I turned the truck in. After a real shitty week it turned out to be a completely painless process. No paperwork, no interrogation, just some jokes that the grass isn't greener.

Here's a request from a non-trucker to all you owner-operators out there:

Loose the fucking LED Christmas lights. It just makes the legal signal lights harder to pick out. I know that there is some legally required lighting on trucks*, but beyond this, just stop.

And if you must install it, don't have some clown do a potato wiring job and rig _all_ the lights to flash with turn signals.

*Even the required lighting is too much IMO. I like to see the corners of a truck. But the stuff on top of the cab is useless. I don't care how tall a rig is. I'm not flying over it.

Dat sanity is gone. I really don't want to go back to work tomorrow morning. Most days I don't totally hate it, but I feel like my time there is up. Updated my resumé and all the websites but I'm not sure what I want to do next.

Options:

So for the career path, I see two options:

1- Get a job that I don't completely hate, something where I can work 40-50 hours a week, pay the bills, and turn off my phone when I get home so I have the freedom to do whatever I want on weekends

2- Find a job that interests me more where I really want to help grow something. It will be more rewarding in the end, but I will probably need to keep the phone next to me 24/7 and work will always be a priority even when I'm off the clock

#1 is comfy tbqhwy, but coffee grill is more of a #2 person. I think that if I stick with #1 and keep driving trucks, I need to get some good projects going outside of work to keep me motivated.

Also I told her this story when we were discussing all of this, and it left us both very confused

Honestly since I was a little kid, I always wanted to be a pilot. But it's hard to get into a good job unless you have tons of flight hours. And only way to do that is either join the military (not for me) or have tons of $$$ so you can buy your own plane to practice or pay for tons of lessons and time in the air.

I take my cdl test this week. When i pass i owe a year to a large company, and have to do otr reefer for a few months but then i can do pretty much anything from flatbed to tanker, and they will teach me.

What am i getting myself into? I have no family and think the sleeper will be a nice little home. People keep trying to tell me robots will be driving in 5 years but i just dont see it, especially for hazmatb oilfields, and logging.

Should i run? Should i be excited?

is it true that on actual trucks since theyre diesel that even with a load on you can start off and just let off the clutch to go with no throttle? what about on hills

Yes pretty much. 1st gear gets you to about 1mph. It's not just the torque from diesels, but the fact that the low gears are super low.

On a 10spd, with a light load you start off in 3rd or even 4th if you want, and that only gets you to 5mph. You can do the same shit in lots of older pickup trucks with manual transmissions because they will often have a real low 1st and some torque.

i change air brake shoes and have taken out transnissions with clutch brakes but have never drove one

Idk, you can go back down the gears if you want, you can go from 8 to 3 if you just drop it into N until you slow down to the right speed.

Not 100% diesel mechanic on this, but the clutch brake doesn't do shit aside from when you are totally stopped and trying to get into gear. It has nothing to do with shifting (up or down).

With no synchros, when the truck is stopped and in N, the engine is still spinning the input shaft and gears, while the output shaft and gears are stopped since the wheels aren't moving so the gears would never want to mesh. So you have the clutch brake, whem you push the clutch all the way down, it slows down the input shaft so it will mesh and you can actually get the truck into 1st, 2nd, or 3rd to take off from a stop.

When driving the truck, you can feel/hear the clutch brake working. It takes a second once you push the clutch down for the brake to stop the input shaft so if you try and get it into gear too soon, it will grind.

There are certain ones that aren't too bad. Dude who worked for us, he used to have a dank gig through Home Depot. Drove a flatbed around all day delivering to jobsites and pulled it off with the forklift. He said they always tipped him too and he never had to pay for lunch.

Since I live nearby I just went home to shitpost from bed. They are mounted at the top. And it's not like a car backing cam, they look down at a sharp angle. The field of view is only like 10' or 15' behind the truck. So you have to use your mirrors still but it will help if there's some dumb nigger kid standing right behind the trailer or you want to know how much room you have before you hit that parked car without GOAL.

One other thing I actually kinda like about it that's unexpected- if you're bouncing off the governor on the highway and want to change lanes but some shitbag wants to ride next you you, you can see when you are like 3' in front of them and change lanes super close.
