I bought this tailgate to make a bench with. I'll post results in the next week or so.

Also had a dude offer to buy my Impala yesterday. If the numbers are right I'm thinking about letting it go and getting something a little more fun to drive. Bigger engine, manual.

Hi, that's probably the biggest meme question ever, but what is a good website or contact to import a Mysterious Hachi-Roku ? I honestly want one even if I know it's an old and slow car.
I'm really fearing the whole import aspect but since it's one of the only way to get one i really want to know how I can acquire one.
i'm not in a rush, I just want to know what is the better way of findinf and buying one.
Any import stories would help a lot.

One of the most Badass cars out there in my opinion is a 70 GTO I stay hard whenever I drive one.
A 1970 Swinger is also an awesome car...so is a 69 mustang boss 302...and a 69 nova...and a cutlass...and 70 satellite...and a 70 rambler..and a 68 cuda... I could list cool cars for days

I figured out that the second groove on the pulley is a bit better in line but I don't think I'll be able to fit a second belt at all, maybe I can move the power steering pump but then It'll probably make the alternator too far out... ugh I dunno why my shit's so fucked up lol
http://i.imgur.com/NxXb7nX.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/dHzT2RF.jpg the power steering pump appears to be using a nut as a spacer but I dunno what to do besides just keep the setup I have on it and make sure to keep an extra fan belt in the trunk just in case.
>>
It's not classic related, but it is car related and I'd rather ask you guys than the other tards on this board. I had a weird one at work today. One of our good customers has his G37 towed in because it died. Get it in the shop, engine is locked solid both ways, cannot turn it over by hand. It had oil. He always has the oil changed on time with Nissan Ester synthetic. Car hasn't been ragged on or driven through high water to my knowledge.

The engine is locked up as if the main bearings fucking welded themselves to the crank. We drained the oil and found bearing material in the sample. Not shattered parts found or large chunks. Just a lot of bearing material.

What the fuck would cause that? This one has me stumped, unless there's a factor at play I don't know of.
>>
>>17437246
Sounds like the oil pump stopped chooching for some reason.

Modern manufacturing techniques and QC are pretty damn good but there's always a chance of mechanical failure
>>
>>17437240

Is my BX considered classic round by /o/'s standards?
26 years and counting and for the locals it's pretty classic.

I'm having some issues with metallic clunk sounds mostly when I stop hard accelerating and also when changing from reverse and forward motions.

I'm not sure where the sound comes from but it sounds like its from the wheels and suspension area

I'm thinking something mid-size. I'm a GM guy but that isn't any kind of deal breaker honestly. I like Mopars, too. I should probably just call the guy and see what he's going to offer before I really get ahead of myself.
>>
>>17437456
Yeah that does sound like a likely culprit given the circumstances. Just seems so odd that it would give out, I've never seen an oil pump give out on one of these cars. Customer didn't say he saw the oil light come on, but he could have missed it I suppose.

I swear these aren't the right alternator or power steering mounts for a 79 trans am. Could you post a picture of the alternator mount again? It honestly looks a lot like it's off of something else since the trans am ones look to be a bit closer toward the water pump pulley and shouldn't the adjustment for the alternator be on top and not on the bottom like mine is? http://i.imgur.com/7RMrWO2.jpg

alrighty, thanks! Even though it's the same engine in pictures of olds 403s in trans am's it still shows it having a similar mount to the Pontiac 400. With alternator sitting high, more centered and having the adjustment nut on top. The power steering pump seems to be close on that second groove so maybe If I do have the wrong mount I can get the proper one and it'll work.... hopefully, I just want to drive my car lol

I'm not 100% sure honestly. The two gear sets they put in my model year are either 3.55s or 4.10s, I'm assuming I've got the 4.10s but that's mainly just me guessing

Kek. I'm sure that will be my bronco someday. It'll be the rear driveshaft that gets me. I completely went through the electrical system. I had to replace the front driveshaft because the slip joint had to much play and was one short trip away from grenading. The rear driveshaft has some minor play, and I'm still sore from having to shell out $450 for the front one. That's the one thing that will bite me, and I'm prepared to face that. That or my engine will lock up when my already worn main bearings decide to give it up.

