As long as you can get a decent set of the without spending a lot of money, totally go for it. They're the best looking OEM wheel for that car. Nobody will give you a hard time about it being a non-SHO.

It's the same thing as putting M5 wheels on a stock E39 or putting GT wheels on a V6 Mustang. It's only faggy if you rebadge it to what it isn't.

Bought myself a new battery without testing my alternator because I knew the battery was old as fuck anyways, but now when I leave the car sit for say, 18 hours, it struggles for a split second while it starts.

Like it doesn't "jump" to life. I'm gonna test the alt today anyways, but could this kinda draw be caused by that, or should I keep looking...?

>>17475475
let me explain it a different way Mr. I speak only in greentext. Theres clearly a miscommunicaton

The oil darkens quickly. Like, in about a couple months or so, it gets black, you can smell metal in it, etc. Thats what I meant. The temp gauge isnt too high, the dipstick is showing that the oil is fine, and not burning away like typical oil burning, it just blackens out relatively quickly. When oil gets black, its considered worn out, right? Therefore, I should know whether or not to change my oil at the regular intervals, or change it more often?
I ask that, and then you show up and assume youre the only person on earth that knows about dipsticks. great

>wants to change the rims on a taurus

It's normal for oil to discolor pretty quickly. Color doesn't necessarily dictate the oil's quality. Is it just dark brown or is it literally black and burned? How does it smell?

Here's the deal. I intercooled my car and added a boost controller(bleed valve for the wastegate).
Originally the boost went only up to the second last notch, after intercooling it went a bit over it. Now after a few hundred kilometres, it goes all the way to 7, probably over if the piece of shit sticks at there and can't go over it, even if the bleed valve is completely closed.

What gives, why does it do this? Could my turbo be toast, if the intercooled and playing with the bleed valve was too much for it to handle.

Yeah...it may just have been a shitty one, but I had to crank the volume on my ipod (this was a while ago) and on the stereo just to get it to normal listening volume. I had slightly more success with radio adapters (you plug your phone/player in, it broadcasts whatever your phone is playing on a low-power adjustable FM frequency, you turn your radio to that frequency and there you go), though I'm not sure you can actually get those anymore and it was tough to find a clear frequency when visiting big cities and whatnot.

Hey /o/

I'm in the market to buy myself a (technically first) car. I found a decent Silvia for 700 euros.
150k km on the odometer
120 hp
1.8 l stock engine

I've got a few questions about the car since my past experience with cars is a Yugo I've shared with my brother.
1)Is it a good first car?
2)How is the maintenance? I understand it's a 30 y/o Nissan, but there are a few car mechanics in my family that could help me out.
3)What's the fuel economy on a stock Silvia?
4)Is it a good car for DD? How would it perform if I drive it 3-4 times a week?
5)This is an S12, correct?
6)Would an engine swap be possible if I so choose?
7)How does the Silvia compare to the 86/85 from the same era?
thank you for any further replies
>>
>>17477369

It's actually a 2000$ header. The gaskets are the same as the stock ones.
>>
>>17477443

Same as the stock ones meaning they're brand new but they look identical with what came with the car.
>>
>>17477413
I will compare it to my Bluebird which is FWD, but has or at least should have the same tech as the S12 silvia.

>1)Is it a good first car?
Yes and no. They are "reliable" but things do go wrong with such an old car often. Rust will be an issue.
>2)How is the maintenance? I understand it's a 30 y/o Nissan, but there are a few car mechanics in my family that could help me out.
Stupid simple mechanically, if you hear a weird rattling/ticking sound at around 3k RPM when you hit boost, see black smoke from your exhaust coming and the car starts to bog down, it's the pop up valve. It's this smallish can shaped piece of shit on top of the intake manifold, you can screw it out with a 41mm wrench and plug that hole up with a plug of some sort.
>3)What's the fuel economy on a stock Silvia?
Shit, those things are surprisingly thirsty for a 1.8 litre shitbox engine
>4)Is it a good car for DD? How would it perform if I drive it 3-4 times a week?
I doubt it would have any major issues, mine does not have any and it's already seen well over 300k km
>5)This is an S12, correct?
I think so
>6)Would an engine swap be possible if I so choose?
Anything is possible. I've seen two older gen silvias with swaps. other was a CA19DET swap from a later 180SX and other one had an SR20DET. THe stock engine of your pictured car should be an C18ET if it's turbocharged.
>7)How does the Silvia compare to the 86/85 from the same era?
It looks better, should be slightly more powerful, apparently has slightly inferior suspension and slghtly weaker aftermarket support in terms of mods and shit. It also does not suffer of rice tax as bad.

Where the fuck did you find an old Silvia for 700 bucks anyway? Been looking at one for ages and haven't found a single one up here.

>How exactly do these make you faster?

How do they not let you go around corners faster? And if you're not installing them for that reason then why are you installing them?

And Coil overs are easy way to have adjustable dampening camber and height for legitimate performance reasons with out buying an entire adjustable suspension setup.

