Are there any SC owners here that could tell me a bit about their reliability?

I live in Southern Ontario, I'm looking at one for my first car. It wouldn't be a daily driver for now, though I might need it to drive maybe 20km a day in a few months. Probably would only put a few thousand km on the car in a year.

Most of the SC's in the classified are about 3500 CAD, if I could talk the owner down and buy for 3000 and then use 1000 to do some repairs, could I get a driveable car?

I know Toyotas have legendary reliability, and I know the 1UZ engine is godly in that respect, but what about the rest of the car? I'm considering a BMW 3 or Merc C class as well, but I've heard reliability horror stories. Also, no V8.

Anyone that owns or had Celica could redpill me about them a little? 5th/6th gen to be exact.
Im mainly concerned about how well you can tune them or how fast they accelerate.
I was mainly looking at ones with 2.0 and 120-156 HP models, because they are the strongest in my budget range (up to 3k $, east eurofag so they might be cheaper here)
Also are they fast with such engines? How do they do on snow?

I always wanted one for my supra since I have sack boy in my civic. Long story short, I got both of these for $3 at a claw machine at my local steak and shake. Just gotta figure out how I want to arrange them in my car.
>>
>>17502596
Honestly don't think anything is rusted. I'll probably hit everything with penetrating oil just in case though. Also suspect the motor mount I need to remove to do the job is causing uncool vibrations. My Civic is being a gud car and I want Corolla-chan to be the same.

As far as I know the Corolla is fixed. No leaks but the bottom coolant hose was cold so I put in a new thermostat, radiator cap, and a new air filter because a rat was chewing on it. Told Mom to keep an eye on the water levels. If it's good for a week I'll change out the water for coolant. The good thing about it constantly needing a refill was that it pretty much did a super flush on itself. The water comes out super clean now. Used to be dirty as fuck.
>>
>>17510107
desu you could throw in some water wetter and leave it like so.

>>17504130
It wouldn't be for the sound. Every dyno run I've seen and people I've talked to with Dezod headers do have actual gains with HP and even more when it comes to torque. It's not much but it's still something.

kinda reminds me of a chrystler.

got the head off to a machine shop, spent 700 bucks all-in-all on resurfacing the head, getting a valve job, and a graphite/stone gasket for the head.

i'm gonna be spending another 150$ on ARP head studs, and that should about cover that.

any advice on what to do with my cam covers?
they're dirty and i want to do something with them before i put them back on besides cleaning.
>>
>>17511844
Do you know if it was the green or red header? And yeah it really isn't much performance gain but they supposedly make the car a bit more torque-y and combined with an exhaust and intake should give me a little boost at least from what I've been seeing. If not it'll sound nice at least.

Are you the tc bro who put his fog lights in recently? If so done anything else lately or just been hooning?

I have a 2003 MR2 with the terrible sequential manual transmission. It's in great shape, I just don't like it, and haven't for the six years I've had it.

I dream of swapping it for a manual someday, but the parts alone are around $2,500, and I don't have a garage suitable to do the work myself. It's also getting older and after 14 years out in the sun and rain could use a new roof. (Not leaky, but looks like shit.)

I could do all this work, or there's another 2003 with a manual transmission for $9,000 at a Subaru dealer near my house. It's the color I really wanted when I got this one, manual, and looks better, but has about 145,000 miles on it while mine has 135,000.

Should I keep my car and do the work, or trade it in and pay the difference, but get a car with more miles and an uncertain maintenance history?
>>
>>17538360
I'd trade in sine you don't like it anyway.

Have you done brake pads on your spyder by the way?
>>
>>17538366

I don't think I knew I was supposed to do anything with them. The stock brakes have always been fine.

I'm still leaning that way. I'm kind of sentimental about the car. I've been everywhere from Chicago to New Orleans in it and I'd trust it to get me to Alaska next week if I had to go.

I just find the SMT frustrating because it's so ever-fucking slow to shift. I can't believe I wouldn't gain at least a full second 0-60 if I had the exact same car with a clutch pedal.
>>
>>17538726
I'm surprised there aren't more tC's honestly, they're kind of like a civic equivalent.

I was considering the red headers with the CEL eliminator since Florida doesn't give a fuck. I'm still undecided on what all I want to do to it though. I'm not sure if I wanna dump money into the tC now or just save it for a future down payment on something with RWD and more power.