What's some standard maintenance to do when you get a new-old car?

Aside from replacing fluids. I'm thinking of rebuilding the carter bbs, and I've been alternately told to use seafoam in the tank, soak the carb in starter fluid overnight, or spray seafoam in the carb while the engine is warm and running... I'm just wary of additives so wondering what you guys typically do. The new truck is pretty hard starting right now. Going to replace the fuel filter first.

So it looks like my PS pump shaft has maybe a 1/4" of play in and out when you turn left or right. It was fucked before because I had a really bad leak (didn't tighten the fitting) so I figured it was that, today I went to turn out the driveway and I still couldn't fucking turn.

I'm just going to buy a new pump but man I'm pissed, I thrashed to get this shit buttoned up today for a car show and I got fucked
>>
>>17441973
What state are you in? Texas doesn't inspect frame work (for whatever fucking reason).

>>17442065
All the filters and fluids. You'd be surprised at how cheap new fuel tanks are, look at LMC truck. All your brakes: master cylinder, calipers, and wheel cylinder; just fucking replace them, your life will thank you when the pedal doesnt go to the fucking floor. Make sure all of your suspension joints and bushings are tight and greased; replace any that are significantly loose. Check driveshaft u-joints, replace if loose. It's expensive, but replace any dry rotted or otherwise unworthy tires; blowouts are fucking scary, trust me. If the radiator even looks like it might leak, replace it, the water pump, and the heater core at the same time; depending on your engine design, the timing cover might have to come off and be resealed. Belts, replace if dry or cracked. Check your alternator output, should be 13-14 volts; replace if not. Go through the wiring system. Clean up or replace any rusty terminal ends. Patch any stripped or broken wires. Check all your electrical grounds: battery, engine block, frame, body. Check horn grounds (usually grounded through the horn body. If corroded or loose, that can cause nasty high resistance and fry some shit when you use it, but that goes for all grounds. Grounds are VERY important, and the cause of most electrical failures in old cars are corroded or loose grounds.) Silicone grease is very good to use on electrical connectors and grounds. Old cars had the wiring harnesses run and hung pretty shitty. Zip tie, wrap, and protect the harnesses from rubbing through on anything or moving around excessively. Check all your lights, repair as needed. Check for water leaks, repair as needed.

That should keep you busy for now.

Requires slightly excessive finicking with the choke to get started, I know slants take a long while to warm up but it sometimes dies if I don't give it enough gas when getting in gear. After about 5 mins the problem goes away. I'm just assuming the carb is gummed up a bit because it sat baking in the heat on the side of the road for god knows how long. The difference in the paint inside and outside is astounding

they're just giant vinyl wrap pieces basically. you can get new stuff but in my case I'm not planning to do much to it cosmetically.

guy gave me it for free, I'm in the hole a couple hundred bucks in transport costs hauling it home. needs a little bit of everything, but frame is solid so I think it's worth saving.

I'm figuring $1200 (Canadian) from now until road-ready. could be less if it doesn't need an engine. electrical issues, can't run currently. guy told me it had a knock, but as soon as I saw the distributor (cranked around all the way sideways, has to be like 30 degrees off correct base timing) I figured there was a chance it was spark knock.

Fug, posted in the wrong thread...

Towed my great grandfathers 1952 Ford F1 pickup out of the rotting farmhouse garage a few weeks back and gave it a proper new home in the shop. It was last plated in 1974 and I assume it has been sitting there ever since.

I want to try and get the engine un-stuck and I'm heading up there this weekend to crack the spark plugs off and dump some penetrating oil into the cylinders.

Are there better ways to approach this? Anything else I should take a look at while I'm at it? I DD an old 80's Jap shitbox so I'm no stranger to repairs, but I've never wrenched on anything this old.