My car takes tires in a 245/60r14, which is hard to find, and expensive.

700 for a set, but for that money I could get a set of 16in wheels and corresponding tires.

Q:

The mid eighties models only put out about 160-180 and now less than that considering its probably lost HP since then.

If you can find one with a 351 I believe they came with a 5spd Getrag which makes hwy driving much more bearable. I have a 95, 302 with the mazda transmission it can do 80mph reliably at about 3k

>>

It should but you'll have to have the proper Offset and wheel width or you'll have clearance issues while turning.

It would probably closer to 245/40/R16 if you had the same wheel width as before, if you stuck with the same height ratio of 60 the tires will be considerably bigger and again you may have clearance issues.

You can get a bigger wheel but keep the over all diameter the same by picking proper tires, making mileage and speed differences at the gauges negligible.

You'll have to use shorter sidewalls to keep the tire circumference the same so your speedo doesn't get fucked with.

For the 16s you'd need 245/50R16s.

im thinking about picking up a del sol for 3.5k with 100k miles. The owner mentioned it has lightened fidanza flywheels and shortshifter. Which i dont like. The car seems to be in good condition, but i have a nagging feeling it was raced. Anything i should be particularly paying attention when i check it out in person? Transmission/clutch? How do I know if my car is running too hot.
The thermostat says its about half way. But it feels like fire to the touch under the hood even after 30 minutes. Ive had a car that runs hot before and it felt about the same. Id usually ignore it but the car drops idle and the vibration sounds louder for a quick second and Im worried Im going to blow a gasket. Maybe its doing that to protect the car but I need to fix the issue if thats the case.
Its also not using any of the antifreeze I put in it about 3 months ago. Still basically full to the same level. About half a year ago when I bought the car it had some weird thick stuff where the coolant goes. I cleaned it out but is it possible the hose is clogged on it.
>>
>>17478978
Get an infrared thermometer or find a friend who has one. If it's really running too hot you will either lose coolant or burst a hose.

When you let it idle for a while does the fan cycle on and off? What car is this?

>>
My truck stopped overheating after I recharged the a/c. It hit +38C here today and it didnt fluctuate at all, when normally it does. Am i missing something or is that connected to the cooling system..?
>>
>>17478978
If you are missing the heat shields to your exhaust it will be hot as fuck under the hood. It shouldn't be like fire hot under the hood under normal circumstances, just hot. Do what the other guy said and borrow thermometer. If not I would at least see if your coolant is moving in the radiator, if not you have a bad water pump.
>>
>>17479149
Doesn't running the ac make your cooling fan run continuously?

the A/C is probably forcing the fan to run on low to get air moving past the condenser

I accidentally broke my vacuum switch valve while moving the filter around.
The long tube broke off into the hose
1) How would I go about getting it out of the hose. Tried sticking a bent hanger into it but its not working.
2) Is this something I should replace or can I just epoxy it together if I ever get it removed. I can cost quite a bit
3) How critical is this to the car. Can I not drive this anywhere at all until I fix it.
Someone basically emptied out every car similar to mine at the junkyard so I dont know if Ill have luck finding it there.
>>
>>17479425
there's minimal wear to the body, most of the wear that develops in the body is from power from the engine and stress incurred from rough roads.

>>17479428
They'll hold more value, rare options in cars almost always mean higher value.

Manual Muscle cars almost always demand higher prices.
>>
>>17479430
What size hose? they sell vacuum line by the foot at most autoparts stores.

Broken vacuum parts, and lines induce leaks into the Vacuum system causing rough idle, bad enough in some cases where it won't run at all.
>>
>>17479465
I cant tell you the size, its take it to the auto store but I cant disconnect the hose from the other side. It has a smaller stiffer hose running halfway through it and the friction is too strong.
Im tempted to heat it up somehow and see if that makes it easier to pry to part out.
>>
>>17479430
1) Possibly us some sort of lubricant like dish shop and squeeze it out like a pimple.
2) Unless you seal the crack perfectly with epoxy and sealant and can still put on the hose, then yo need to replace it. All cars are different, you may be able to find one online for under $50 but a dealer may get closer to $100, DO NOT US A DORMAN PRODUCT, complete waste of money.
3) And yes you need to replace it, its most likely gonna throw a check engine light on minimum, and depending on the system that switch controls it could cause a fuel/air mess up.
>>

wouldnt dish soap mess up the hose?

Reliability on the 305 is pretty great as far as my family has seen. My engines an 85, my dad's is a 79. Both have never had any major problems. I've got about 150,000 on mine and my dad's is around 265,000. Maintenance is easy, i just change my oil every 4000 miles or so. My dad's doesn't need changing because it uses so much we just keep adding more though kek. Mine uses almost none. Neither have much power, and only mine will do a burnout.

Depends on a number of factors, so there's no telling what you would end up with.

You could easily have a turbo that spools up late and just driving in the lower rev range could keep your MPGs normal.

