This. Manuals are pretty quick too
Possible alternative to the Japanese cars mentioned in this thread is a late 80s/early 90s W201 or W124 Mercedes Benz. If you find a good one you'll be able to drive it for a fucking decade with little to no maintenance.
a beater 1998-2002 v6 firebird/ cammaro if no cooling or ignition problems
otherwise a beater Avalon or late 90's Carola (check for head gasket leaks before buying)
would recommend the Toyota RAV4 but not sure if you can find one for under 2k that is not completely trashed.
what do you drive right now? Could you make it reliable for that 2K?

Will look into it

It's an 04 Impala that I know is dying at 160k miles

Use that as a down payment for something nice. Something your homies will be jealous of. You can get a used bmw and use your 2k as a downpayment. Not only will this build confidence, but it will convince everyone that you actually made it in life. So, what bmw are you looking at OP?

If you're American, I say go last gen shitbox.
Saturn Ion, Pontiac G5, and Chevy Cobalt share parts so domestic repair costs could be low if you wanted to drive it into the ground.
You can usually find the 2.4 litre for around 2-3k. Avoid the CVT autos.
