I carry a knife, gun, cigarette lighter air compressor (in case of flats), and a fire extinguisher. I kind of rely on the flat tire that I potentially can get being minor enough that I don't need to use a spare. Generally, I also carry a tool kit with some basic stuff, but not at the moment.

Other than that, I carry my phone, keys, and wallet. No reason to carry anything more.

I do keep an ice scraper in my car year round because living in new England is rolling the dice everyday as far as weather goes.

I live in Canada, so I keep a collapsible aluminum shovel in my car in case shit gets snowy.

I also keep a simple tool kit (the kind with like 40 tools for $40) just in case - has everything you would need.

I don't keep dog food or cat food, or kitty litter...but I have 4WD w/ BFG KO2s.

I keep a first aid kit, emerg blanket, some Clif Bars, stainless bottle with water, and a 6 pack of gatorade in a tote in the back. Some spare clothes and work boots, a big knife, breaker bar, and spare fluids. Sounds like a lot of shit, but again, it all fits in a Rubbermaid tote.

at first i thought that cat litter sand thingie might be actually a great idea because it's absorbing water well, and therefore could help you in case of large spill over a place that's hard to dry. then i saw dog food and realized what kind of image it is.
Anyway, I happen to be retarded from time to time, and so one time i've managed dug myself up in the mud on the forest road. I just got the car back then, all i had inside was a roll of toilet paper. I spent almost entire day on running around, borrowing car jack, looking for things i could put below my wheels (found bunch of unused paving tiles), trying to dig it up with borrowed shovel, etc.

After that experience, i'd say it's necessary to have a car jack, towing rope, and something that's sturdy piece of material, optimally a proper material bag. Shovel just made everything worse. Though it should be easier to not be retarded and knowing your car limits, but i guess running deep into extreme 4wd territory is exactly what you need to do in order to learn about those limits.