It could just be bad gas, honestly. You'd be surprised how long of sitting it takes to actually ruin a carb. But it could probably use an adjustment. Could be a combination of both of those.

If your vacuum isn't routed correctly, that could also be causing a hard start. Make sure there's no vacuum leaks and your crankcase is breathing properly.

>>17442278
Do you have an electric pump? In either case, don't fucking worry. Just make sure the ignition is off and do your thing like you described.

>>17442323
That's a flathead engine, right? If so, no need to worry about valve guide seals drying up. Transmission fluid down the cylinders is probably a better option for unsticking the engine. Will help clean it out really well and help the rings re-seat. If it's a V8, fill the cylinder up with fluid, being that its at a 45 degree angle, the fluid goes to one side. Let it sit for a few days, a week would be ideal. Then see if it'll turn over by hand. If it does, use a turket baster to suck most of the fluid out of the cylinders. Then crank it over for about ten seconds with the plugs out to push as much fluid out of the cylinders before starting. It'll be a smokey mess. Don't forget, don't let the spark plugs get oily, it'll never light off. Get those cylinders as dry as possible.

>Stripping paint edition
I discovered this by accident and it really worked out as soon as I'd tried enough different carb cleaners and brake parts cleaners and the like and the timing and temperatures and tools to help me along.

If ever you're working on a classic car and are interested in revealing the previous coats of paint, b12 chemtool spray works wonders at taking paint off a layer at a time.
Use it to wet down a section you want to work with and watch it until it starts to dry and wet it down again. Depending on what it was painted with it'll either peel up in front of your eyes within a few applications or start to run off the car (work your way from top to bottom).
Nooks and crannies can be gotten with a toothbrush or rag, trim pieces taken off and done separately. Paint removal on smooth surfaces can be helped along with a plastic putty scraper. A cheaper can of house brand carb cleaner can be used to cut the b12 for the runny-style paint, just hold one in each hand.

Had fun doing the jeep, it helps when I can see the progress. Pic is when I picked it up, it'd been sitting for some time.

>LS swap bro
In all seriousness they are a good motor. If you don't mind swapping it into another vehicle. If it's something dodge I'd say get a 318 or a 440 if ya can. Ford older stuff... 351 Windsor is a good one. Or the modular 4.6 or even the fox era 5.0s but you will have to brace the block around 500hp.
Older Chevy stuff, 350, 327, 396 and 454 are plentiful. Stay away from 305.
>>
>>17444762
>>17444804
If you meant car instead of crate, a good start would be a late 90s Fbody, a SN95, or from Mopar you could get a RT Dakota. Unfortunately I don't know much about import motors besides a Supra but those are stupid expensive. Hope this helps anon.
>pls no be mad if I am wrong
>>
>>17444804
How much power though? 350s start at like 240jp and go way up. 350hp? 400hp? Daily driver that I want to take to the strip for fun.

>>17444809
Crate. Time for a swap.
>>
>>17444813
I think daily drivers are good around 450-500. anything more than that and there's a lot of other things to be concerned with. Yes, crate 350s start relatively low. Gen 2 makes 300. But small block motors have the most, in my experience, readily available and cheap parts. You can also make a 383 stroker with a 350 and some 400 parts. Is this going to be carbureted or EFI?
>>
>>17444813
350:
>cheap
>reliable
>simple
>room to expand displacement
>tons of upgrades
But there are options like the 572, 454, 427. Also LS can be swapped to carbureted and they work well!
>>
>>17444859
Carb. I don't mind losing some horses by keeping things oldschool. I got my eyes on a 355 that makes 342hp. I'm just afraid I won't be satisfied.
>>
>>17444880
Well you can still make big power with a carb. Don't let us LS boys fool ya! And 342 isn't anything to sneeze at, I'm sure you could bump that up quite a bit too. Check out Holley carbs, bet they'd have some goodies to help her breathe. The more air you can cram in and suck it out just as fast, the more power you'll gain. What transmission did you have in mind?
>>
>>17444893
Yeah and I figure this 355 has room for improvement. For one it has a spreadbore intake and carb, which I'm interested in for fuel economy but can be upgraded later for performance if I want. As far as trans right now I have a 200-4r and was hoping it would handle the power. If not I guess I'd go with a TH350 because it seems like it is pretty common to pair a 350 with a TH350. As far as a rear gear I literally have no idea about that stuff and what combinations are good.
>>
>>17444923
Find out what it has for a cam and if there's any head work been done, if you can. Turbo 350 is good. TH400 is almost bullet proof from factory. It is a 3 speed like the 350. I assume that the 200-r4 is a 4 speed from my readings. It's not much different than a 700r4. Rear end gearing is important too. If you want fuel economy, go with a higher gear like 3.08 or 3.42. They will have a higher top speed, but accelerate lower. For 342hp 4.10 would be too much I suspect. You could use 3.73 posi and I bet that would be a good start. Plus it's very common.