SC owner here.

Starting with reliability, it falls into the JZ and the UZ category. Both engines are reliable but the 1UZ is slightly more reliable.

On the older SC400s and even 300s there isn't much to go wrong with, at least in starting up the car. There is a huge issue with 89-97 Lexus ECUs, they tend to go over the years and many owners don't know that.
Their car starts acting up and they think it's time to sell it when all they need to is repair the ECU.

Other than the 1UZ being a tough engine, the SC is just as tough. The doors are probably the toughest ones on any coupe ever built. The one major thing you need to look at is the power steering pump. If it's leaking, it will blow your alternator anytime soon. There are a few issues here and there but there are very minor and expected with a 20 year old car such as interior cracking, lcds and other electronics not working.

Overall, it's a great car but if you're buying a car that has many issues and you want to fix it, I suggest you save money and buy a better conditioned one.

I'm pretty set on selling my tC and getting one of the twins after college because muh rwd. But there's a part of me that wants to turbo my car and keep it. I guess there isn't anything to lose from getting the new headers but I think you should redo the whole exhaust while you're doing that if you're trying to maximize your gains. I've decided to get a Weber carb for my Celica. I'm debating whether to get the 32/36 progressive carb that most everyone with carbed Toyotas seems to get, or the 38 synchronized which supposedly provides poorer fuel economy, but gives me more low end grunt. Does anyone have experiences with these carbs? I'm leaning towards the 38. Is the extra power worth the hit in fuel economy?

tl;dr do I get a 32/36 Weber or a 38 for my 20r?

I kind of want a turbo too but then the same thinking sets in where I'm like, why would I spend 5-7k turboing it when I could put that towards something like an IS

If I do the headers I'm getting an exhaust and intake as well to maximize muh gains. Maybe a unichip. Still undecided though.

I was experimenting with sizes and found that 16s worked best on my sw20 all around. you can throw good size meat on em and they handle the best imo. don't forget about the stagger too 16x8 / 16x9 +35-30 will get you perfectly flush and for tires you could go up to 215 in the front and however wide you want in the back, preferably 225s or so. no larger than a 50 profile too and you're set for any stock strut spring setup or coilovers

I'm looking for some daily use, cheap, fun in snow car with as good 0-100 as possible.
After some time I ended up with decision between Spyder and Celica
Can someone with either one recommend one of them?
Alternatively I've been think about VTi civics but most of them are riced as fuck
(because of how insurance works in my country, it can't be bigger than 2.0 and the can't be older than '97)
>>
>>17559077
spyder!
I drive it in europe and it works well in snow and many use it on ice track even.

Its honestly hard to beat spyder because it combines
>great mpg for daily
>plenty of storage for daily
>insane reliability
>commute is fun cause fun car
>can be taken to the track whenever
>turns heads everywhere
I use mine for daily/racecar and it works great. Just make sure to get TTE exaust or something that isn't the original peashooter. Also post facelift reccomended since it comes with LSD and 6 speed manual.

My left rim turned out to be crooked, so I will get thet straightend out at some point.

I'll be real, it is a shit ton of fun. I just don't know if I would go for a fourth gen. I'd try to find the engine and transmission from a USDM one. Parts and maintenance won't be as much of a challenge.

But it is so much fun to drive around and it spools so quickly.

That's the base G6 right? I visited a bodyshop 2 weeks ago, and the guy was selling this one for 300€ with a bit less than 150000km. 4EFE as well.

I couldn't test drive it that day, but he said the 6SP makes it quite snappy, even though it's a 1.3L. What's your opinion on it?

4A-FE? Looks rather clean, but you can do better. How did you do it?
>>
>>17559247
I've never had lack of space.
Cubbies fit duffle bag each, frunk can take luggage and a shopping bag easy.
Sure its a bit annoying to let the seat down and put shopping in the back when having a passanger but for a daily you almost never do so it's barely an annoyance.

I'm in AZ sadly. It's hella fun man.

I'm having a transmission issue with it though, basically when shifting out of second into third it stalls out unless i rev straight into 4. I came from a 99 escort zx2. It was peppy and fun but this is a much smoother ride for sure.
As far as the transmission goes, I'd flush the fluid and get some fresh atf in there to see if that helps at all. But I feel the same way, I am very willing to put money into my car to care for her.