Something that I loved since seeing it for the first time was MR2 were Prelude, especially the first one because of it's speed that would really be handy for me (bypass on daily route, on the highway quite often and some first steps in racing/autocross)
The problem is, that as I said earlier I'm poor as fuck and the snow is something more than common on the roads, so I suppose that MR2 is out of question since Ive read that they often end up as money sinks + the oversteer can get really bad at snow.
Alternatively I've been thinking about 90s celica or Integra.
I know that Celica is pretty good at snow, but does it apply to the older ones to?
I'm really torn between these 4 and wanted to get some help regarding these cars or some new suggestions

Rebalance them, rotate them around to see if the vibration changes, tire receiving the most weight goes in the back right.

Any idea how much weight was added to balance them?

Pretty much any standard transmission car owned by anyone under 45 has been abused in my experience.

Have him drive it around for you. Ask him to do a pull or two from zero. See if he can properly downshift or if he butchers something as simple as a rev match.

I've checked my alternator and it's good, got a brand new battery so that's good, but after having the battery for 4 days and if I let my car sit overnight I can feel it struggle to start up. Still gotta test the starter I guess.

All I can think is that I'm using a 65 amp alt and it's not enough for the car, what do you guys think?

My powerband is supposedly around 6k, but when i get to around 4.5 or 5k in almost any gear (manual trans) the engine noise jumps to a higher, much more audible pitch. If i let off the gas before this, you cant hear the engine at all. If i let off after it gets higher pitched it sounds like its slowly winding down for a few seconds before it drops down to being barely audible like normal. Whats that noise called, and why does that happen?

There's no reason to shift all the way to first,Third is typically enough engine braking for most stops.

All older RWD cars that have manual and over 200Hp are meme cars, you dolt. If its cheap and can be used for drifting/autocross/ track day, then its already known about and carries that tax with it.

My guess would be that they're calibrated at the factory where the throttle bodies are made, but car manufacturers can differ greatly.

As I see it, you can try to dig up a service manual for your car and see if it says anything, plug it in and see if it works, or find a Toyota specific board that would be better suited to answering your question.

A leaky injector would cause this.
There is a misfire, which could mean you have a bad coil, or plug, or wire.
Low Fuel Pressure would cause this.

My second car is an '07 Yaris (~130k miles). Started it up this afternoon and for the first time ever it had to turn over a couple of times before it got going. Once it did the revs (at idle) seemed to drop a lot faster than normal and seemed to hesitate a bit when I gave it gas.

I live in NYC as such I can't really own a car for regular usage.

But I want a car for travel. So I've been thinking about costs.

In the next couple of years I want to knock out a few road trips and some car camping. I've narrowed it down to two options

A) Rent a car, I can get a car around $20 a day (deal hunting and my job offers discounts with companies). I'll round it up to 30 a day with insurance and whatever other shit. So if I want to do a month long road trip, that would knock out to just under a grand.

B) Buy a beater. I used to work on my own car so I'm comfortable buying a fixer upper. I'm not interested in anything but cheap reliability. Ideally it would be something that can run forever. My issue is I'm not sure about the costs. What would be the cheapest way to store the car? Parking in the city is not an option. So I would need to park it out of the city in some storage lot. Any idea how much that would cost?

At the end of the day what would be the cost of owning a car per year if you just got the most reliably little piece of shit you can find and only drive it sporadically? Should I just stick to renting?

faggots, so I have a nice harman kardon setup in my shitbox that I would rather keep, but the problem is that the factory head unit only takes CDs, I tried to give it a shot but it's a fucking pain in the ass. I am clueless on car stereos so I was wondering wondering, can I literally just swap the head unit and keep the rest? or do I have to rewire some shit everytime?
>>
>>17495114
Welcome to the world of car audio enthusiasts. Really, it's mostly just butt connectors and wiring harnesses. The wiring harness is vehicle specific. Any head unit (stereo) you buy will come with a plug that fits into the back of it. All the wires are color coded and 90% of them will match the wiring harness you bought for your car. You butt connect the car specific wiring harness to the head unit plug and you're done. But don't forget all the plastic housing that you usually need. Single din, double din etc. Some filing may be required. But trust me, Plastic housing, vehicle specific wiring harness and a new head unit is all you need. plastic and wiring harness should be like 20$ each and the radio goes all the way up from 50$ to a few hundred depending on features. I would look for something that's iphone/android usb compatible.

Am I supposed to see coolant running through the radiator or full when the car is on/off? The reservoir is at the full mark but I'm curious.

I drove my car up to Minnesota and it overheated only on steep hills. I let it cool and kept driving. At another instance where it overheated, I could feel/hear the coolant boil inside the reservoir and hose.

I topped it off with coolant after it cooled. I added it to the reservoir; should I have added it to the radiator?

Anyway I'm probably gonna try to do a drain and fill.

I also changed the oil and I had 2.5 quarts. Is it realistic to burn 1.5 quarts in around 2-3k miles? My spark plugs werent fouled and the oil looked fine.

Thanks