3 with OD, yeah you're right. Seems pretty good, but also expensive for just 342.. seems a little off to me. For 2500 you could build a motor built for your needs. Also Jasper is not a reputable company. Just my 2 cents.

Thoughts /ccg/? I dont really know whats making that clunking noise, but its slightly concerning... It doesn't do it when cold, only after it gets up to temp.

Is it fucked?

my gf aunt who got her dads cool car and doesn't really know what she has. It either needs a new carburetor or it needs to be cleaned and tuned because she needs to apply gas for it to stay on and someone stole the key to it so now she uses a screw driver to turn it on and the brakes are going out. My autism makes me reeeeeeee every time I see it because it gets hack jobs to get it fixed when something happens to it and if I had it it wouldn't look like that

If you have the 403 it is Litre. switching stickers was a popular "mod" in the early 80's dues to T/A 6.6 meaning you have the high performance option engine. It was like how people today slap 'M' "typeR' and "ss" badges on stock cars.

I have to commend you for keeping the stock nose,my friends switched theirs with the batmobile ones.
>>
>>17449061
I highly doubt he'd sell it but sometime I might see if the motor isn't seized and maybe he'd at least let my grandfather and me try to get the motor started. It's just a straight 6 so if we had to tear it apart it shouldn't be too hard to work on. Even if he did sell it I dunno what I'd do with it since it's really too old to drive anywhere besides a car show or something. But from what i've seen it's actually pretty rust free and the the various barn cats seem to have kept the mice out since the seats are still for the most part intact and there isn't much visible mouse shit.

Write a letter to the judge/courthouse asking that it be dismissed. Include notable things about your character, like if you're part of any service groups or whatever and that you understand the mistake you made. Show up to the court date rather than pay the fine in advance. You should try to get the points reduced if you can

Mine is the opposite of high performance atm lol, I honestly think this 403 wasn't the original engine in this one because it had rad hoses about half an inch to big rad on the i-d and 6 inches long but idk

The Dakota with the 4.7 is actually pretty damn decent. Fairly easy to work on; there was a minimal amount of cussing coming from me when i rebuilt the cooling system and changed the power steering pump.
It suffers from the same front-end bullshit though. Which, again, was fairly easy to do.

They make 8 total patch pans for it not including a full trunk pan they make. I only needed 6 of the 8. Only REALLY need 4 of the 8, but the floor where driver and passenger put their feet is only kinda rusty, so I figured I'd go ahead and replace the 2 pans there too.
GM thought it was a good idea at the time to glue spongy foam/cloth insulation on the floor to aid in soaking up water and causing it to rust faster to make people buy new cars quicker I guess.

