if you live near a carvana its a 7 day return policy. i don't really see why you need more than a few hours with a car, apparently 20% of people dont test drive anymore they just do their homework

The dealerships around here are all on the same stretch of highway, so they all have the same test drive route.

A good friend got a 2017 GTI w/DSG and autobahn pack/sport pack. I've driven it hard a few times.

My driving history: 1993 Nissan 240sx first car, still own it after a decade. Highly modified, daily driven.

The GTI is a great example of a modern sports car done right. The balance of the ABS and stability systems is magical. The DSG transmission is near perfect, this is coming from a manual purist mind you. If its going to be your daily driver, then I highly suggest the DSG with whatever package that gets you radar cruise control.

Note you probably wont be able to rent a GTI, it'll be a plain Golf more than likely. So sports car 'test drive' doesn't apply, but things like comfort, visibility, interior space, etc can be tested.

Note, in terms of reliability the car has had a severe sunroof leak (lol VW) that made my friend glad he leased the car so he has the option to dump it. The dealer has been meh about helping, not being difficult just not giving top priority. Dealership had a "VW rain leak specialist" fix the issue, ended up not fixing the issue. Leaks really bad, like active drip.

I rented a miata for 24 hours before buying mine. Only paid $35.
