Well, first we ought to take a look at what the general characteristics behind the AE86 are.

The AE86 was a car from the mid-eighties that:
>was relatively cheap
>came in multiple variations of body style and appearance
>had a slower, less sporty, more economical sibling
>was very lightweight (~1000kg compared to ~1300 for an FD)
>had good suspension for a car in its time and at its price point, but not necessarily good in a more general sense
>had Macpherson front suspension with four-link live axle rear suspension with coil springs (compared to FC which had independent rear suspension and began being sold halfway throughout the AE86's lifespan, AE86 was not great outside of its pricerange)
>had very large aftermarket support creating many improvements over the base design, allowing an owner to improve vastly on the car's performance
>had legitimate use and success in some form of racing during its heyday
>lended itself to being underestimated due to its technical insufficiencies compared to other enthusiast cars of its day

So, for an American or European car to be considered like the AE86, it:
>should not be a proper sports car, because those are too expensive and technically impressive for their times to match
>probably can't be a muscle car, because those are too large and too focused on engine power to match

Name a more non-AE86 car than the Mustang SVO

With this, I'm going to go with the AMC Spirit GT for America.
>certainly not expensive
>had a 3-door liftback and 2-door sedan versions
>several levels of suspension and engine performance, could easily be interpreted to be the mid-level straight-six Spirit GT with optional suspension upgrades
>~1150kg for the base model
>A-arms in the front and live rear axle with suspension upgrade package makes for equivalent suspension to the AE86
>had and still has aftermarket support not just for its own trim, but for the high performance Spirit AMX you could get parts for and put onto the GT.
>had success in IMSA racing
>generally looked down upon by muscle cars
>>
>>17475324
Don't forget, you can even compare the Trueno and Levin sister models to the Mustang and Capri.
>>
>>17476056
You can't count that when it's exclusive to another market.
>>
>>17476066
Why? OP presumably meant a Japanese AE86, which came in the Toyota Corolla Levin and Toyota Sprinter Trueno versions with different front and rear fascias; the US Foxbodies also had separate models as the Ford Mustang and Mercury Capri, again with different front and rear ends.

Easily, I would say the Crown Victoria. Cops use them to chase criminals in sport cars. It isn't them most powerful car, but gives sporty cars a run for their money. Best of all it has the equivalent of Takumi's Tofu car. The Crown Victoria used as a taxi or a pizza delivery car.

Chevrolet Vega Cosworth

-lightweight RWD shitbox
-basic ass transportation in basic form
-add a high revving 4 cylinder twin cam engine designed by a high performance 3rd party engine builder
-profit!
>>
>>17476200
How does it give sporty cars a run for their money?

It weighs a shit ton, has an anemic V8, slush 4 speed auto, solid rear axle suspension, brakes are trash, and is slow as balls to 60 mph
>>
>>17476239
Simple, the ae86 had shit horsepower and low torque. However, it gave sporty cars a run for it's money. The Crown Victoria has shown itself to be more than capable in chasing down criminals in sport cars. On paper it is nothing, on the streets it has shown its value.

btw, A4GE is basically a Ford BDA-tribute engine.

I vote the 78-82 Ford Fairmont
>based on common fox body platform
>came in numerous configurations (wagon, ute, sedan, coupe)
>lightweight
>V8 READ
>solid rear-axle
>nothing special
>>
>>17476158
Because OP asked for the American AND the European AE86 equivalents.
>>
>>17477482
To add to this, you can also consider the G-Body platform cars considering they were the Fairmont/Fox Body's main competition