Update on my 79 trans am with the fucked up pulleys. I thought I had found some metal bits on the dipstick in the past but figured it was the chrome flaking off of it (partially true since it was) I had everything ready to run for a car show tomorrow and since that intake gasket went out I wanted to change the oil just in case antifreeze got into it. Well, unfortunatly it looks like a stripper was around my oil pan since it's got a shit load of "glitter" in it. Weird part is that there's no lifter tick, rod knocks, great oil pressure, and it doesn't smoke so I'm kinda stumped. Maybe just maybe that day I overheated the fuck out of it the damage was from that one incident and all is well. But knowing my luck it's not but I have the disposable income now to price out a rebuild or a 400 swap. But for now it's got some 10w40 and hope that it'll last until I figure out what to do.

>>17458952
Depends on the motor build, wouldn't really do much for a stock or mild motor except look pretty when the valve covers are off.
>>
>>17458223
Stupid question but is rod bearing material magnetic? All that shiny stuff was magnetic. My dad swears up and down that rod bearing material shouldn't be magnetic and it's probably a cam bearing, lifter, or cam lobe.
>>
>>17459129
Depends how much of the bearing is eaten away. Rod and crank bearings are both made of steel coated with a layer of bronze then a tin alloy. If it's the coating material it won't be magnetic, if it's worn into the steel backing plate of the bearing then the bits WILL be magnetic.

So my answer is a strong maybe. At the end of the day it doesn't do any good trying to brainstorm about where the metal is coming from without getting into the motor. Do yourself a favor and pull it apart, find your problem and douche the block out good while you're at it. Magnetic glitter could be quite literally anything inside the motor.
>>
>>17458935
Yeah, only when cranking, not when cold, that video was taken after it had been driven for ~10 minutes

If i shut it off and immediately restart it, it doesn't do it. Car runs and drives wonderfully otherwise.

>>17459041
I played with the timing the other day and its as low as it can be, a slight turn retarded and it labored.

it could be wet, but i dont know, it doesn't do it when cold.

I bought a new ignition coil, spark plug wires, and O2 sensor for my Bronco. As far as I can tell, the ignition coil and O2 sensor are the originals that came on the truck 28 years ago. Can I expect a small bump in fuel economy?

>>
>>17459328
It honestly sounds to me like it's just having trouble cranking (since we just ruled out timing). Check your solenoid and starter connections, they could be corroded badly. My bronco did something similar when I first bought it. When the engine was hot, it would crank really fucking slow and act almost like the timing was 30 degrees advanced. Turns out the starter solenoid connections were solid rust. New connections and it was fixed.

Napa sells new ones (for forklifts!) for $12
>>

Well it has a new starter on it.. Maybe the wire is just shot...

But if i hold the pedal at a half press, it starts up almost immediatly

Be careful with the build quality of those china spinners. If you have a lathe you can get a real pool ball out of the garbage, drill a hole and seat a bearing in it from the top. Then install it on the old base

Just got this Ford Escort wagon. It's a diesel, which I know nothing about, and it's a stick, which I can't drive. Why did I do this? How fucked am I?
>>
>>17460548
Learning to drive manual competently is easy, there are a million guides out there.
>>
>>17460315
Bruh, you should have a remote mounted starter solenoid on something that old. Google where it's at, probably somewhere near the battery. Thats likely where the connections are fucked, if that's what it is. And just because the starter is new, like you said, the connection at it can still be bad as well.

What pedal are you talking about? Throttle?

Hello, I looked around at the yard, but I couldn't really find one....(whole place was a mud trap and couldn't go to deep), I'll keep you posted, but nothing so far........... Sorry :(

Yeah, throttle.

Starter solenoid is brand new. I had a spare sitting around, and tried replacing it to fix the issues i was having... No dice

>>
>>17460700
I just watched the video again, im almost certain you just have a cranking issue. It probably lights of immediately when you press the gas because that's how old cars are. My bronco only needs one turn to light off when the engine is warm.

Check all of your connections, listen to me...the CONNECTIONS. Not the parts themselves, you a new starter and solenoid. If they are rusty, loose, corroded, or burned wires, this could be your issue.

Check all of your grounds for this as well.

