and repair a car "Just buy z33 omg their like the same price omg so good omg, best car ever" coming from the fact that they look like shit, get a z32 as a daily, get a 240sx as a drift/weekend car. I own a stock 240 and their fun af. Also a 240 is more badass then a z32. The z32 has bigger brakes, 28 and 30 calipers. Z32 is better then a 240 but it doesn't have great weight balance. Fuck a z33, get a 240 or a z32 BUT NO Z33 DONT JOIN THE MEME. If u find a stock 240 get that, if not get a z32, z32 better daily and more expensive, 240 parts are cheap af!! Idk where people are saying their expensive, u can buy the whole motor and trans for 250 bucks, can't find a stock 240 get a z32.
>>
>>17502213
how do you feel about Honda crxs? been eyeing some and from what I've seen they're pretty popular to modify
>>
>>17502263
Yeah, those would be like a fastback variant of the 88-91 hatchbacks (sloped liftgate instead of squared off hatch). I've never owned one, but I hear some minor things aren't interchangeable. Including interior trim, fenders, bumpers, etc. Not entirely sure what their aftermarket is like, but I know powertrain and suspension wise most everything should match the Civic hatch of the same year.
>>
>>17502237
What the fuck is wrong with you
>>
>>17502278
appreciate the input. I still have my eye on possibly a 300zx but gonna see if I can get my hands on a Miata since in my area it looks like a lot of the civic hatchbacks are already modded to hell.
>>
>>17502071
>Pretty new to cars
Then why look for an older car?
>>
>>17502310
aren't they easier and cheaper to tune? I was under the impression that if I wanted to get into tuning I'd need an older car due to not having an incredibly large budget
>>
>>17502323
I don't know a lot about tuning, but isn't it the same amount of money doesn't matter about the year
>>
>>17502323
They're definitely not cheaper or easier to maintain, and people fuck the shit out of these cars so yeah. By 'newer' car I just mean 2000s or something
>>
>>17502071
A good condition 300zx and 240sx are not going to be cheap. If you want to tune, get a used FR-S. Reasonably priced and has a large aftermarket, they also tune well.
>>
>>17502354
I assume you mean the newer scion fr-s right?

Yeah, unless you live in europe where it's just a gt86. They make good tuning cars, hell they're basically made for it. I'm just worried OP is going to get in over his head. Everything about the 300zx and 240sx isn't cheap. Most of the times they become massive money pits.
>>
>>17502377
this is OP
how would you compare to the other "beginner tuner cars" suggested here (Miata and civic hatchback)

The gt86, brz, frs, are the like super easy to get into, what I have heard, remember gt86 is the retars brother of ae86
>>
>>17502397
The FRS is very beginner friendly. Lots of simple bolt ons mods and has a massive community. Even if you're stuck, I guarantee you someone has put up a youtube how to video.
>>
>>17502437
I think I might consider that too among the list of potential options. Will try for FRS but if I can't find one at a decent price I'll probably go for a Miata
