Depends, they usually have more features built in like integrated waste gates and blow off valves which up the value some, and often they are made with reliability ahead of performance, so in a lot of ways they are over built and tough.

Plus if it is a very specific model of turbo that was only used on one type of engine then it will be expensive just due to the small scale of manufacturing.

It depends on what you are trying to do...

Are you trying to get a car back on the road that has a blown turbo? OEM or quality rebuild.

Are you trying to blow up your engine with a tune run off a chinese OBD connector into your android phone? Aftermarket.


If you are going from OEM to big boost turbo, you need to take into consideration the entire turbo system, fuel system, ignition, and possibly Engine management hardware/software.

What car are we talking about, and what are you trying to do?

I've actually thought about this. Just browsing rockauto you can find OEM turbos from various manufacturers for reasonable prices. I think it would be pretty cool to use one to boost my old BMW i6, on <12psi but you can also get turbos on ebay for cheap too

I know some dudes have bought diesel turbos and subaru turbos for cheap and make a decent build out of them

If you drive an autotragic though, you might think the SC is faster because it gets instant torque.
But a manual turbo doesn't have that problem.