>Clutch in
>Find first gear
>Ever so slowly let clutch out and feel where it starts to grab.
>Practice
>Practice clutch and switching gears without moving

You can do it bro. I learned on a huge ass fire engine with a split 8 speed, thats 4 up, flip the switch, up 4 more. Plus double-clutching. Learning to drive the 3 speed International was a piece of cake by comparison.

I'm not quite stock, I put a double master cylinder from a 67 in for a little added safety, and the paint isn't factory color. But I try to keep it at least in the spirit of stock. Has the new radio that looks stock but is digital.

Hydraulic lifters?

You have a lifter that's collapsing. Sounds EXACTLY like that, when it's warm the check valve in one of your lifters is letting oil escape and making one of the pushrods knock into the rocker arm.

Pull your valve covers off and find the one that gets loose after shutting the motor down.
>>
>>17458223
ah fuck, looks like another trip to the parts store since I broke my radiator cap. Hopefully going to get this radiator burped of air tonight so I can see the damage and hear any weird noises. I have to drive it up to my grandfather's shop anyway to pull the motor so wish me luck.
>>17458778 I feel ya in regard to the redneck butchery. The seats in my trans am (along with the radiator support plate) were held down with self tapped screws. Also when I bought the car the previous owner didn't even have the dipstick for it.

the Lincoln in my case is actually a Town Car. turn signal got crunched by an idiot pulling out in front of me so I went all out and swapped the header panel from a Mark VI destined for the derby.

Nice.
I don't really have any dings or dents in mine. But the bottoms of the front doors aren't fairing to well with rust.

I wish cars like these were in the junkyards by me, but sadly there has only been one and some guy bought it for a crash-to-pass car. I only managed to get a couple things off it

box Panthers, including the Lincolns of both models, pop up regularly in my local yards (Detroit, MI - I'm in Windsor, ON) so I've been pretty fortunate about that.

I also have a stockpile of parts for my 5 (five!) Panthers in the garage...irrational to the max.
>>
>>17463518
Nothing old sticks around the yards here, it's sucks.
One yard in my town literally has nothing older than 2000.

I really wish I had a parts car to pick from, cause since I found out my AC had been retrofitted to r134a, I've been trying to get a blend door actuator for the Hot and Cold setting

>>17463532
are you sure the actuator is what's toast? pic related, it's the part you just mentioned

the other part I pictured is the much more common failure item. it (mechanically) senses interior air temp and operates a vacuum valve to pass vacuum to the servo (part you mentioned) to operate the door

zero vacuum = full hot
full vacuum = full cold
>>
>>17463540
Would an 81 even have something like that?

As for the Blend door actuator, when I switch the temp from hot to cold, the actuator barely moves and I can't even push it in or out by hand.
For now I just have the actuator unscrewed from its mount and just reach through the glove box pull it back when I want AC
>>
>>17463540
That actuator is a little more fancy than what mine looks like too. Mine doesn't have a plug on it, just 1 vacuum line on the back of it
>>
>>17463588
yeah, the valve design changed around 81 but functionally it works the same. look at my pic above of the 5 weird blue things, the black thing above them is probably what you have. it lives under the dash pad above the glove box, accessed by removing dash pad and trim on front of dash (good luck, dash pad is fragile)

as long as your climate control has numbers for temperature, you have this. I'm 98% sure all Lincolns had it.

usually the failure is they leak vacuum too much and prevent full heat in winter. you have the opposite problem. i would use a hand vacuum pump and test if the servo/actuator holds vacuum. if it does, the valve/sensor thing is the problem. if it does not, then the servo/actuator is the problem.

the aftermarket never made either of these parts, and new old stock is unobtainium. junkyards are the only option.

highly recommend grandmarq.net
lincoln websites and facebook groups seem to be a bit bogged down by "old folks" and annoying purists who make it hard to find the right answer sometimes. GMN is a happy balance and plenty of people know the Lincoln stuff.
>>
>>17463640
Yes I know exactly where that little sensor is, I've done my heater core in my car, already had the dash pad off.
I'll have to test the actuator on Monday when I'm at work with out little mighty vac
